The wait for the lion cubs was interrupted not by birth, but by an encounter Euphoria had both dreaded and anticipated.
After weeks of high alert, life had settled into a deceptive routine. That evening, Luce was away hunting while Wayne stayed back to cook. Inside, Euphoria was resting on soft animal skins, drifting in that hazy space between wakefulness and sleep.
Suddenly, Wayne's voice shattered the silence, sharp and urgent. Euphoria's eyes snapped open. One look out the window made her blood run cold.
Three familiar figures stood in the courtyard. Even if she didn't know the third, the other two were etched into her memory: Kaia and Corey.
Kaia stood there with a twisted, triumphant smirk. Though Euphoria hadn't spoken of her missing snake cubs recently, the pain had never left her. Now, the woman responsible was standing on her doorstep. Without a word, Euphoria grabbed her bow and arrows, hid her dagger in her clothes, and stepped outside.
