Chapter 4 - HE CANNOT LET GO

Kael did not let go of her hand.

Even when the chamber trembled again.

Even when the silver markings on the walls flared violently like living fire.

Even when every instinct in him screamed that touching her was a mistake that could not be undone.

He still held her.

Lyra felt it too.

The moment was wrong.

Too still. Too sharp. Too aware.

His hand around hers was firm—controlled—but there was something beneath that control that she could not name.

Not weakness.

Not hesitation.

Something far more dangerous.

Reaction.

Her pulse stuttered.

The air between them felt too small suddenly, like the chamber itself had forgotten how to breathe.

Lyra tried to pull her hand back.

Kael tightened his grip slightly without thinking.

That small reaction made both of them freeze.

His eyes narrowed immediately.

Then he released her.

Too fast.

Too controlled.

Like he had touched fire and refused to admit it burned him.

Lyra stepped back instantly, pressing her hand against her chest again.

Her heartbeat was uneven.

Not from fear.

From him.

That realization made her uncomfortable in a way she didn't understand yet.

Kael turned slightly away from her, as if putting distance physically would fix whatever had just happened between them.

It didn't.

The chamber still hummed.

The markings still glowed.

And whatever had awakened inside her… was still awake.

"You need to be restrained," Kael said suddenly.

Lyra blinked. "Excuse me?"

His voice was steady again. Too steady. "Until we understand what you are."

"I'm not an animal," she snapped immediately.

Kael turned back to her.

His gaze was sharper now.

"You nearly destroyed a containment chamber built to hold Alpha-level threats."

"I didn't ask for this!"

"No one does," he replied coldly.

That sentence landed heavier than she expected.

Lyra hesitated for half a second.

Then she straightened. "Then fix it. Whatever is happening to me—fix it."

A pause.

Kael studied her again.

Longer this time.

Not like before.

Now it felt like he was searching for something inside her.

Something hidden.

Something buried.

"You think it can be fixed?" he asked quietly.

Lyra frowned. "Everything can be fixed."

Something flickered in his eyes.

Not agreement.

Not disagreement.

Something closer to doubt.

"You are wrong," he said.

The chamber lights pulsed again as if reacting to his voice.

Lyra noticed it this time.

It responded to him too.

She wasn't imagining it.

Her voice lowered. "Why does this place react when we talk?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the wall.

Lyra watched him carefully.

He stopped near the glowing markings.

Raised a hand.

Did not touch them.

He never touched them.

But they still responded.

The silver symbols shifted slightly, as if acknowledging his presence but not obeying him.

Kael's jaw tightened.

Lyra took a cautious step forward. "You know what this is."

Kael didn't look at her. "Yes."

"Then tell me."

Silence.

Too long.

Finally, he spoke.

"This chamber was built during the First Pack Era."

Lyra frowned. "I don't know what that means."

"It means," he said quietly, "it predates all current Alpha bloodlines."

That made her pause.

"…That's impossible."

"Yet here we are," Kael replied.

Lyra looked around again, more carefully this time.

The symbols weren't just glowing.

They were moving.

Barely.

Like something alive beneath stone skin.

Her throat tightened slightly. "Why am I here then?"

Kael turned back to her slowly.

That gaze again.

Focused.

Heavy.

Controlled.

"Because you triggered it."

"I didn't trigger anything."

Kael stepped closer again.

Lyra immediately felt that pressure return in her chest.

Her breath caught.

He noticed.

Of course he noticed.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"…It responds to proximity," he said again, quieter this time.

Lyra took a step back to break the sensation.

It helped.

Barely.

"What kind of proximity?" she asked cautiously.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Then he said something that made her stomach tighten.

"Bond resonance."

Silence dropped.

Lyra blinked slowly. "That doesn't make sense. My bond was rejected."

Kael's expression darkened slightly.

"Yes."

"So how can there still be—"

She stopped mid-sentence.

Because she understood something too quickly.

Too sharply.

Her voice dropped. "You're not talking about him."

