"What happened?"
Rhys stopped halfway across the hall.
"Nothing."
"Bullshit."
He looked at me.
I hadn't meant to say that, but I was tired too.
He looked worse than he had an hour ago. His hair was a mess, his shirt sleeves were pushed up, and there was a folded piece of paper crushed in one fist.
"What happened?" I asked again.
"I said nothing."
"And I said bullshit."
"Elise."
"No. You don't get to walk around looking like somebody just told you the world is ending and then tell me nothing happened."
He glanced toward the stairs. "I don't want to do this here."
"Good. Neither do I."
I walked into my office and left the door open. For a second, I thought he might keep going. Then I heard him behind me and shut the door.
He stared at me. "You're very bossy tonight."
"I've had a bad week."
"So have I."
Rhys looked away. "This isn't about us."
"Then what is it about?"
He tossed the folded paper onto my desk.
