Chapter 17
Seeing that Wayne was finally out of the woods, the adrenaline of the battle faded, replaced by a heavy exhaustion. After finishing her meal, Euphoria succumbed to a long, dreamless nap.
When she finally blinked her eyes open, the afternoon sun was already beginning to dip. Luce was still a motionless coil in the corner, and Wayne was nowhere to be seen. Taking advantage of the privacy, Euphoria quickly swapped her blood-stained clothes for a fresh set of animal skins. She had just finished when Wayne ducked back into the house, looking remarkably lively and carrying two large, glistening fish.
"Wayne, you shouldn't be getting those wounds wet yet," she scolded, though her frown was softened by relief.
Wayne gave her a brilliant, boyish grin. "Don't worry, I stayed in the shallows. I thought I'd make your favorite boiled fish fillets tonight. How does that sound?"
