The battlefield had become a living storm.
Smoke covered the frozen bay. Cannon fire thundered across Marineford while pirates and Marines fought over every inch of ground. Giants clashed near the fortress walls, Pacifistas continued firing their devastating beams, and the Admirals moved through the chaos like forces of nature.
Yet through all the chaos, one thing remained unchanged.
Ace was still on the execution platform.
His wrists were bound behind him, and his eyes remained fixed on the figures fighting their way toward him.
Then he saw the familiar straw hat emerge through the smoke.
"Luffy…" Ace's voice was barely audible.
Luffy was running.
Sabo was beside him, fighting off Marines who attempted to surround them. Behind the two brothers came a silver-haired figure whose presence alone forced veteran Marines to hesitate.
Rayleigh.
The former right hand of the Pirate King moved calmly through the battlefield, his sword drawn as he intercepted anyone attempting to reach Luffy from behind.
"Keep going, Luffy!" Rayleigh deflected a Marine's attack. "You're almost there!"
Luffy didn't look back. "I'm saving Ace!"
Sabo followed closely.
"I'll clear the way!" He struck down another group of Marines before turning toward Luffy. "Don't stop!"
"I won't!"
The three continued forward.
From the Athena, Arthur watched in silence.
"They're getting closer." Robin stood beside him, her eyes following the advancing trio.
Arthur nodded.
"Let him move." His gaze remained on Luffy.
But while Luffy and his companions fought their way toward the execution platform, another battle was unfolding deeper within the Whitebeard Pirates' formation. The chaos of Marineford had created countless openings for both sides, and not every threat was coming from the Marines.
Across the battlefield, Whitebeard continued directing his forces.
"Push forward!"
His voice carried over the roar of battle.
The Whitebeard Pirates surged toward the fortress.
But then—
A familiar figure appeared behind him.
Squard, one of Whitebeard's allies, approached with his sword in hand.
His expression was twisted with anger and grief.
"Whitebeard…"
The old Emperor turned slightly.
"Squard?"
Before anyone could react—
SHNK!
The blade pierced Whitebeard's torso from behind.
The battlefield seemed to freeze.
Marco's eyes widened. "Pops!"
"SQUARD!" Jozu turned sharply.
Blood spilled across Whitebeard's massive body.
Squard's hands trembled around his sword.
"I trusted you…"
Whitebeard lowered his gaze toward the blade protruding from his chest.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he slowly turned around.
Squard stared at him.
His face was filled with tears.
"They told us… They said you were going to sacrifice us…"
Whitebeard looked at him.
The anger Squard expected never came.
Instead, Whitebeard reached forward.
His enormous arms wrapped around Squard.
The pirate froze. "P-Pops…?"
"You're my idiot son." Whitebeard pulled him closer.
Squard's face crumpled. "I… I'm sorry…"
Whitebeard tightened his embrace.
"Don't apologize." His voice remained calm despite the blood flowing from his wound. "You were fooled."
Squard began crying.
"That's enough." Whitebeard released him slowly.
Squard collapsed to his knees.
Around them, the Whitebeard Pirates stood speechless.
Marco clenched his fists. "He still forgives him…"
Whitebeard turned toward the Marine fortress.
His expression had changed.
The wound in his chest was serious.
But the old Emperor remained standing.
Seeing Whitebeard still standing after the betrayal sent a surge of courage through his forces. Whatever doubts had shaken his allies moments earlier were gone. Their captain was wounded, but he had not fallen—and neither had his determination to reach Ace.
"Listen up!" His voice thundered across the battlefield. "You're pirates. Believe what you want to believe. Don't you dare let this stop you!"
The Whitebeard Pirates roared in response.
"YES, POPS!"
Whitebeard raised his bisento.
His gaze settled upon the Admirals.
"If they want a war…" His fists tightened. "…then I'll give them one."
His declaration was answered by the roar of his men. But before the Whitebeard Pirates could press deeper into the fortress, two of Marineford's greatest powers moved to intercept their captain.
"Whitebeard." Aokiji suddenly appeared ahead of him.
Ice spread across the ground.
At almost the same moment, magma erupted from the opposite side.
Sakazuki stepped forward. "You should've stayed in your grave, old man."
Whitebeard grinned.
"Gurararara…" He raised his fists. "I'm not dying yet."
Aokiji attacked first.
"Ice Block: Partisan!"
Massive ice spears shot toward Whitebeard.
Whitebeard swung his bisento.
BOOOOM!
The ice shattered.
Akainu charged through the debris.
His fist transformed into molten magma.
"Meigo!"
Whitebeard blocked the attack.
The impact shook the battlefield.
Magma splashed across the ice.
Whitebeard's muscles tightened.
Then he struck.
A quake tore through the air.
Akainu was forced backward.
Aokiji immediately followed, sending another wave of ice across the battlefield.
Whitebeard smashed through it.
The three monsters collided.
The surrounding Marines instinctively retreated.
Marco watched from a distance.
"Pops is fighting both Admirals…"
Jozu clenched his teeth.
