Chapter 5 - FORBIDDEN DECISION

Kael remained still after the doors closed.

The warriors had left.

The elders' message still echoed in the air like a threat that refused to fade.

Execution protocol.

The words lingered inside the chamber, bouncing off the silver markings as if even the walls disapproved of them.

Lyra stood a few steps away from him, watching his back carefully.

He had not turned to her since the warriors left.

That alone unsettled her more than anything else.

Because Kael Draven did not hesitate.

He did not stall.

He did not linger in uncertainty.

But now… he was.

The silence between them stretched longer than it should have.

Lyra finally broke it.

"What happens now?" she asked quietly.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was controlled again—but tighter than before.

"They will come back."

Lyra frowned. "For me?"

Kael turned slightly.

Just enough to look at her.

"Yes."

That single word made her chest tighten.

She swallowed. "And you're going to let them?"

A pause.

Something shifted in his expression.

Not emotion.

Decision.

"No," he said.

Lyra blinked. "No?"

Kael stepped closer to her again, slowly.

This time, she didn't move back immediately.

She was learning him.

Learning the way his presence affected her body before her mind could catch up.

The chamber reacted softly again as he approached.

Not violently now.

Just… aware.

Lyra noticed it.

Kael stopped in front of her.

Too close again.

But not touching.

Never touching.

Yet.

His voice lowered.

"You are not leaving this chamber."

Lyra's eyes narrowed. "So I'm a prisoner."

Kael didn't deny it.

That silence again.

Lyra scoffed softly. "That's convenient for you."

His gaze sharpened slightly. "It is necessary."

"For who?"

A pause.

Kael's jaw tightened.

"For everyone."

Lyra shook her head slowly. "That sounds like an excuse people use when they're afraid of something they don't understand."

Kael's eyes flickered.

Just slightly.

Then he said, "I am not afraid of you."

Lyra studied him carefully.

"…You're not good at lying."

That made something shift in his expression again.

Not amusement.

Not anger.

Something more restrained.

Controlled.

"I am not lying," he said.

Lyra stepped closer this time, testing the distance between them deliberately.

The chamber reacted instantly.

A pulse rolled through the walls.

Kael noticed.

His gaze sharpened.

Lyra stopped just within the edge of that invisible pressure.

"And yet," she said softly, "my body reacts like I'm standing too close to a storm."

Kael didn't respond immediately.

Instead, his eyes moved over her face again.

Carefully.

Measured.

Like he was trying not to cross a line he had already crossed.

"You are unstable," he said again.

Lyra exhaled sharply. "You keep saying that like it explains everything."

"It explains enough."

"It explains nothing."

Silence.

The chamber hummed faintly between them.

Then Kael said something different.

Quieter.

More precise.

"You are not reacting like an Omega."

Lyra frowned. "Because I'm not weak?"

Kael's gaze hardened slightly.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

"Because your core is responding to dominance resonance."

Lyra blinked slowly. "Dominance what?"

Kael didn't look away.

"Alpha-level resonance," he said. "But amplified. Distorted."

Lyra's stomach tightened slightly. "I don't understand."

Kael stepped closer again.

This time, she felt it instantly.

Not just pressure.

Pull.

Her breath caught.

Kael noticed.

Of course he noticed.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Your wolf is not rejecting me," he said quietly.

Lyra's voice came out softer than intended. "Then what is it doing?"

Kael's gaze dropped briefly to her chest again.

Then returned to her eyes.

"It is responding."

Lyra went still.

"…Responding how?"

Kael hesitated.

Just once.

That hesitation was dangerous.

Then he said,

"As if it already knows me."

Silence hit the chamber harder than any sound.

Lyra felt her pulse spike instantly.

"That's not possible," she whispered.

Kael didn't disagree.

Instead, he lifted his hand slightly.

Lyra tensed immediately.

But he didn't touch her.

He stopped just short of it.

Like last time.

Like he was testing something.

The chamber reacted instantly.

Silver markings pulsed brighter.

Lyra's breath hitched.

Kael noticed the reaction again.

His expression shifted slightly.

Confirmation.

"You feel it," he said.

