Chapter 20 - I Don’t Care Who Comes for You

The room felt colder after his words.

Not because the temperature changed.

But because Shen Yichen's certainty filled every corner of it.

"I won't let them."

Lin Yue stared at him for a long moment.

Then quietly:

"You say that like people will try to take me."

Shen Yichen didn't blink.

"They already tried once," he said.

A pause.

"And they succeeded."

Silence.

That sentence changed the atmosphere instantly.

Lu Han stepped forward sharply.

"You're starting to project threats onto everything," he said.

Shen Yichen finally looked at him.

Slow.

Controlled.

"I'm starting to remember patterns," he replied.

A pause.

"And none of them end with me keeping her."

Lin Yue's expression tightened slightly.

"You don't even know who 'they' are," she said softly.

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"Your family," he said.

No hesitation.

Lin Yue went still.

Lu Han's jaw tightened.

"That's not confirmed," he said quickly.

Shen Yichen didn't look away.

"It feels confirmed."

That line landed heavier than logic.

Because he wasn't guessing anymore.

He was aligning truth with instinct.

Lin Yue exhaled slowly.

"You're letting emotion define reality," she said.

Shen Yichen nodded again.

"Yes."

Simple.

Final.

"And reality without you doesn't work."

Silence.

Lu Han stepped forward.

"You're isolating her from the world mentally before you even realize it."

Shen Yichen finally turned toward him fully.

And his voice dropped lower.

"If the world takes her from me," he said quietly,

"I don't want the world."

Silence dropped instantly.

Not dramatic.

Just absolute.

Lin Yue felt it then.

The shift had completed.

This wasn't instability anymore.

This was commitment built on fear of loss.

Shen Yichen turned back to her.

Their hands were still joined.

And this time—

he didn't look uncertain at all.

"I don't care who comes for you," he said softly.

A pause.

"I'll deal with them."

Lin Yue frowned slightly.

"That's not your burden alone."

Shen Yichen shook his head once.

"It is."

A beat.

"Because if I lose you again…"

His grip tightened just slightly.

Not painful.

But undeniable.

"…I won't survive it the same way."

Silence.

That was the truth beneath everything.

Not romance.

Not obsession.

Dependency sharpened into purpose.

Lin Yue studied him carefully.

"You're building your entire future around keeping me near you," she said quietly.

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"I already did," he replied.

A pause.

"I'm just aware of it now."

Lu Han exhaled sharply.

"This isn't love," he said again.

Shen Yichen looked at him briefly.

Then said:

"I didn't ask it to be."

A pause.

"But it's the only thing keeping me from being empty."

Silence.

Lin Yue looked at him for a long moment.

And for the first time—

she didn't see confusion in him at all.

Only direction.

Fixed.

Unmoving.

A man who had decided that proximity was not optional anymore.

It was survival.
