The mansion was quiet when Kevin returned. He handed his coat to Mr. Harris before walking toward the elevator.
"Where is she?" he asked casually.
Mr. Harris bowed slightly. "Madam finished dinner not long ago. Mrs. Lydia showed her around the ground floor before she retired to her room." Although Kevin had not mentioned a name, Mr. Harris knew he was asking about Loretta.
Kevin gave a slight nod. The elevator doors closed. A few moments later, they opened onto the third floor. Kevin stepped into the corridor and instinctively headed toward his room.
Just as his hand reached the doorknob, he paused. Today was still their wedding night. Although the marriage had only been on a whim, he supposed he should at least make sure she had settled in properly.
After a brief hesitation, he turned and walked to the room next door. The door was not locked.
He knocked once before pushing it open, but the bedroom was empty.
