Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Piston Cup Final

Kevin and Cobra arrived at the Motor Speedway of the South just as the final race of the 2005 Piston Cup season was about to begin. The massive stadium was packed with roaring fans, toons and Noides alike waving flags, wearing team colors, and cheering loudly. The air buzzed with excitement and the smell of popcorn, hot dogs, and motor oil.

Cobra led Kevin to a VIP section with a good view of the track. They took their seats as the announcer's voice boomed over the speakers.

His seat vibrated with the collective energy of thousands, a low hum beneath the incessant chatter and the blare of announcers' voices. On the gigantic screens above the track, the three contenders were being introduced: "The King," the seasoned veteran; Chick Hicks, the smug green challenger, and the rookie sensation, Lightning McQueen.

"Ladies and gentlemen, after days of uncertainty, Lightning McQueen has been found! The rookie sensation was discovered yesterday in a forgotten town along Route 66. He's back on the track for the final race of the season!"

Kevin leaned back in his seat, munching on a large bucket of popcorn Cobra had bought for him. He already knew how this story went, he had watched Cars multiple times in his old world. McQueen getting lost, meeting the residents of Radiator Springs, learning humility… it all led to one dramatic finale.

Still, seeing it happen live in this world was surreal. "So this world has the Cars universe too…" he muttered to himself. "I really need to do more research. Even after a month here, there's still so much I don't know."

A deep, guttural sound, like a collective inhale, swept through the stands as the countdown began. Five, four, three, two, one... The green flag waved, and a thunderous explosion of noise erupted as the cars shot forward. They blurred into streaks of color, a red flash, a green blur, a blue and white streak, all jockeying for position.

From the stands, Kevin watched as the brightly colored racers shot forward.

Lightning McQueen, sporting his iconic red paint and lightning bolt, quickly moved up the pack. The crowd cheered wildly as he battled for position against veteran racers like Chick Hicks and Strip Weathers, The King.

Kevin observed the race with a mix of nostalgia and fascination. McQueen was aggressive, pushing hard to win the Piston Cup. But as the laps progressed, the rookie started to show signs of the growth he had gained in Radiator Springs.

Mid-race, Chick Hicks made a dangerous move, intentionally causing a massive crash that took out several cars, including The King. The veteran racer spun out violently, his tires smoking as he slid toward the wall.

The stadium gasped.

Instead of continuing to chase the win, McQueen slammed on his brakes. He turned around, drove back to the crashed King, and began pushing the injured veteran across the finish line. The crowd's reaction shifted from shock to thunderous applause. Even Chick Hicks, who had crossed the finish line first, looked stunned by McQueen's sportsmanship.

Kevin smiled to himself as he watched the scene unfold exactly as he remembered from the movie. McQueen didn't win the trophy that day, but he won something far more important, respect, friendship, and a new perspective on what it meant to be a champion.

The confetti cannons exploded as the podium ceremony began.

Kevin finished his popcorn and shook his head with a small, amused smile. "Same ending… but seeing it live is something else."

Cobra, who had been quietly observing beside him, spoke in his deep voice. "An interesting race. The rookie showed real character."

Kevin nodded. "Yeah… he did."

As the crowd began to disperse, Kevin stood up. "We should head back. It's getting late."

They made their way out of the stadium and returned to the Aether Glide. The ride back to Toontownsville was smooth and fast, the scenery blurring past in the night.

By the time they arrived, it was already deep into the night. Kevin thanked Cobra for the tour and stepped out in front of his new house.

He walked in, feeling the weight of a long but productive day. The federation meeting, the race, the new farm… his life in this world was becoming more complicated and exciting with every passing day.

He had already employed local farmers, who were set to begin work once the renovation concluded. As for Melisha, she still resided in her house next to the farm. He was uncertain of her next move; in a sequel to Chicken Run he'd seen, she divorced her first husband and married a scientist who created a mind-control collar for chickens, eventually becoming an overlord of farms.

Given her opportunistic nature, as depicted in the movie and her current status, her future actions were entirely unpredictable.

Kevin kicked off his shoes, collapsed onto the sofa, and let out a tired but satisfied sigh.

Tomorrow would be another busy day.
