Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Shadows of the World

The shadows looked up.

At that moment—

nothing in the real world seemed abnormal.

The streets remained noisy.

Subways continued running.

Hospital machines beeped steadily.

Teachers calmly lectured in classrooms.

Television programs continued playing.

Couples scrolled through their phones.

Children laughed and ran through playgrounds.

But no one realized—

beneath their feet—

every shadow in the world

had stopped following its owner.

Inside a shopping mall,

a woman hurried past a glass storefront carrying several shopping bags.

She herself never slowed down.

But the shadow beneath her feet—

suddenly stopped moving.

Slowly—

the shadow raised its head.

Through the floor,

it stared toward somewhere beyond reality itself.

Then—

it smiled.

The woman's entire body suddenly stiffened.

As though something had crawled inside her.

She lowered her head.

Stopped walking.

And the corners of her mouth slowly curled upward—

forming the exact same smile as her shadow.

At the same time—

in another city—

inside a late-night convenience store—

a tired clerk quietly stocked shelves beneath pale fluorescent lights.

The store was silent.

And then—

his shadow moved one second slower than he did.

Just one second.

But it was enough to make his scalp explode with terror.

The clerk froze.

Cold sweat slid down his forehead.

Because when he raised his hand—

his shadow did not move.

It simply stood there.

Head lowered.

As though staring at him.

Clack.

A bottle fell from the shelf.

And slowly—

the shadow raised its own arm.

Not following him.

Moving by itself.

"AAAAAAAHHHH—!!"

A horrific scream tore through the convenience store.

And the same thing

was happening everywhere in the world.

Some people noticed their shadows lagging behind.

Some saw their shadows move before they did.

Others discovered that the reflection in the mirror no longer matched the shadow beneath them.

And some realized—

their shadows were beginning to look at them.

They were observing.

Learning.

Adapting.

The first wave of "replacements" had begun.

The first ones to notice—

were children.

3:00 AM.

A seven-year-old girl woke from a nightmare.

Clutching her stuffed toy, she stepped barefoot into the hallway outside her bedroom.

Then—

she saw them.

Her parents were sitting quietly on the living room sofa.

The lights were off.

Neither of them spoke.

They simply sat there in silence.

Moonlight poured through the window.

Their shadows stretched long across the floor.

But those shadows—

were not attached to the ground.

They were standing upright behind her parents.

The little girl turned ice cold.

Because she saw the two shadows lowering their heads—

staring at their human bodies.

As though studying them.

Then—

her mother's shadow slowly lifted its head.

Its face was completely black.

Featureless.

And it was staring directly at her.

The girl screamed.

But what truly shattered her sanity—

was what happened next.

Her real mother—

reacted two full seconds later.

Slowly raising her head in the exact same motion.

"Sweetheart,"

her mother said softly.

The voice sounded gentle.

Yet disturbingly hollow.

"Why… are you still awake?"

Meanwhile—

inside the Observation Layer—

the entire structure was nearing total collapse.

Enormous amounts of black liquid continued merging into Lin Wan's body.

The shadow beneath her feet grew larger.

More twisted.

It began swallowing the entire space itself.

And the mechanical structures belonging to the System—

were being consumed by darkness.

"Reality stability reduced to 17%!"

"Boundary failure accelerating!"

"Unable to suppress Origin Shadow!"

For the first time—

the mechanical voice revealed genuine fear.

Zhang stared at Lin Wan.

And suddenly realized something even more horrifying.

The shadows looking up—

was not a malfunction.

It was because she had awakened.

Every shadow in existence—

was responding to her.

"LIN WAN!!"

He rushed toward her desperately.

"Stop this!! If this continues, the entire world will—"

His voice stopped abruptly.

Because Lin Wan slowly lifted her head—

and looked at him.

And in that instant—

every drop of blood in Zhang's body turned cold.

Because—

her other eye

had also become completely black.
