Two days passed, and Euphoria began to feel a cautious sense of relief. Luce hadn't appeared to reclaim her.
She reasoned that perhaps he had simply given up. Their time together had been brief, and given his status, he surely had no shortage of suitors; maybe he had decided she wasn't worth the trouble after all.
However, she was oblivious to the singular, obsessive nature of the males in this world. Wayne had explained that once a male chose a mate, his devotion was absolute and lifelong. Conversely, a female could dissolve a partnership at any time, a move that resulted in the male being exiled. Stripped of their purpose and suffering a massive psychological blow, these rejected males often spiraled into self-destruction, eventually transforming into feral ghost beasts.
