Chapter 28 - Sausages Fix Most Things

The car continued down the road, for a while, none of us spoke.

Ryan kept his attention ahead, both hands resting firmly on the steering wheel while I watched the scenery pass through the passenger window.

The further we travelled from Brisbane, the fewer buildings we passed. Every now and then, another car rushed by.

Most were packed, suitcases pressed against windows, blankets piled across back seats, children squeezed between bags and whatever belongings their parents had managed to grab. One car passed with a mattress strapped terribly to the roof, one corner lifting dangerously every time the wind caught it.

Under different circumstances, Will probably would've made some stupid comment about it.

He didn't.

Nobody waved.

Nobody slowed down.

Everyone was going somewhere that was away from what's happening.

I glanced down at my phone, no Service.

Still…

I sighed and switched the screen off.

Ryan had tried the radio several times already.

Nothing.
