The closer we got to the gates, the slower everything moved.
Cars packed the road bumper to bumper, crawling forward a few metres at a time. People moved between them carrying bags, children, pets-anything they'd managed to bring with them.
Police officers stood along the temporary fencing while workers in bright vests directed cars towards different entrances.
For the first time since everything had started, it looked like someone knew what they were doing.
"Wait."
Will suddenly leaned between our seats.
"That one."
He pointed towards a dark blue sedan several rows ahead.
"That looks like Mum's."
Ryan followed where he was pointing.
"Can you see the plate?"
"No."
Will shifted towards the window.
"Fuck."
"We'll check when we get closer."
"What if they've already gone inside?"
"Then we'll find them inside."
Will dropped back into his seat, but his knee immediately started bouncing.