"He's injured, but he's still the strongest man in the world."
While the strongest fighters on both sides clashed across the battlefield, the execution platform remained dangerously isolated above the chaos. Sengoku understood that the longer the battle continued, the greater the chance that someone would reach Ace.
He could no longer afford to wait.
Above the battlefield, Ace suddenly heard a voice.
"Begin the execution."
His eyes widened.
Sengoku had given the order.
The executioners stepped forward.
Ace's breathing became heavier.
"Pops…"
He looked toward the battlefield.
Luffy was still fighting his way toward him.
"No…"
Ace clenched his fists.
"If this continues…"
He knew what would happen.
Luffy would die.
Sabo would die.
The pirates would die.
Whitebeard would die.
Ace lowered his head.
Then he looked toward the executioners.
"Do it." Sengoku's order was firm.
The executioners raised their weapons.
Ace closed his eyes.
"I won't let everyone die because of me."
The weapons began descending.
Below the platform, Luffy saw the blades falling.
For one terrible instant, the distance between him and Ace seemed impossible to cross. Every battle around him disappeared from his thoughts. The Marines, the pirates, the Admirals—all of it became meaningless.
There was only Ace.
And Luffy refused to watch his brother die.
Then—
Luffy stopped.
His eyes widened.
"ACE!"
Something exploded from within him.
A wave of overwhelming spiritual pressure erupted across Marineford.
BOOOOOOM!
The atmosphere itself seemed to tremble.
Marines collapsed where they stood.
Pirates froze.
Several soldiers dropped their weapons and fell unconscious.
Even veteran fighters turned toward the source.
Luffy stood amid the battlefield.
His eyes were fierce.
His body trembled with determination.
The pressure continued spreading.
Sabo stared at him.
"Luffy…"
Rayleigh's expression softened.
"So you've awakened it."
Arthur, watching from the Athena, narrowed his eyes.
"Haoshoku Haki."
The wave reached the execution platform.
The executioners suddenly collapsed.
Their weapons slipped from their hands.
Ace opened his eyes.
"Luffy…" He stared down in disbelief.
Luffy looked toward him.
"I told you…" He clenched his fist. "I'M COMING, ACE!"
Ace's eyes trembled.
For the first time, hope returned.
The opening created by Luffy's overwhelming burst of Haoshoku lasted only for a few precious seconds. But in a battlefield where a single moment could determine life or death, that was enough.
Someone was already moving to take advantage of it.
"Now!"
A voice rang across the battlefield.
Inazuma stepped forward.
His scissors-like blades moved through the battlefield.
SNIP.
The frozen ground transformed.
A massive bridge of ice and stone rose from the battlefield, stretching toward the execution platform.
Luffy immediately understood. "Thanks!"
He sprinted onto the bridge.
Sabo followed.
Rayleigh moved behind them, keeping the Marines away.
"Keep going!"
Luffy ran.
The bridge stretched upward.
Marine soldiers rushed toward him from every direction.
Sabo intercepted them.
"Luffy! Go!"
Sabo launched himself into the Marines.
Luffy continued upward.
Rayleigh stopped another group with a single sweeping strike.
"You have a straight path now!"
Luffy didn't hesitate.
"ACE!"
Luffy raced toward the end of the newly formed bridge, with Sabo and Rayleigh fighting to keep the Marines from closing in behind him. The execution platform was finally within reach.
But one final obstacle stood between him and Ace.
And unlike the Marines he had fought moments earlier, this was someone Luffy had known his entire life.
Then—
A familiar figure appeared at the end of the bridge.
Luffy stopped.
His eyes widened.
"Grandpa…"
Garp stood between him and the execution platform.
His fists were clenched.
His face was filled with conflict.
"You've caused enough trouble, Luffy."
There was no time left for either of them to hesitate.
Behind Luffy, the battlefield continued to collapse into chaos. Ahead of him stood the execution platform, and beyond it was Ace.
Luffy wiped the hesitation from his expression.
He had come this far.
He wasn't stopping now.
Luffy stared at him.
"I have to save Ace!"
"You can't."
Garp lowered his head.
"If you take another step…" His voice became quieter. "…I'll have to stop you."
Sabo immediately stepped forward.
"Luffy—"
"No." Luffy raised one hand. "This is my fight."
Rayleigh stopped behind them.
He understood.
Garp and Luffy stared at one another.
The battlefield continued raging around them.
Yet neither moved.
Garp's eyes trembled. "I should've known this day would come."
"Grandpa…" Luffy tightened his fists.
"I'm sorry." Garp looked at him.
"GOMU GOMU NO—" Luffy suddenly charged. "BULLET!"
Garp raised his fist.
Their attacks collided.
BOOOOOOM!
The impact shook the bridge.
For a moment, Luffy was pushed backward.
Garp's strength was overwhelming.
But Luffy refused to stop.
He planted his feet.
Then he pushed forward with everything he had.
"ACE!"
Garp's eyes widened.
Luffy's fist struck him squarely.
BAAAAAAM!
Garp was sent backward.
