Chapter 21 - Don’t Test the Line I Drew Around You

The air in the villa felt different again.

Not heavier.

Not lighter.

More defined.

Like invisible lines had been drawn without anyone agreeing to them.

Shen Yichen stood closer to Lin Yue than before.

Not touching more than necessary.

But never far.

Lu Han noticed it immediately.

"You're starting to restrict her space," he said sharply.

Shen Yichen didn't look at him.

"I'm not restricting anything," he replied.

A pause.

"I'm defining distance."

Lin Yue looked at him.

"That's the same thing in practice," she said softly.

Shen Yichen turned to her instantly.

"No," he said.

A beat.

"Restriction is removal."

A pause.

"This is prevention."

Silence.

Lin Yue studied him carefully.

"Prevention of what?"

Shen Yichen didn't hesitate.

"Loss."

That single word again.

Always the center.

Lu Han stepped forward.

"You're treating her like a fragile object instead of a person."

Shen Yichen finally looked at him fully.

Slow.

Cold.

"I'm treating her like something I almost lost permanently," he said.

A pause.

"And I won't repeat that mistake."

Lin Yue's fingers shifted slightly.

Not pulling away.

Just acknowledging the weight of his words.

"You keep assuming I'm going to leave," she said softly.

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"Yes."

Simple.

Honest.

Unchanging.

Lin Yue frowned slightly.

"But I'm here."

Shen Yichen's gaze softened just a fraction.

"For now."

That answer made the air tighten again.

Because it wasn't doubt.

It was expectation of eventual separation.

Lu Han exhaled sharply.

"You're building a self-fulfilling fear loop," he said.

Shen Yichen didn't react.

"I'm building preparation," he corrected.

A pause.

"For when it happens."

Lin Yue looked at him for a long moment.

"What if it doesn't happen?" she asked quietly.

Shen Yichen didn't answer immediately.

That pause was the first crack in his certainty.

Then softly:

"It already did once."

Silence.

That was his entire foundation.

Not future fear.

Past loss.

Lin Yue stepped slightly closer this time.

Not away.

Closer.

Shen Yichen noticed instantly.

His gaze sharpened.

But he didn't move.

Just watched her.

Lin Yue spoke gently.

"You're living inside the version of reality where I'm already gone."

Shen Yichen's voice lowered.

"That version is real."

Lin Yue shook her head slightly.

"It's not happening now."

A pause.

He didn't respond immediately.

Then:

"It doesn't matter."

That answer made Lu Han tense again.

Shen Yichen continued, quieter:

"If it happened once, it can happen again."

Lin Yue held his gaze.

"And you think controlling distance stops that?"

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"Yes."

Simple.

Absolute.

Lin Yue exhaled softly.

"You can't control people by controlling proximity."

Shen Yichen stepped half a step closer.

Not aggressive.

Just instinctive.

"I'm not controlling you," he said quietly.

A pause.

"I'm staying close to what matters."

Lin Yue didn't step back.

But her voice softened.

"You're afraid of losing me so much that you're starting to confuse closeness with safety."

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"Yes."

A pause.

"And I don't see another option."

Silence.

Lu Han stepped forward again.

"There are other ways to heal—"

Shen Yichen cut him off immediately.

"I'm not healing."

A pause.

"I'm staying intact."

Then he looked at Lin Yue.

Their distance was minimal now.

And his voice softened just slightly.

"If I stay close enough," he said quietly,

"you don't disappear."

A pause.

"And I don't break."

Silence settled again.

And Lin Yue finally understood something clearly.

He wasn't trying to control her.

He was trying to prevent his own collapse through her presence.

And to him—

that wasn't obsession.

That was survival.
