Chapter 263 - Vol.06 Ch.37 – DARKNESS APPEARS (1)

Akainu lunged.

Magma surged from his fist as he drove straight toward Arthur. The force of his charge sent fragments of shattered stone skidding across the ground, while the heat rolling from his body made the air distort around him.

Arthur lowered his stance.

Behind him, Ace, Sabo, and Luffy remained frozen for a fraction of a second, still trying to comprehend the sudden confrontation.

Then—

A massive presence appeared behind Akainu.

"Enough."

The voice was low.

But it carried through the battlefield with unmistakable authority.

Akainu's eyes widened.

Arthur's gaze shifted past him.

Whitebeard stood several meters behind the Admiral, his bisento resting against his shoulder. Blood covered his battered body, and his breathing had grown heavier after fighting with Aokiji and Kizaru.

Yet the look in his eyes had changed.

It was no longer the calm determination he had shown when ordering his sons to escape.

It was fury.

Akainu slowly turned his head. "Whitebeard..."

The old pirate's expression hardened. "You've done enough."

Arthur immediately understood what was coming.

He stepped aside.

The magma fist that had been aimed at him tore through the space where he had been standing a moment earlier, but Akainu never reached his intended target.

Whitebeard was already there.

His massive hand clenched around the shaft of his bisento.

"Gurararara..." A dangerous smile appeared on his face. "You've got a lot to say for someone who keeps getting knocked down."

"You're the one who should be worried, old man." Akainu's expression darkened.

Whitebeard didn't answer.

He simply pulled his fist back.

The air around his knuckles began to distort.

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"Everyone, move." He recognized the movement immediately.

"Come on!" Sabo reacted first.

He grabbed Luffy and pulled him farther away while Ace followed, though his eyes remained fixed on Whitebeard.

The next instant—

BOOM!

Whitebeard's fist struck the air.

The Tremor-Tremor Fruit erupted with devastating force.

The ground beneath Akainu fractured instantly, while the surrounding plaza buckled under the pressure. A violent shockwave tore through the battlefield, throwing debris and shattered stone into the air.

Akainu crossed his arms to defend himself.

It wasn't enough.

His body was blasted backward, his boots carving deep trenches through the stone before he finally managed to stop himself.

Whitebeard didn't give him time to recover.

He charged.

His bisento swung downward with enough force to split the ground beneath them.

Akainu narrowly avoided the blade and countered with a magma-covered fist.

Whitebeard caught the attack with his forearm.

Magma splashed across his skin.

He didn't flinch.

Instead, he drove his forehead into Akainu's face.

CRACK!

Akainu staggered.

Whitebeard followed with another punch.

The impact sent the Admiral crashing through a section of the ruined plaza.

The surrounding Marines froze.

Even the pirates who had been retreating glanced back.

"Pops..." Marco murmured.

He had seen Whitebeard fight countless times.

But this was different.

There was no hesitation in his movements.

No concern for his own wounds.

Every strike carried the anger of a father who had just watched an enemy attempt to stop his sons from escaping.

Akainu rose from the rubble, blood running from his mouth.

"You're still protecting that brat?"

Whitebeard's eyes burned.

"Ace is my son." He slammed his bisento against the ground. "And I'll tear apart anyone who tries to take him from me."

The air trembled.

Another quake erupted.

Akainu was forced to leap aside as the ground split beneath him.

Arthur watched silently from a short distance away.

He had already intervened once, but this was no longer his fight. Whitebeard had made his choice, and Arthur had promised to respect it.

So he stepped back, leaving the old Emperor to face Akainu himself.

Behind Arthur, Ace clenched his fists.

"Pops!"

"Keep moving!" Whitebeard didn't look at him.

Ace hesitated.

Arthur turned slightly toward him. "He knows what he's doing."

Ace's eyes remained fixed on Whitebeard.

For a moment, he looked as though he wanted to turn back.

Then Sabo placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Ace."

Ace finally looked at him.

Sabo nodded toward the escape route.

"We have to trust him."

Ace swallowed hard.

His gaze lingered on Whitebeard for another second before he turned away.

"...Yeah."

The three brothers resumed their retreat.

