"You think I'm trying to kennel you? I was trying to protect you! I was in that meeting securing a future so you wouldn't have to go back to the shacks. I was going to appoint you a personal maid tomorrow. I was going to register you for the Luna Training School so you could have a life that didn't involve running from enforcers! I was fixing everything!"
"Then why didn't you tell me?" she cried, pushing against my chest. "You just order me around and expect me to trust you blindly! How can I trust a man who treats me like a secret he's ashamed of?"
The word ashamed hit me like a physical blow. I wasn't ashamed of her. I was terrified of what she did to me. I was terrified that for the first time in my life, I had a weakness that Lynn or Julian could exploit.