He crashed onto the bridge and rolled several meters before stopping.
Silence followed.
Luffy stared at him.
Garp remained on the ground.
His eyes were closed.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"I'm sorry, Luffy…"
Luffy froze.
Garp did not rise.
He had let him pass.
Luffy's expression tightened.
"Grandpa…"
Luffy forced himself to turn away.
There was no time to dwell on what had just happened. Every second mattered, and Ace was still waiting at the top of the platform.
With Sabo and Rayleigh close behind, Luffy rushed forward.
Sabo placed a hand on Luffy's shoulder.
"Keep going."
"Yeah." He turned toward the execution platform.
Luffy finally reached the top.
Ace stared at him.
"Luffy…"
"I told you I'd come." Luffy grinned.
Ace's eyes filled with tears.
"You idiot…"
Luffy turned toward the restraints.
"Now we just need to get these off."
But the Seastone restraints remained locked around Ace's wrists. Strength alone would not be enough to free him.
Then, from behind them, a familiar voice trembled.
"This is insane…"
Mr. 3.
The wax man was trembling.
He looked around at the battlefield.
"Why am I even doing this?!"
Luffy pointed toward Ace.
"Three, open them!"
Mr. 3 swallowed.
"Right!"
He raised his hands.
Wax began forming around the Seastone restraints.
Ace looked at him in disbelief.
"Don't look at me like that!" Mr. 3's hands trembled. "I've already come this far!"
The wax hardened.
A key took shape.
Mr. 3 inserted it into the lock.
Click.
Nothing happened.
"Come on…" He tried again.
The lock resisted.
Luffy leaned closer.
"Hurry!"
"I'M TRYING!"
Mr. 3 twisted the key with both hands.
CLICK.
The first cuff opened.
Ace's eyes widened.
The second cuff followed.
CLICK.
The Seastone restraints fell to the ground.
For a moment, Ace didn't move.
After everything he had endured—the imprisonment, the restraints, the execution, and the war raging beneath him—the simple sight of his freed hands felt almost unreal.
Then he slowly raised his head.
Then he looked at Luffy.
The two brothers smiled at each other.
Ace had barely taken a step away from the restraints when a massive presence descended upon the platform.
Sengoku stood at the edge of the execution platform, his expression hard.
"Enough."
The Fleet Admiral raised both hands.
Golden light erupted around his body.
His figure began to expand, his silhouette growing larger and larger until the human form was replaced by a gigantic golden Buddha.
The entire platform trembled beneath his weight.
Sengoku had transformed.
His massive golden body towered over Luffy, Ace, Sabo, Rayleigh, and Mr. 3.
Ace's eyes widened.
"He's going to destroy the platform!"
Sabo immediately moved closer to Ace.
"Luffy!"
"I know!"
Luffy grabbed Ace's arm.
"Gomu-Gomu no Fusen!"
Sengoku brought his enormous palms together.
The air around him compressed.
Then—
BOOOOOOOM!
A tremendous shockwave exploded outward.
The execution platform was obliterated.
Stone shattered beneath them.
The massive structure collapsed in an instant, sending fragments of stone and clouds of dust into the sky.
"ACE!"
Luffy lost his footing.
Sabo grabbed him before he could fall.
Rayleigh landed several meters away, his eyes narrowing as he watched the collapsing structure.
"Everyone, move!"
The platform disappeared beneath the explosion.
Flames erupted through the wreckage.
For several seconds, nothing could be seen.
The Marines below stared upward.
The pirates froze.
Even the surrounding battlefield seemed to fall silent.
Then—
A figure slowly emerged from the flames.
Ace.
His body was bruised and covered in dust, but he was standing.
Free.
Luffy stood beside him, gripping his arm.
Sabo landed on Ace's other side.
Rayleigh watched from behind them.
The flames continued burning around the shattered remains of the execution platform.
Ace looked at his freed wrists.
Then toward Luffy.
A smile slowly appeared on his face.
"You really did it…"
Luffy grinned.
"Of course."
Behind them, Sengoku's enormous golden form remained standing amid the destruction.
His voice thundered across Marineford.
"Do you really think freeing Ace means you've won?"
Luffy turned toward him.
His expression hardened.
"No."
He pulled his straw hat down over his eyes.
"We're just getting started."
Ace stepped forward.
The flames reflected across his face.
Sabo tightened his fists.
Rayleigh drew his sword.
And far across the battlefield, Arthur watched the four figures standing within the burning ruins.
The execution platform was gone.
Ace was free.
But the Paramount War had just entered its most dangerous phase.
Across Marineford, the battle had already begun to shift again. Whitebeard was still locked in combat with the Admirals, the Marines were reorganizing around the newly threatened execution platform, and every commander on both sides understood what Ace's freedom meant.
The Marines could no longer fight merely to protect the platform.
Now they had to take Ace back.
Arthur watched from the Athena.
His eyes remained fixed on the execution platform.
Luffy had succeeded.
But the balance of the war had changed.
Arthur's expression hardened.
"Now…" He looked toward the battlefield. "…the real turning point begins."