Lyra swallowed. "I feel something. I don't know what it is."

Kael lowered his hand slowly.

The pressure eased slightly.

But not fully.

Because his presence alone was enough.

Lyra exhaled carefully. "What are you doing to me?"

Kael's voice dropped slightly.

"I am not doing anything."

"That's not true," she said quickly.

His eyes flickered.

And then—

He stepped even closer.

This time, there was no hesitation.

Lyra's breath caught instantly.

The chamber reacted violently.

Light surged through the walls.

But Kael did not stop.

He leaned slightly closer—not touching her, but invading every inch of her personal space.

Lyra should have stepped back.

She didn't.

Her body refused.

Her wolf reacted instead.

Not fear.

Not panic.

Recognition again.

Stronger.

Kael watched her carefully.

Then whispered,

"There."

Lyra's voice barely came out. "There what?"

Kael's gaze sharpened.

"That reaction," he said. "It is not random."

Lyra's throat tightened. "Stop analyzing me like I'm a weapon."

Kael didn't respond immediately.

Then he said something that changed the air completely.

"You are not a weapon."

Lyra blinked.

Kael's voice lowered further.

"You are a key."

Silence.

Lyra stared at him. "A key to what?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked away for the first time since the conversation began.

Not in avoidance.

In calculation.

Then he said quietly,

"To something that should never wake up again."

A cold ripple moved through the chamber.

The markings dimmed slightly—as if reacting to the idea alone.

Lyra felt her stomach tighten.

"What does that mean?" she asked.

Kael didn't answer right away.

Then—

Footsteps again.

Outside.

Closer this time.

Urgent.

Multiple.

Kael's entire posture changed instantly.

The distance between them broke as he turned sharply toward the entrance.

Lyra blinked, slightly disoriented by how quickly the moment shifted.

"What now?" she asked quickly.

Kael's voice dropped.

"They are not waiting anymore."

The doors slammed open.

This time, it was not warriors.

It was elders.

Three of them.

Old.

Powerful.

Their eyes locked onto Lyra instantly.

And she felt it immediately.

Judgment.

Finality.

One of them spoke coldly.

"Alpha Kael Draven."

Kael didn't move.

The elder continued.

"You are ordered to surrender the unstable subject for immediate execution."

Lyra's blood ran cold.

Execution.

Again.

But Kael didn't respond.

Not immediately.

Instead, he looked at Lyra.

Just her.

And for the first time since this began…

Something in his expression shifted.

Not doubt.

Not confusion.

Decision.

Lyra's voice lowered slightly. "Kael…"

He raised a hand slightly.

Silencing her.

Then he turned to the elders.

And said one sentence that shattered the entire chamber.

"No."

Silence.

The elders stiffened.

Lyra froze.

Kael continued, voice colder now.

"She is under my protection."

One elder stepped forward. "You do not have authority—"

Kael's eyes darkened.

"I am the future Alpha King."

That stopped them.

The chamber seemed to tighten around that declaration.

Lyra stared at him.

Future Alpha King.

He had never said it before.

Not to her.

Not like that.

The elder's voice sharpened. "Then you will be stripped of rank if you defy council law."

Kael didn't flinch.

Instead, he turned slightly.

And looked at Lyra again.

Only Lyra.

Then he said something quieter.

But far more dangerous.

"Then strip it."

Silence exploded through the chamber.

Lyra's breath caught sharply.

The elders froze.

Even the markings on the wall seemed to still.

Kael stepped closer to Lyra again.

This time, not testing.

Not studying.

Deciding.

He stopped just in front of her.

His voice dropped.

Barely audible.

"I will not let them kill you."

Lyra's heart pounded violently. "Why?"

Kael's gaze held hers.

And for the first time—

He didn't hide the answer.

"Because when you are near me…"

A pause.

His voice softened just slightly.

"…my wolf stops fighting me."

Silence.

Then chaos erupted outside the chamber as alarms began to sound across the pack grounds.

But inside—

Lyra could only hear one thing.

Her own heartbeat.

And the terrifying realization that whatever she was becoming…

Kael was already part of it.
