Chapter 40 - Chapter 40:The Bleeding Crown and the Anchor of Light

"You touched what belongs to me… inside a holy place."

My dual layered voice didn't echo. It didn't need to. The absolute, freezing intent behind my words bypassed the ears and sank directly into the marrow of every Southern noble and corrupt priest cowering in the nave.

I held seventeen year old Lyra tightly against my chest, shielding her from the horrified stares of the congregation. Her breathing was finally steady, the mysterious, miraculous divine pulse having successfully stabilized her fractured core, but she remained completely unresponsive. Her skin was as pale as the pristine white marble beneath my boots.

Deep inside my soul, the chaotic, monstrous Three Aditya mana was absolutely screaming at me. It violently demanded that I put her down, draw my heavy broadsword, and paint the gilded walls of the Cathedral with the blood of every single person who had just stood by and watched her suffer. The Beast attribute of my core wanted absolute, unadulterated slaughter. It wanted to tear the Southern Dukes apart with my bare hands until there was nothing left but ash and bone.

No, I told myself, biting the inside of my cheek so hard the copper taste of hot blood flooded my mouth. If I let the monster loose now, if I slaughter them all on holy ground, I am no better than the demons they falsely accused her of carrying. I am her anchor. I must be a husband first, and an executioner second.

The absolute true measure of a man's strength is not the violence he is capable of unleashing, but the terrifying amount of rage he is willing to swallow to protect the peace of the one he loves.

"This is an absolute outrage!" Count Valerius, Duke Alistair's sniveling right-hand man, suddenly stepped forward from the trembling crowd. He pointed a shaking, ring-laden finger at the dead High Priest and the stoic Obsidian Owls, who were still quietly holding their bloody garrote wires. "You brought Imperial assassins into the Holy Sanctum! You murdered the High Priest of the Original God! This is a severe sacrilege! A blasphemy against the heavens themselves!"

The remaining Southern nobles immediately murmured in desperate, panicked agreement, trying to use the rigid holy laws to mask their failed, cowardly assassination attempt. They were desperately trying to build a wall of political resistance, violently twisting the narrative to paint the Crown as the true villains of the day.

"Silence."

Emperor Aldric stepped slowly down from the Royal boundary. He didn't raise his terrifying voice, but the sheer, apocalyptic weight of his Darkness magic effortlessly flared. A localized, crushing gravitational field slammed into the room. High above, the massive, priceless stained-glass windows depicting the Primordial Gods cracked under the atmospheric pressure, raining colorful dust down upon the pews.

"The only sacrilege committed today was hiding a rotting, cursed relic beneath the Original Light," Aldric stated, his glacial eyes sweeping over the sweating, pale faces of the Southern delegation. The Emperor's massive hand rested casually on the pommel of his sheathed sword. "If any Lord in this room wishes to publicly defend a corrupt priest who attempted to murder the unborn Imperial Heirs... step forward right now. Step forward, and share his fate."

The resistance instantly, pathetically crumbled. Count Valerius swallowed so hard it was audible in the silent hall. He took three frantic steps backward, melting into the crowd, his cowardly eyes glued to the stone floor.

I didn't wait for the Emperor to officially dismiss the assembly. The air in the Cathedral reeked of incense, rot, and political venom, and I needed to get Lyra away from it immediately. I turned my broad back on the terrified nobles and carried my wife straight down the center aisle, kicking the massive iron doors of the Cathedral wide open and shielding her delicate frame from the biting cold winter wind.

But as I walked out into the frozen courtyard, I caught the gaze of a lowly, unassuming acolyte standing near the grand archway. The acolyte didn't look scared. He didn't look horrified by the exposure of the cursed relic. Instead, he offered me a subtle, incredibly mocking smile. Slowly, deliberately, the acolyte tapped his chest exactly over the spot where a black feather insignia was hidden beneath his pristine white robes.

Cassandra Thorne's network, I realized, my jaw clenching so hard my teeth ached. They are still deeply, inherently embedded in the church. They sacrificed a High Priest like a simple pawn just to test our defenses. This war isn't over. It has barely even begun.

While the Kaelen Empire dealt with the explosive, divine fallout of the Cathedral trap, an entirely different nightmare was violently unfolding across the eastern continental border.

In the neighboring Jeal Kingdom, lightning flashed and thunder cracked violently against the thick stone walls of the Royal Palace. The torrential winter rain hammered against the glass, trying to wash away the sins occurring inside.

Hot, dark blood pooled across the polished marble floors of the grand throne room. The King of Jeal lay dead at the foot of his own throne, a poisoned, jagged dagger protruding directly from his spine. The royal guards meant to protect him lay slaughtered in the corridors, betrayed by their own commanders.

Standing victorious over the cooling body of the monarch was Duke Malus, the most treacherous, power hungry Lord in the Jeal kingdom.

Standing completely alone opposite to him was seventeen-year-old Crown Princess Seris. She was dressed in a traditional, heavy mourning black gown, her pale hands shaking violently. But she refused to look away. Her sharp, striking eyes burned with fierce, desperate defiance. She was exactly one year away from her coming-of-age ceremony the day she would legally, undeniably inherit the crown and the military might of Jeal.

"A tragic, sudden loss for our beloved kingdom," Duke Malus sneered, casually wiping the King's blood from his armored hands with a fine silk cloth. He stepped over the King's body without a shred of remorse. "With the King tragically assassinated by 'unknown rebels,' and you still a vulnerable, inexperienced minor, the Kingdom is weak, Princess Seris. The borders are vulnerable. The people will panic. But do not worry. I offer my nine-year-old son to you in marriage. I will gladly rule as your Regent to 'protect' your fragile throne until you come of age."

