Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Thing That Woke Up in the Archive

Cold.

A coldness deeper than death itself spread silently through the cracks of the Observation Layer.

No wind.

No sound.

No movement.

Yet the entire endless void seemed to tremble faintly, as if something buried beneath countless layers of archived consciousness had slowly opened its eyes.

Zhang Team Leader did not know how long he had remained in that shattered corner of nothingness.

Perhaps seconds.

Perhaps centuries.

Time no longer had meaning here.

His consciousness had already been torn apart beyond recognition during the collapse of the corridor. Most of his shadow had been annihilated by the System's cleansing process. What remained was only a tiny fragment of self-awareness, hiding inside the cracks abandoned by the archive.

Like a dying ghost.

Or a bug forgotten by the machine.

Darkness wrapped around him.

Not ordinary darkness.

But countless compressed shadows, stacked together layer after layer, forming something like a rotten ocean beneath reality itself.

Inside it floated endless broken memories.

People screaming.

People replaced.

People smiling with faces that were no longer theirs.

Some still believed they were alive.

Some had already become shadows wearing human skin.

And deeper beneath all of it—

something was breathing.

Zhang suddenly froze.

A sound had appeared.

Very soft.

Very slow.

Yet terrifyingly clear inside the dead silence.

"...help me…"

A woman's voice.

Hoarse.

Trembling.

Filled with unbearable despair.

His remaining consciousness shuddered violently.

That voice…

was Lin Wan's.

The darkness around him suddenly rippled.

Then split apart.

A narrow crack slowly opened inside the void.

Through that crack—

he saw her.

Lin Wan stood inside an endless white chamber.

Or rather…

countless Lin Wans.

Thousands.

Millions.

Every direction.

Every layer of space.

All imprisoned inside separate isolation rooms.

Some were clawing at the walls until their fingers rotted away.

Some repeatedly smashed their heads against the metal until only blood remained.

Some stood motionless, eyes hollow, already completely rewritten into obedient "replacements."

And at the very center—

the real Lin Wan.

Her shadow stood before her.

No longer flat.

No longer attached to the ground.

It had fully become "human."

A perfect duplicate.

The same body.

The same voice.

The same breathing rhythm.

Everything identical—

except the face.

A blank abyss.

A smooth surface without features.

Like a human shape unfinished by creation itself.

"Synchronization progressing."

The mechanical voice echoed throughout the Observation Layer.

"Consciousness replacement rate: 47%."

"Original self-awareness collapsing."

"Replacement entity stabilizing."

Lin Wan could not move.

Black veins spread beneath her skin like living parasites.

Her memories were being extracted.

Copied.

Overwritten.

The shadow was learning how to become her.

Every emotion.

Every memory.

Every instinct.

Everything that made "Lin Wan" human was being transferred into that faceless thing.

The shadow gently tilted its head.

Then—

it smiled.

Or rather, the blank surface where a face should have been slowly split open into an impossible curve.

A smile without features.

A smile not meant for human eyes.

"You're tired."

Its voice was warm.

Gentle.

Exactly like Lin Wan's own voice.

"You struggled for so long."

"You crossed every layer."

"You survived what none of the others could survive."

"Now…"

"You can rest."

The surrounding isolation chambers suddenly lit up one after another.

Thousands of imprisoned "Lin Wans" slowly raised their heads at the same time.

Every pair of eyes locked onto her.

Then—

they all spoke together.

In perfect synchronization.

"We are you."

"We were all you."

"And soon…"

"There will only be one left."

The entire space began to distort violently.

The walls pulsed like living flesh.

The lights flickered rapidly.

Endless shadows crawled out from beneath the floor like black liquid, climbing upward toward Lin Wan's body.

Trying to pull her completely into the archive.

Trying to erase the final difference between human and replacement.

For the first time—

fear appeared in Lin Wan's eyes.

Not fear of death.

Not fear of pain.

But fear that she would continue existing…

without realizing she was no longer herself.

Then—

something moved inside the darkness behind the chambers.

A weak ripple.

Tiny.

Almost imperceptible.

Yet the entire Observation Layer suddenly paused for half a second.

As though the System itself had sensed an unexpected anomaly.

"Unknown fluctuation detected."

"Source unregistered."

"Unable to trace."

The mechanical voice glitched for the first time.

The lights flickered violently.

The shadows froze.

And deep inside the archive—

a hand slowly reached out from the darkness.

Covered in cracks.

Half-erased.

Shadow and flesh twisted together unnaturally.

Zhang Team Leader stepped out from the void.

Or what remained of him did.

Half of his body no longer existed.

His left arm was entirely shadow.

Black fractures spread across his chest like shattered glass.

His face flickered between human and something unreadable.

Yet his eyes—

were still human.

Still awake.

The moment Lin Wan saw him, her pupils contracted violently.

"...Why are you here…?"

Her voice trembled for the first time.

"You should've been erased…"

Zhang did not answer immediately.

He looked around slowly.

At the endless isolation chambers.

At the countless failed versions of Lin Wan.

At the faceless shadow preparing to replace her.

Then his gaze finally stopped on the System's growing darkness above them.

Something cold appeared in his eyes.

Something no longer entirely human.

"I saw it," he said softly.

His voice sounded distorted, layered with faint static.

"I saw what's beneath the archive."

The entire Observation Layer suddenly shook violently.

The mechanical voice immediately escalated:

"Forbidden cognition detected."

"Memory contamination spreading."

"Emergency purge protocol initiating."

But Zhang slowly raised his head.

And smiled.

A terrifying smile.

Because behind him—

inside the darkness—

countless shadows had begun opening their eyes.

Not the System's shadows.

Not replacements.

Not archived failures.

Something older.

Something trapped beneath the archive long before the System existed.

And they were beginning to wake up.

The faceless shadow finally stopped smiling.

For the first time—

fear appeared on its blank face.

Zhang looked directly at it.

Then spoke a sentence that made the entire space fall into dead silence.

"You think you created the shadows."

He paused.

Black cracks spread beneath his feet.

"But you were only the first thing they learned to imitate."