Arthur remained between them and the battlefield, watching the destruction unfold behind him.

Whitebeard continued his assault.

Akainu launched another magma strike.

Whitebeard smashed it aside with his bisento before driving his fist forward once more. The resulting tremor shattered the ground beneath Akainu and sent another violent wave through Marineford.

The entire fortress seemed to groan.

Cracks raced across the plaza.

Broken towers shook.

Even the frozen battlefield created by Aokiji trembled beneath the force.

Aokiji and Kizaru both turned toward the clash.

"Ooh scary... He's getting serious." Kizaru raised an eyebrow.

"He's not planning to leave." Aokiji's expression became grim.

Whitebeard stood amid the collapsing stone, his chest rising and falling heavily.

He looked toward the path where his sons were disappearing.

They were still moving.

That was enough.

He turned back toward the Admirals.

His grip tightened around his bisento.

"Come."

Akainu wiped the blood from his mouth.

Aokiji advanced from one side.

Kizaru descended from above.

Three Admirals now surrounded the wounded Emperor once more.

Whitebeard simply raised his weapon.

Marineford shook again.

The three Admirals closed in.

Whitebeard stood at the center of the ruined plaza, surrounded by fractured stone and drifting smoke. His breathing was heavier now, and blood continued to seep from wounds across his chest and shoulders. Yet his stance remained firm.

Aokiji moved first.

A wave of ice spread across the ground, racing toward Whitebeard's feet.

Whitebeard swung his bisento.

The frozen surface shattered beneath the force of the blow, sending chunks of ice flying in every direction. Before the debris could settle, a barrage of golden beams descended from above.

Kizaru.

Whitebeard twisted his body and raised his weapon. Several beams struck the bisento and scattered, while others tore through the ground around him.

Then Akainu attacked from the front.

"Magma Geyser!"

A column of molten rock erupted beneath Whitebeard.

Whitebeard leaped aside, but the attack caught his shoulder. Magma splashed across his coat, burning through the fabric and scorching his skin.

Whitebeard gritted his teeth.

He answered with a devastating swing.

The air cracked.

A tremor ripped through the plaza and forced Akainu backward. The shockwave continued past him, threatening to tear through the retreating pirates farther behind.

Arthur noticed immediately.

His eyes narrowed.

"Can't let it pass." He raised one hand.

The force spreading across the battlefield abruptly weakened before reaching the escape route. Cracks still formed across the ground, but the destructive wave lost enough power to prevent the fleeing pirates from being caught in it.

"What was that?" Sabo glanced back.

Arthur didn't answer.

His attention remained on Whitebeard.

He wasn't helping the old Emperor.

He was simply making sure the battlefield did not collapse beneath the people Whitebeard was trying to protect.

Another collision erupted ahead.

Aokiji created a massive ice wall and sent it crashing toward Whitebeard. The Emperor shattered it with his bisento, only for Kizaru to appear above him.

"Yasakani no Magatama."

A storm of light rained down.

Whitebeard crossed his arms and endured the barrage.

Explosions erupted around him.

Stone was blown apart.

Smoke swallowed his figure.

For a moment, nothing could be seen.

Whitebeard emerged from the smoke, but the damage was becoming impossible to hide.

His left shoulder hung slightly lower than before. Blood dripped from his fingertips, and his breathing had become rougher. Each breath seemed to scrape against his battered lungs.

Marco saw it from above.

"Pops!" Marco clenched his teeth.

He wanted to descend.

He wanted to fight beside his father.

But Whitebeard's order still echoed in his mind.

Make sure the others make it out alive.

Marco looked toward the retreating pirates instead.

Dozens of his brothers were still struggling to reach the ships. Some were wounded. Others were carrying fallen comrades while Marines attempted to close the remaining gaps.

Marco's expression hardened.

"Everyone! Keep moving!" His voice carried across the battlefield. "Get to the ships!"

The Whitebeard Pirates responded immediately.

Arthur watched the retreating pirates advance toward the escape route and silently adjusted his position. Whenever a Marine formation threatened to overrun the retreating pirates, he intervened just enough to break their momentum before withdrawing again.

He kept his distance from Whitebeard. That distinction mattered.

