Chapter 19 - Field Trips

The next day when Maya awoke it was curled up in Jasper's bed with him next to her. She was about to snuggle in and enjoy the happiness that came with waking up in his arms when Alice waltzed into his room.

"Good morning! Time to get dressed for school!" she chirped as she walked straight into Jasper's closet.

Maya let out a groan, "is she always this cheerful in the morning?"

"Pretty much" he said with a chuckle.

Alice danced back out with two outfits in her hands, "you're lucky that you have clothes here Maya! Now get dressed, we have a field trip today."

Maya let out another groan as Alice skipped from the room and tried to hide in the blankets. Jasper smiled down at her, shaking his head in amusement before getting up to begin getting ready. Maya laying there for a few extra minutes as she worked up the energy to leave the bed before following him.

Jasper finished first and moved to the desk to pack their bags, not bothering to bring much as the field trip was going to take up most of the day. He turned around when he heard Maya come out of the bathroom and couldn't stop the smirk from rising to his face.

"What?" she questioned, making her way over to him.

"Nothing Darlin', I just love the look of you in my clothes." He allowed his eyes to roam over her, taking in the way his hoodie reached almost midthigh on her and the sleeves hung past her hands. He loved it when she wore his clothes, not only because it marked her as his to the boys at school, but because she was the one that chose to wear it.

"Well, that's good. Cause I love wearing them. There's has to be something magical about your hoodies because all of them are so damn comfy." She raised her arms to inspect it, as if the answer as to why they were would suddenly appear.

He just laughed and picked up both their bags, "come on, lets get you fed before we have to go." She smiled at that and happily followed him downstairs to the kitchen.

They found Esme already there, plating up a large helping of French toast, eggs, and bacon. "Oh, perfect timing. I just finished cooking everything and was about to call you."

"You really don't have to do this every time I stay over you know. I mean cereal is a decent breakfast" Maya said as she sat down.

"Nonsense. I love cooking and you give me an excuse to do it."

Maya laughed at that as she took her first bite, moaning as she did. "Esme you are a true goddess, a being beyond this world and if only you would let me, I would marry you right now."

Esme giggled at this and they could hear others laughing from various rooms in the house as Jasper rolled his eyes. Perhaps I should learn to cook he thought, not for the first time, it might be nice to see her moaning and drooling over something I made her.

"Trying to steal my wife away from me again?" Carlisle asked as he came into the room then, moving to give Esme a kiss on the cheek as he did.

"Pssh What would make you think that?" Maya said around her mouthful of eggs.

"Because you try to every time she feeds you" Carlisle reminded her with a smile.

"Hm, good point. But it is not my fault that your wife is an amazing chef" she claimed in defence, once again causing laughter to break out.

As Maya got up to deal with her dishes, something she insisted on doing given that they cooked for her, Esme handed her a lunch.

"You really are too good for this world. You do know that right?" Maya accepted the lunch and turned to place it in her bag.

Esme laughed again, "no I just like looking after my children. Now off to school with you lot before you're late."

Maya groaned at that as Jasper led her outside and over to his truck. They had a peaceful drive to school and Maya was almost dozing off as they pulled into the parking lot.

"You alright Darlin'?"

"Yeah, just tired," Maya said with yawn.

"Strange I thought you slept well last night. You're not coming down with something are you?" he asked in concern, wondering if he should just take her home.

"No, shifters don't get sick. I think its just all the excitement and stress of yesterday taking its toll. I'll just sleep on the bus and then I should be good" she reassured him as she waved off his concerns.

They slowly made their way out of the truck to join up with Alice and Edward who would be going with them on the field trip, Maya leaning against Jasper.

"You okay Maya?" Alice questioned as they got closer.

"Yep, just tired."

"Mm Hm Jasper keeping you up all night," Alice teased, wiggling her eyebrows.

Maya giggled at that while Jasper rolled his eyes. "No Alice, I was not keeping her up."

"Oh you poor deprived thing! Does Jasper not have what it takes to please you?"

Maya laughed outright at that and the sour look on Jasper's face. "Bold words coming from someone who is currently single. And Jasper goes far beyond simply pleasing me."

"Well, that's good to hear. I would hate to discover that my dear brother is lacking. I'm counting on him to lure you into our family you know." Alice gave her a wink. "And as for my single status, it won't be for much longer, just another year or so from what I can tell."

"Really?! That's amazing! I'm so happy you'll be meeting them soon!" Maya pulled her into a hug an excited hug that Alice gladly returned. Now that she had found Jasper and discovered just how amazing it felt to have a mate, she was beyond thrilled to hear that Alice would soon be meeting hers.

The three continued to chat as Edward ignored them, staring at Bella, until the teacher called for them to board the bus. When they got on, Edward settled at the very back while Alice sat next to him. Jasper and Maya across from them. As the bus pulled out, Maya curled up on Jasper's lap to sleep. He spent the whole ride gently stroking her back as she dozed, while he chatted quietly with Alice and Edward looked out the window, once again ignoring them all.

When they arrived, Jasper gently shook Maya awake and all four exited the bus. They entered the greenhouse as a group, Jasper with his arm around Maya, Alice walking backwards so she could face them as they talked and Edward trailing behind them.

Not long after they entered however, Edward had broken off to go talk to Bella, which caused them all to groan and roll their eyes.

"One day. He literally couldn't even go one day without breaking his promise to the family." Alice muttered sadly.

"It's because he is stuck as an eternal teen and we are therefore doomed to suffer through his rebellious stage for alllll eternity" Maya said, making the other two laugh.

"Well, in any case, we can just ignore him and Bella," Jasper said, handing Maya a flower. "There is no point in us worrying about them when there is nothing we can do about it."

"True. And hey, perhaps she's not that bad once we get to know her! Maybe she will stop asking questions and all will be fine, just like with Charlie!" Alice clapped her hands in excitement, choosing to look on the brightside.

Maya and Jasper shared a glance at that, but chose not to say anything. Instead, they brought the conversation back to their original topic of a trip they could take that summer, ignoring Edward and Bella completely.

They managed to do this until they were heading back to the buses. Edward and Bella were standing in front of the bus doors arguing. Alice skipped forward ahead of them then, Maya staying back with Jasper, as Alice asked Bella if she would be joining them on their bus. Her attempt to be friendly failed however as Edward rather rudely declared that their bus was full before storming onto it.

The bus ride home was a little more tense than the one there due to the fact that Edward was angry and tense the whole way back. They tried to draw him out of his mood by including him in their conversation, but after he practically bit Alice's head off, they left him alone. By the time the bus pulled up at the school, Maya was wondering why they hadn't just left him at the greenhouse and spared themselves the trouble of dealing with him and his sour mood.
