The waiting area had gone strangely quiet. Loretta studied Lucas for a moment before giving him a polite, almost innocent smile.
"Do you have an opening in the branch office you're managing?" she asked. "Is that why you want to employ me?"
For a second, Lucas simply stared at her.
Then he chuckled. It was a quiet laugh, but there was nothing particularly amusing about his expression.
"You really are interesting."
Loretta frowned slightly.
Lucas took another step closer, lowering his voice. "You've been part of this family for barely a few days." His eyes swept over her calmly. "And yet, in that short time, you've managed to survive things that would have killed most people."
Loretta's expression changed slightly.
Lucas noticed. He smiled faintly. "Don't look so surprised. The Goodman family isn't exactly known for keeping secrets from people who know where to look."
Loretta remained silent.