Whitebeard had chosen to make his final stand.

Arthur would not take that choice away from him.

A tremendous impact suddenly shook Marineford.

Whitebeard was sent crashing through several layers of broken stone.

"Pops!" Marco's voice rang out.

Before he could descend, Whitebeard's hand emerged from the rubble.

He pushed himself upright.

For a moment, his knees nearly buckled.

He steadied himself with the bisento.

Akainu stared at him. "You're finished."

"Not yet." Whitebeard slowly lifted his head.

He stepped forward.

Akainu's magma-covered fist met his bisento.

The collision produced another violent shockwave.

Aokiji immediately followed, freezing Whitebeard's weapon to the ground. Kizaru attacked from the blind spot.

Whitebeard tore his weapon free and turned just in time.

The golden beam struck his side.

Blood sprayed across the shattered ground.

Whitebeard staggered.

But he remained upright.

He swung his fist.

The air distorted.

A massive tremor erupted between the four men, forcing the Admirals apart.

Marineford shook violently.

The fortress walls groaned under the repeated assaults. Cracks spread through the plaza, while pieces of stone fell from damaged structures overhead.

Arthur looked toward the collapsing sections.

He immediately moved.

A wave of force caught several falling slabs before they could crush the pirates below, redirecting them toward an empty section of the battlefield.

"Keep going!" Arthur shouted.

Sabo heard him. "Everyone, move!"

Ace looked back again.

Whitebeard was still fighting.

Still surrounded.

Still refusing to fall.

Ace's expression twisted with pain.

"Pops..."

Luffy grabbed his arm.

"Come on, Ace."

Ace looked at him.

Luffy's eyes were wet, but his grip remained firm.

"We can't stop."

Ace closed his eyes for a brief moment.

Then he nodded.

"Yeah."

They continued.

Behind them, Whitebeard's battle grew more brutal.

Aokiji froze one side of his body.

Whitebeard shattered the ice.

Kizaru's light pierced through his defenses.

Akainu's magma burned across his chest.

Still, the old Emperor refused to yield.

His attacks became heavier rather than weaker, each tremor carrying enough force to make the battlefield convulse.

But his body was reaching its limit.

Blood ran down his face.

His breathing became increasingly labored.

One of his knees touched the ground.

Whitebeard slowly rose again.

He looked toward the retreating ships.

More of his sons were reaching them.

Ace was still moving.

Luffy and Sabo were beside him.

That was all that mattered.

"Good..." Whitebeard smiled faintly.

He turned back toward the Admirals.

His expression hardened once more.

Aokiji watched him carefully.

"How long can he keep going?"

"Ooh... scary. Quite the stubborn old man." Kizaru sighed.

"Then we'll put him down." Akainu's eyes narrowed.

The three Admirals advanced together.

Whitebeard tightened his grip around the bisento.

His battered body could no longer hide the cost of the battle.

But his will remained untouched.

He planted his feet.

The ground beneath him cracked.

Another clash erupted.

This time, the impact was so powerful that the entire Marineford plaza seemed to tilt beneath them.

Arthur watched from the edge of the battlefield.

He could feel it.

Whitebeard was approaching the end.

Not because his spirit had weakened.

Because his body simply could not endure much more.

And yet the old pirate continued to fight as though time itself were the only enemy he needed to defeat.

Every second he remained standing bought his sons another second to escape.

Every blow he exchanged with the Admirals pushed the Marines farther away from the retreating pirates.

Whitebeard was no longer fighting for victory.

He was buying time.

And Marineford was slowly becoming the price.

Far across the battlefield, the last groups of Whitebeard Pirates began reaching their ships.

Marco looked back one final time.

His father was still there.

Still fighting.

Still standing.

Marco narrowed his eyes. Something was moving through the smoke behind the ruins.

Then he heard it.

Laughter—loud, careless, almost obscene amid the ruins of Marineford.

Several Marines turned toward the source.

Through the smoke rising from the shattered plaza, a group of figures slowly emerged.

At their center walked a man wearing a wide grin, his coat hanging loosely from his shoulders.

Marshall D. Teach.

