Chapter 25 - OWEN NOTICE CHANGES

Owen didn't understand it at first.

He just felt it.

Something had changed.

Not suddenly.

Not loudly.

But enough that it stayed in the back of his mind, following him through the day.

It started with Lillian.

She wasn't the same.

Not completely.

She still sat by the window.

Still wrote in her notebook.

Still answered questions.

But there were pauses now.

Small ones.

Moments where she stopped mid-sentence like she lost track of something she normally never lost.

"Continue," Owen said softly, looking at her notes.

Lillian blinked. "Hmm?"

"You stopped," he said.

"Oh."

She looked back at the page.

Then continued explaining.

But slower.

Less confident.

Owen frowned slightly.

That wasn't her.

Then there was Bella.

Too present.

Too close.

Too… intentional.

"Owen," Bella called during class, leaning toward him again.

"Yes?"

"Did you understand what the teacher said?" she asked.

He nodded. "Yeah."

Bella smiled. "Explain it to me."

Owen paused.

Then glanced briefly at Lillian.

Lillian was already looking down.

Not reacting.

He turned back to Bella.

"Later," he said.

Bella's smile didn't drop.

But it tightened.

"Okay," she replied softly.

Owen leaned back in his chair.

His eyes moved between them.

Something wasn't lining up anymore.

Break time made it clearer.

Bella walked with him again.

Talking.

Filling silence before it could even exist.

"So you've been very serious lately," she said lightly.

Owen shrugged. "Not really."

"You are," she insisted. "You don't even joke like before."

Owen didn't answer immediately.

Because part of that was true.

At the same time, Lillian stayed back in class.

Not writing.

Just sitting.

Her pen resting on the page without moving.

Owen returned and saw her like that.

Still.

Quiet.

Different.

"You didn't go out?" he asked.

Lillian shook her head. "No."

"Why?"

"I wasn't feeling like it."

Short answer.

Too short.

Owen pulled a chair and sat beside her.

"You're acting strange," he said.

Lillian looked up. "I'm not."

"You are," he insisted gently.

She looked away. "Maybe I'm just tired."

Owen studied her face.

Then leaned back slightly.

"Did I do something?" he asked.

That made her pause.

Her fingers tightened slightly on her pen.

Then she shook her head.

"No."

Too quick.

Owen sighed quietly.

Because now he knew.

It wasn't nothing.

Across the room, Bella watched them again.

But this time—

she noticed something different too.

Owen wasn't relaxed anymore.

He wasn't just enjoying attention.

He was thinking.

Watching.

Trying to understand.

That made Bella uneasy.

Later in class, the teacher asked a question again.

Lillian hesitated.

Again.

Owen noticed immediately.

He raised his hand instead.

Answered.

But his eyes stayed on her.

After class, he stopped her.

"Lillian."

She turned. "Yes?"

Owen stepped closer.

Lowered his voice.

"Something is wrong."

Lillian shook her head. "Nothing is wrong."

"Stop saying that," he said quietly.

She went silent.

Owen softened slightly.

"If something changed… you can just say it," he added.

Lillian looked at him.

Really looked this time.

Like she wanted to say something.

Like she almost would.

Then—

Bella called from behind.

"Owen!"

He turned slightly.

Just for a second.

And that was enough.

Lillian stepped back.

"I have to go," she said quickly.

And walked away.

Owen stood there.

Watching her leave.

Not understanding everything—

but understanding enough.

Something had changed.

Between all three of them.

And for the first time—

he couldn't ignore it anymore.

Across the hallway, Bella stood still.

Watching Owen.

Watching Lillian walk away.

And she realized something too.

This wasn't just attention anymore.

This wasn't just control.

This was becoming something she might not be able to stop.
