Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Confession

"A lot of time" was five months.

Five months of meetings. Five months of Xiao Zhan turning the continent like a key in a lock, and Qian Renxue watching his hands do it. Five months of him looking at her like she was a general, an ally, a weapon, never like a woman.

She hated it. She understood it. She kept her secret.

It broke during the Red Moon Incident.

A fragment of a God-tier spirit beast — a "Blood Phoenix" — crashed into the Heaven Dou western border. Rank 95 in strength, insane with pain. It would have killed a hundred thousand people. Wei Lian's army couldn't stop it. Dugu Bo's poison would have salted the land for a century.

Xiao Zhan went himself.

He took Qian Renxue. Not because he needed her. Because she refused to let him go alone.

They fought it for six hours. He used Crown's Pressure until his nose bled. She used her Angel Domain until her skin cracked. At the end, he was holding the Blood Phoenix's beak shut with his bare hands, Rank 59 against Rank 95, and she was driving her holy sword through its heart.

It died. They lived.

They collapsed in a crater, covered in blood and ash. His long black hair was half-burned. Her white robes were red.

She looked at him. The mask was gone. He was exhausted, angry, alive. His red eyes reflected the moon.

"Qian Renxue," he said, "report."

"Casualties: under four hundred. All civilians evacuated by your Vassals. The Blood Phoenix's corpse is intact. Ning Fengzhi is already bidding on it." She paused. "You almost died."

"So did you."

"I know." She sat up. Her hands were shaking. Not from fear. "Xiao Zhan. I'm going to say something. If you use it against me, I'll kill you. If you laugh, I'll kill you. If you—"

"Speak," he said.

She looked away, then back. Pope of Spirit Hall. Angel God candidate. Terrified.

"I fell in love with you," she said. "The day you took the collar off. I kept it secret because I'm supposed to be above this. Because you look at the world like it's a board, and I didn't want to be a piece you moved. But I'm tired of secrets. So there. Kill me or use me or—"

He kissed her.

It wasn't planned. It wasn't tactical. It was six hours of dying, five months of her staring and not saying, eleven years of wearing a mask. His mouth was blood and ash and hers was the same.

When he pulled back, her eyes were wide. "You—"

"You're very beautiful," Xiao Zhan said. His voice was rough. "Like a born angel on earth."

He wasn't poetic. He'd never been poetic. But it was true.

"Is that a yes?" she whispered.

He touched her hair. Gold and red and black, all covered in dirt. "Yes."

He looked at her. She wasn't Marked. She never would be, not by force. But she was here, bloody, asking, waiting.

He held out his hand. The Monarch's Crown appeared above it, not as a weapon. As a ring.

"I can't Mark you," he said. "I won't. But I can bind you, if you want. Equal. Not owner. Partner."

Qian Renxue looked at the crown, then at him. At the very handsome young man with red eyes who had just admitted he wanted her.

She put her hand in his. "Yes."

The crown-ring slid onto her finger and vanished. She gasped. He felt it — her soul power, her Angel Domain, her twenty-four years of loneliness, all of it now humming alongside his own.

"Young King," she said, testing the words.

"Xiao Zhan," he corrected. "You're the only one who gets to use it."