Behind him came the members of the Blackbeard Pirates, each one carrying the unmistakable presence of criminals who had been released from the deepest depths of Impel Down.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then one of the Marines recognized him.

"Blackbeard..."

The name spread through the Marineford like a spark.

"It's Marshall D. Teach!"

"He's here?!"

"Wasn't he one of the Seven Warlords?"

"He betrayed the Whitebeard Pirates!"

"Those are the prisoners from Impel Down!"

The Marines surrounding the area immediately became uneasy. Weapons were raised, but few seemed willing to approach.

Teach laughed again.

"Zehahaha!"

He spread his arms as though welcoming the entire battlefield.

"What a wonderful sight!"

His arrival sent a different kind of tension through Marineford.

This was no longer simply a war between the Marines and the Whitebeard Pirates.

Something else had entered the war zone.

Something unpredictable.

Across the ruins, several Whitebeard commanders stared at him in disbelief.

"Teach..." Marco's eyes narrowed.

His expression hardened the moment he recognized the man.

Ace had once trusted that man.

Whitebeard had once called him one of his sons.

And yet Teach had murdered Thatch, betrayed the crew, and triggered everything that had brought them to Marineford.

Vista's hand tightened around his sword.

"So he actually came."

"That bastard." Jozu's jaw clenched.

Even the exhausted pirates who had barely been able to stand moments earlier found themselves watching Teach with renewed hostility.

Teach didn't seem bothered.

If anything, their hatred only made him smile wider.

His eyes slowly traveled across the plaza.

The Admirals.

The remaining Whitebeard commanders.

The Warlords.

The wounded Marines.

And finally—

Whitebeard.

Teach's smile widened.

"There you are, Pops."

Whitebeard's expression changed.

The old man's eyes settled on his former son.

For a moment, the battlefield seemed to grow quieter.

"Teach."

His voice was low.

But everyone nearby heard it.

"It's been a long time." Teach chuckled.

Marco stepped forward. "You've got some nerve showing your face here."

Marco's eyes sharpened.

The air around him seemed to tremble with killing intent.

But Whitebeard raised one hand.

"Marco."

The commander stopped.

Whitebeard's gaze never left Teach.

Something about the man's presence was wrong.

Teach wasn't looking at the shattered ground like a pirate who had arrived to join a war.

He was looking at it like a man who had arrived after everyone else had already done the work.

The bodies.

The destruction.

The weakened forces.

The wounded legends.

Teach was taking everything in.

Calculating.

Waiting.

Whitebeard understood.

"You planned this."

"Of course I did." Teach's grin widened.

A murmur spread among the Marines.

"Blackbeard..." Sengoku's voice was cold. "So you finally decided to show yourself."

Teach's eyes gleamed.

"Zehahahaha! That's right, Sengoku!"

His crew spread out behind him, each of them carrying the unmistakable presence of men who had come to Marineford for something far more than a rescue.

Sengoku's expression hardened.

"You were once a member of Whitebeard's crew. You betrayed your captain, killed one of your own comrades, and disappeared. Now you return in the middle of a war between the Marines and Whitebeard Pirates."

He tightened his grip on his weapon.

"Tell me, Teach. Why did you come here?"

Teach's grin widened.

"Why?" He spread his arms as though the answer should have been obvious. "Because I wanted a chance to become a Warlord of the Sea."

Several Marines exchanged confused glances.

Sengoku stared at him.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"Of course!" Teach laughed. "Think about it. The Government needed someone capable of replacing Crocodile. Someone strong enough to be useful, but dangerous enough that nobody would dare underestimate him."

He tapped a finger against his chest.

"And I gave them exactly what they wanted."

Sengoku's eyes narrowed.

"You're saying you deliberately allowed yourself to be captured?"

"Not exactly." Teach chuckled. "I simply made sure the Government would notice me."

He paused, his expression becoming more serious.

"I knew the only way to get inside Impel Down was to have the Government recognize me as one of their allies."

Sengoku's expression changed slightly.

"Impel Down..."

Teach nodded.

"That place is filled with monsters the Government itself locked away because they were too dangerous to leave free."

His grin returned.

"And I needed monsters."

The Marines around him stiffened.

Sengoku finally understood.

