"RUN!"
The ground split under my feet. I grabbed Elise and shoved her away from the crack just as another section of dirt dropped.
"Rhys!"
"Get back!"
The whole fucking parcel shook.
I went down on one hand as pain ripped through my chest. Not the usual pain from trying to shift. This was deeper. Something inside me was pulling so hard I couldn't breathe.
Elise grabbed my arm. "I'm not leaving you."
"I'm not asking you to leave. I'm asking you to get the fuck away from the hole opening under us."
Another crack tore across the ground, and that convinced her. She backed toward the trees but didn't go far.
"Rhys!"
"I know!"
I didn't know shit.
The light under the ground had gotten brighter. It wasn't moonlight. Wasn't fire either. It came straight through the cracks in pale lines that spread across the parcel.
Then the ground dropped.
I threw an arm over my face, and something exploded upward, dirt and smoke. Then followed a sound that went straight through me. A howl.
