BONG. BONG. BONG.
The colossal iron bell of the Grand Cathedral rang, the deep, vibrating sound echoing mournfully across the entire Imperial Capital.
Inside the massive, vaulted hall, the atmosphere was utterly suffocating. The political tension in the air was so immensely heavy it felt like breathing water. Hundreds of high-ranking nobles were gathered, strictly segregated by their territories. The Northern Lords stood wrapped in thick, oppressive white furs; the Southern elite wore opulent, shimmering silks that masked their venom; the Eastern delegation stood at attention in sharp blue uniforms; and the Royal Family commanded the center.
Every single eye in the vast Cathedral was locked entirely onto Lyra.
The silence was absolute and crushing. It wasn't a silence of holy reverence; it was a silence of pure, calculating judgment. They were watching her every step, waiting like starving wolves to see if the "half breed" Princess would falter under the divine weight of the Holy Light.
By the strict, unbreakable, ancient laws of the ceremony, the expectant mother had to approach the Holy Altar entirely alone. Because of this archaic decree, Zion was forced to walk exactly three paces behind seventeen year old Lyra. He could not stand next to her. He could not hold her trembling hand.
He kept his head lowered, closing his eyes for a fraction of a second to push his eighteen year old, Three Aditya sensory magic toward the pristine marble altar at the front of the room.
The magical static was exponentially worse than yesterday. The oppressive, sickening pulse of malice Zion had felt buried beneath the floorboards was no longer a faint hum. It was violently throbbing.
It's closer today, Zion thought, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth practically cracked. Whatever it is. But the signature was still entirely clouded by the ambient holy magic. Without absolute proof, stepping forward and drawing a blade would be an act of continental heresy.
The most profound blasphemy is not the physical destruction of a holy sanctuary; it is the silent, arrogant weaponization of faith, using the divine to mask an impending slaughter.
In the third row of the polished wooden pews, an elderly, blind monk slowly adjusted his wooden prayer beads. Beneath the heavy robes, Commander Vesper's thumb rested gently over a hidden, razor sharp wire coiled tightly inside the wood.
High up on the second-tier balcony, a young choir boy holding a golden hymnal didn't even glance at the altar. His sharp, deadly eyes were locked dead onto the Southern VIP balcony.
Down at the front, an acolyte slowly lighting the tall ceremonial candles paused. His hand hovered just an inch above the hilt of a magic sealing dagger strapped seamlessly beneath his pristine white robes.
The elite assassins of the Obsidian Owls were in flawless position. They were completely ready to slaughter the entire room and paint the Cathedral walls red. But they remained perfectly still, waiting in the holy shadows for the Emperor's invisible, absolute permission to strike.
High in the shadowed balcony overlooking the nave, Marchioness Cassandra Thorne stood perfectly, unnaturally still. She didn't smile. She didn't whisper to the other Southern nobles. She simply watched the marble altar with the predatory, unblinking stillness of a viper preparing to strike.
Outside the Cathedral's massive stained glass windows, a subtle, metallic clink echoed softly through the freezing winter wind. The Northern Knights were beginning their tactical movements. Without a single shouted order, they slowly shifted their heavy iron shields, forming an impenetrable, militaristic blockade around the Cathedral gates. The trap was finally closing.
Cowards do not strike when their enemy is standing tall and looking them in the eye; they wait in the shadows until their victim's head is bowed in vulnerable prayer.
Lyra took another slow, agonizing step down the heavy velvet runner of the center aisle.
The echoing footsteps of the massive crowd, the ringing of the iron bell, the judgmental whispering of the priests all of it slowly faded from her ears. The world tuned down to a dull, muffled, underwater hum.
She focused entirely on her chest. Thump... Thump... Thump. She meticulously paced her heartbeat, forcing her blood to flow steadily, utilizing every ounce of her willpower to keep her fragile mana core completely calm to protect the unborn twins.
She was incredibly, suffocatingly nervous. The sheer volume of oppressive holy magic pressing down from the Cathedral ceilings made her stomach churn violently. But she held desperately onto the lie Zion had told her yesterday in the quiet corridor: You're thinking too much. Nothing is going to happen.
Her pale hand, resting gently over her stomach, was shaking slightly.
A brilliant beam of morning sunlight pierced through the high stained glass, striking Lyra directly. The expensive silver threads woven into her Imperial gown caught the light flawlessly. For a fleeting moment, she looked radiant like a glowing, untouchable, divine beacon walking through the dark, hostile shadows of a corrupted church.
Lyra finally reached the steps of the grand altar.
The very second her silk slipper touched the first marble stair, Zion's sensory magic went completely, violently crazy. The sickening, rotting pulse beneath the altar spiked into a deafening, apocalyptic roar in his mind.
Danger.
Zion's lethal instincts instantly overrode the holy law. His right foot stepped forward. His hand reached out to grab her wrist and physically rip her away from the altar.
"Zion."
The whisper was so incredibly faint, buried beneath the chanting of the choir, that only he could hear it.
Zion looked sharply to the side. Emperor Aldric was standing rigidly at the perimeter of the Royal boundary. He didn't turn his head to look at Zion. His scarred face was a mask of cold, unreadable, glacial ice. But down by his side, hidden within the folds of his massive winter cloak, his hand subtly shifted. A single, armored finger extended.
Hold.
It was an absolute, unbreakable command from the Sovereign of the Empire. They needed the trap to visibly spring so they could expose the Southern and Northern rot to the entire continent.
Zion's muscles locked up entirely. The restraint was pure, physical, tearing agony. He gritted his teeth, digging his fingernails into his palms until hot blood pooled in his gloves, violently forcing his boot to step back into line.
The ultimate, agonizing test of a protector is not the willingness to blindly draw a blade, but the unbearable, soul-crushing discipline required to let a trap spring so the true monsters can finally be dragged into the light.
[The Anomaly]
While the corrupt High Priest Severin cowered in the unlit catacombs below, High Priest Malachi ignorant of the rot beneath his feet stepped forward from the shadows of the apse. He raised his hands high above his head, holding a massive golden sun-crest.
"O...Original Light, bless this child of the Empire," Malachi chanted, his devout voice echoing powerfully through the vast hall.
The holy ritual began. The ambient, golden holy magic of the Cathedral began to gather at the vaulted ceiling, slowly descending like a warm, brilliant pillar of pure white light. Everything looked perfect. Everything looked completely, beautifully normal.
Lyra slowly lowered herself to the plush velvet cushion at the base of the altar, bowing her silver head in reverence.
The pillar of holy light touched the stone altar.
Zion watched the light with burning crimson eyes. And then, it happened.
The pure, brilliant white light hit the marble and suddenly, violently flickered. It bent unnaturally, as if the holy light itself was physically choking on poison. And then, a distinct, sickening, pitch-black ripple shot out from beneath the stone, instantly infecting the holy glow.
Zion's eyes blew wide open.
Lyra violently gasped. A sudden, sharp, terrifying spike of necrotic pain pierced straight through her stomach. Her breath completely stopped in her throat. The light entirely distorted around her, turning heavy, putrid, and blindingly dark.
Zion's agonizing control completely, irreparably shattered.
"STOP!"
His dual layered, monstrous voice cut through the absolute silence of the Cathedral like a world ending crack of thunder.