"You never wanted the title of Warlord for its authority."

Teach laughed.

"Zehahahaha! Authority? I don't need the Government to give me that."

He looked toward the battlefield.

"I wanted access."

The word hung heavily in the air.

"Access to Impel Down. Access to the world's greatest criminals. Access to everything the Government keeps hidden behind its walls."

Teach's eyes gleamed with ambition.

"I knew the war would draw everyone's attention toward Marineford. Whitebeard, the Marines, the Admirals... everyone would be watching each other."

He slowly clenched his fist.

"That gave me the perfect opportunity."

Sengoku's face darkened.

"So the Warlord system was nothing more than a stepping stone."

"Exactly."

Teach's laughter returned, louder this time.

"I didn't become a Warlord because I wanted to serve the Government."

He pointed toward himself.

"I became one because it was the fastest way to get where I needed to go."

Sengoku's gaze hardened.

Then Teach glanced toward the place where Whitebeard stood.

His eyes lingered on the old Emperor.

"And now that I've made it this far..."

His grin slowly returned.

"...there's no reason for me to stop."

Sengoku understood the danger immediately.

"You're planning to take something from Whitebeard."

Teach laughed.

"Not just something."

His eyes gleamed beneath the shadow of his hat.

"Everything."

Behind him, his crew began to spread farther across the battlefield.

Sengoku tightened his stance.

"You're even more dangerous than I thought."

Teach's laughter echoed through the ruins.

"Zehahahahaha!"

The Marines around him shifted uneasily.

Even the Warlords reacted.

Mihawk watched Teach without changing expression, his golden eyes studying the newcomer.

Gecko Moria's gaze hardened.

"He reeks of treachery."

Doflamingo, meanwhile, smiled beneath his glasses.

"Fufufu... Now this is getting interesting."

The situation had become absurd.

The war had already reached its breaking point.

And now a man who had spent years hiding his ambitions had finally stepped onto the world's largest stage.

Above the battlefield, several Marine soldiers exchanged nervous glances.

"Is the Government really going to let him do this?"

"He's a former Warlord!"

"Former or not, look at the people behind him!"

The prisoners of Impel Down stood behind Teach like monsters that had been unleashed from a cage.

Crocodile's eyes narrowed.

Even he understood what Teach's arrival meant.

"This bastard didn't come here to save anyone."

"Then what does he want?" Daz Bonez glanced toward him.

Crocodile's gaze remained fixed on Teach.

"Whatever he can take."

Not far away, Luffy stared at the newcomers in confusion.

"Blackbeard..."

"You know him?" Sabo's expression immediately became serious.

"He was on Jaya." Luffy nodded slowly.

"Teach." Ace's eyes hardened.

Unlike Luffy, Ace knew exactly what kind of man stood before them.

His hand curled into a fist.

The anger that had been buried beneath everything that had happened at Marineford suddenly resurfaced.

That man was the reason Ace had been captured.

The reason the war had begun.

And now he had come here to take advantage of its aftermath.

Sabo noticed Ace's expression.

"Ace."

"I know."

Ace didn't look away.

"Don't worry. I'm not going after him." His eyes shifted toward Whitebeard. "Not now."

Sabo nodded.

But before either brother could say anything more, another presence caught their attention.

Arthur.

He stood several dozen meters away, watching Teach in complete silence.

Unlike the others, he didn't look surprised.

His eyes remained fixed on the darkness hidden behind Teach's grin.

Teach noticed him.

For the briefest moment, their eyes met across the battlefield.

The smile remained, but his eyes had changed.

He knew who Arthur was.

Everyone in the New World did.

The pirate who had challenged Shanks.

The man who had fought Admirals.

The captain whose crew possessed abilities that defied the world's expectations.

And, most importantly—

the only other pirate crew known to possess the impossible secret of multiple Devil Fruit powers.

Teach's gaze lingered on Arthur.

Then his smile returned.

"Zehahaha..."

Arthur said nothing.

He simply watched.

There was no need to confront him.

Not yet.

Teach had finally revealed himself.

And everyone on that battlefield was beginning to understand the same thing.

Blackbeard had not come to participate in the war.

He had come to claim what the war had left behind.