Seris gritted her teeth, biting her tongue so hard she tasted her own blood. She knew exactly what Malus was doing. He had brazenly murdered her father, and forcing her to marry a nine-year-old puppet would give the corrupt Duke absolute, legal military control. And the very moment she came of age and was no longer needed for legitimacy, she would quietly suffer a 'tragic accident' and be executed.

"I entirely decline your generous offer, Duke Malus," Seris said, her voice dropping to a freezing, absolute cold. She lifted her chin, the heavy crown of her ancestors practically visible on her brow.

Malus's arrogant, patronizing smile vanished, replaced by a cold, murderous glare. "You are an orphaned minor, Princess. The generals answer to me now. You do not have the military backing to decline me."

"We will see about that," Seris turned sharply on her heel, her black skirts swirling around her boots. She walked swiftly toward the heavy oak doors of the throne room. Waiting anxiously on the other side were twenty heavily armed, fanatically loyal Royal Guards the last remaining fraction of the military that had not been bought by Malus's gold.

Duke Malus was genuinely shocked, taking a step forward. "The Kaelen Empire?! You would cross the hostile border at night into Emperor Aldric's terrifying territory? They are our ancient, blood-sworn enemies! Are you completely insane?! I forbid this!"

Seris paused at the massive doors, looking over her shoulder with absolute, aristocratic disdain. The terrified girl was gone; only the Sovereign remained.

"Are you denying a direct, sovereign order from your Crown Princess, Duke?" Seris challenged, her voice ringing through the blood soaked hall. "Try to stop my carriage. Order your men to draw their swords against their rightful Queen, and my loyalists will burn your estates to the absolute ground before the sun rises."

True sovereignty is not handed down through a golden crown it is forged the exact moment you are completely surrounded by wolves, yet refuse to stop acting like a lion.

Seris pushed through the heavy doors, stepping into the protective circle of her loyal knights. "We leave tonight," she ordered her captain, her voice shaking only slightly as the adrenaline peaked. "Not tomorrow morning. Tonight. As fast as the warhorses can run. Ride for the Kaelen border."

The massive, sterile room of the Kaelen Royal Infirmary was completely silent, save for the soft, comforting crackling of the medical fireplace in the corner.

I sat in a rigid wooden chair beside the plush medical bed, my heavy head resting completely exhausted on the edge of the mattress. I hadn't taken off my formal uniform, and the dried blood on my knuckles from shattering the Cathedral barrier flaked against the pristine white bedsheets.

Arthur and Seraphina stood silently near the frosted glass window, keeping a lethal, unblinking watch over the perimeter of the courtyard. Down the hall in his adjacent study, Emperor Aldric was methodically reviewing the catastrophic fallout reports, instantly purging any Southern sympathizers from the Capital guard.

Slowly, Lyra's long, silver eyelashes fluttered.

She took a soft, deep breath, her deep blue eyes carefully adjusting to the warm, flickering light of the infirmary fire. She shifted slightly, her hand instinctively moving to protect her stomach.

"Mom?!"

Before I could even lift my heavy head, two tiny, frantic blurs launched themselves entirely onto the bed. Five-year-old Leo and Mia buried their tear-stained faces into Lyra's sides, sobbing uncontrollably. They had been waiting anxiously in the corner of the room for hours, holding hands, terrified that the Cathedral incident had taken their mother away forever.

"Mom, please don't leave us!" Leo cried, his tiny, scarred hands gripping the fabric of her white gown desperately.

"You can't leave! You promised you would stay!" Mia sobbed, heavy tears streaming relentlessly down her face and soaking the blankets.

Lyra's eyes widened in sheer surprise, but then instantly softened with an overwhelming, absolute maternal love. Despite her profound physical exhaustion, and the lingering ache in her magical core, she wrapped her arms tightly around both of the adopted twins, pulling them safely and warmly close to her chest.

"I'm not leaving you," Lyra whispered, her own hot tears silently falling as she kissed their heads repeatedly, burying her face in their hair. "I am right here, my sweet children. I promise you, I will never, ever leave you."

I sat up, watching the three of them hold desperately onto each other. The absolute, suffocating darkness and rage that had completely consumed me in the Cathedral the beast that had wanted to slaughter the entire Southern delegation melted away entirely. It was replaced by a fierce, unbreakable, quiet resolve. I was looking at my entire world, and they were safe.

I gently placed my large, bruised hand over Lyra's, letting her know I was there. She looked up at me, a tearful, incredibly beautiful smile crossing her pale lips. We had survived the South's greatest, most lethal trap. The divine fragment inside her had protected the twins, and we were finally together.

But as the heavy winter rain began to beat violently against the infirmary windows, mirroring the storm raging across the continent, a Royal Knight suddenly knocked frantically on the heavy oak door.

He didn't wait for permission. He burst into the room, his armor soaked, his face completely pale with panic.

"Second Prince," the Knight gasped urgently, bowing low, his chest heaving from a dead sprint across the palace grounds. "Emergency at the Eastern Border. The Crown Princess of the Jeal Kingdom has just violently breached our gates. Her carriage is heavily pursued by Duke Malus's assassins."

The Knight swallowed hard, looking up with wide eyes. "She is begging for absolute asylum... and she is demanding to speak directly to you."

The quiet, hard earned peace in the infirmary shattered in a single instant. The political board of the continent had just violently reset, and a completely new, massive storm had arrived directly at our doorstep.