Kael didn't confirm.

But he didn't deny it either.

That silence was answer enough.

Lyra felt her chest tighten.

"…You mean you."

Kael's eyes flickered.

Just once.

But it was enough.

Lyra shook her head immediately. "No. That's impossible. We're not bonded."

Kael's voice was lower now. "Not yet."

The word hit harder than she expected.

Lyra stepped forward without thinking. "Not yet? What does that even mean?"

Kael didn't move away this time.

He let her come closer.

That alone should have alarmed her more.

Instead, she stopped just in front of him.

Close enough to feel his presence again.

The chamber reacted instantly.

A pulse of light rippled through the walls.

Kael noticed.

His gaze dropped briefly to her lips.

Then back to her eyes.

That pause lasted only a second.

But it changed the air completely.

Lyra swallowed.

"Why does it feel like this when you're near me?" she asked quietly.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

For once, his control seemed slightly… delayed.

Then he said, "It shouldn't."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you have."

Lyra frowned. "That doesn't help me."

Kael's eyes held hers longer now.

Too long again.

Then he said something quieter.

More honest than anything he had said so far.

"It's affecting me too."

Silence.

That was new.

Lyra blinked. "What?"

Kael's jaw tightened slightly, like he regretted saying it immediately.

But he didn't take it back.

"It should not be possible," he continued. "But when you are near… my wolf reacts."

Lyra's breath caught slightly.

"…Your wolf?"

Kael nodded once.

Lyra stared at him.

"That's not normal," she whispered.

"I am aware."

A pause.

Then Lyra asked the question she didn't fully want answered.

"How does it react?"

Kael didn't respond immediately.

The chamber hummed louder.

The symbols pulsed.

And then—

He stepped slightly closer.

Not enough to touch her.

But enough that she felt it instantly.

That pressure again.

Stronger now.

Lyra inhaled sharply without meaning to.

Kael watched her reaction carefully.

Then said quietly,

"Like it recognizes you."

Lyra froze.

"That's impossible," she repeated again, but her voice was weaker now.

Kael didn't move away.

Neither did she.

The silence between them stretched.

Thick.

Alive.

Then suddenly—

A loud sound echoed from outside the chamber.

Metal doors unlocking.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Urgent.

Kael's entire posture changed instantly.

Cold returned.

Control snapped back into place.

The moment broke.

Lyra blinked, slightly disoriented.

"What is that?" she asked quickly.

Kael turned toward the entrance.

His voice dropped.

"Trouble."

The doors opened violently.

Three warriors rushed in.

One of them spoke immediately.

"Alpha Kael—she's not stable. The readings are increasing. The pack elders are demanding execution protocol."

Silence.

Lyra went still.

"…Execution?" she repeated slowly.

Kael didn't turn to look at her yet.

But his voice cut through the chamber.

"No."

One word.

Sharp.

Final.

The warriors froze.

Lyra stared at him.

Kael finally turned slightly.

Just enough for her to see his expression again.

It was not soft.

It was not kind.

It was something far more dangerous.

Possession.

"She is not to be touched," Kael said.

A pause.

Then he added, quieter,

"Not until I understand what she is."

Lyra's heart stuttered slightly at the wording.

One of the warriors hesitated. "Alpha, the elders—"

"I said no."

The air went still again.

Even the chamber seemed to pause.

Lyra looked at Kael carefully now.

"…Why are you protecting me?" she asked quietly.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

The silence stretched again.

Then he said something that made her chest tighten unexpectedly.

"Because if they kill you now…"

A pause.

His eyes met hers.

"…I lose my answer."

Lyra didn't fully understand that.

But her body reacted anyway.

The chamber pulsed.

Louder.

Stronger.

And somewhere deep inside her—

Something inside her answered Kael's presence again.

Not loudly this time.

Not violently.

But softly.

Like it was listening.

Like it was waiting.

And for the first time—

Lyra realized something terrifying.

It wasn't just awakening.

It was learning his voice.
