Chapter 9 - The doppelgänger

Lena took a shaky breath, the city lights a welcome respite from the darkness. Elian's grip on her arm loosened, but his eyes still burned with intensity.

As they stumbled away from the wreckage, Lena's phone buzzed . A message from an unknown number: "It's not over."

Elian's eyes narrowed. "We need to get you safe," he said, his voice firm.

But Lena's mind was racing. What did the message mean? Had they really stopped the entity?

Suddenly, the city lights flickered , plunging them into darkness. The air seemed to ripple, like the surface of a pond disturbed by a stone.

A figure emerged from the shadows – the doppelganger , its eyes glowing red .

"It's not over," it whispered, its voice like Lena's own.

The doppelganger's words hung in the air, echoing with a chilling familiarity. Lena's heart was racing, her mind struggling to process what was happening.

Elian stepped forward, his body tense. "You're not real," he growled, his voice firm.

The doppelganger tilted its head, its eyes gleaming with a malevolent light. "I'm more real than she is," it whispered, its voice dripping with malice. "I'm the one who's been watching, waiting, and planning."

Lena's skin crawled as the doppelganger took a step closer. "What do you want?" she demanded, trying to keep her voice steady.

The doppelganger's smile was a twisted parody of her own. "I want to live," it said, its voice low and urgent. "And I will. Through you."

The air seemed to ripple again, and Lena felt a strange, creeping sense of disorientation. It was as if the world was shifting, rearranging itself around her.

Elian's voice was a distant shout, "Lena, no!"

Lena's vision blurred, and she felt herself splitting – like she was being torn in two . The doppelganger's face contorted, merging with hers . She saw flashes of memories that weren't hers , saw lives she'd never lived , saw a universe where she was never born .

Elian's shout was distant, muffled . Lena's mind shattered into a million pieces , and she saw...

...the truth : she was the doppelganger . She was the copy , created by an entity to infiltrate reality . The "real" Lena was a fiction 🕷️ – a cover story to keep her from remembering .

The world around her reassembled like shattered glass , but everything was different . Elian was gone , the city was gone , and she was... what?

A voice whispered in her mind : "Now you're real ."

The revelation hung in the void, echoing through her fragmented mind. She was the doppelganger, a copy, a simulation. The thought was a scream trapped in her skull.

As the silence stretched, the voice whispered again, "Now you're real."

She felt herself solidifying, taking shape in a world that felt alien. Memories began to surface, fragments of a life she'd never lived. She was Lena, but also not Lena.

A cityscape coalesced around her, buildings rising like skeletal fingers. The air was thick with an otherworldly energy. She saw people – they looked like humans – moving in slow motion, their eyes black as coal.

One figure approached her, its face stretching into a grotesque smile. "Welcome, Lena," it said, its voice like a sigh from the grave.

She tried to speak, but her voice was gone. The figure handed her a small, ornate box. "Your next move," it whispered.

The box opened with a tiny click, revealing a mirror inside. She saw reflections within reflections, stretching into infinity.
