Chapter 1 - The Sudden Crash and Unspoken Sparks

The bustling, sterile white corridors of the International Daehan University Hospital were alive with the usual chaotic hum of moving nurses, rolling stretchers, and the distant, constant rhythmic beep of medical monitors. Inside the orthopedic ward, however, the atmosphere was thick with a much more familiar, familial kind of noise.Kim Seo-ah stood by the edge of the hospital bed, her arms crossed tightly over her chest as she glared down at the stubborn man sitting amidst the white sheets."I told you not to ride that bike!" Seo-ah's voice cut through the room, sharp and filled with a sister's raw frustration. "So why on earth did you come all the way from Gongjin to Seoul on a motorcycle anyway? Look at you now!"Her brother, Kim Do-jung—universally called Junu by everyone who knew him—let out a heavy, thoroughly annoyed sigh. His leg was heavily strapped up following a recent motorcycle accident, but his spirit was clearly unbroken. He rubbed his temples, adjusting himself against the stiff pillows."Just be quiet for a second, will you?" Junu muttered back, waving a dismissive hand in the air. "You've been lecturing me non-stop since the moment you walked through that door. I am your older brother—not the other way around—yet you manage to lecture me at every single opportunity you get!"Seo-ah rolled her eyes, letting out a sharp scoff. "Yeah, yeah, but you're only two years older than me, Junu! Forget it; I don't even want to waste my breath talking to you anymore. It's not like you ever listen to a single word I say anyway. I have to get to the office now. I've already had to take way too many days off from work because of your reckless stunt. Honestly, you should be saying a massive thank you to me—I went out of my way and finished all of your pending paperwork!"Junu's defensive posture melted just a fraction, a small, sheepish grin touching his lips as he looked at his younger sister. "Alright, alright. Thanks for looking after my café while I've been stuck in this bed. You can go now.""Yeah, I'm going," Seo-ah replied, her tone softening into a warm, gentle murmur. She patted the edge of the mattress. "Take care of yourself properly. Bye!""Yeah, go on. I'm fine," Junu waved her off, watching her turn on her heel toward the exit.Seo-ah stepped past the heavy wooden door of the ward, immediately entering the chaotic hustle and bustle of the main hospital hallway. Visitors were rushing past, and white-coated medical staff were marching aggressively to handle their shifts. She took a deep breath, completely focused on reaching the elevator lobby so she wouldn't be late for her corporate deadlines. But destiny had a completely different, sudden plan for her morning. From the opposite end of the long corridor, a young, strikingly handsome doctor—Choi Hyun-woo—came running down the hallway at full speed, his medical coat flying behind him as he rushed to handle an emergency. He rounded the sharp corner blindly, completely unable to check his momentum before his broad chest crashed directly and forcefully right into Kim Seo-ah.The impact sent a sharp jolt through them both. Seo-ah stumbled a step backward, gasping in surprise as she clutched her shoulder bag."Sorry! I'm so incredibly sorry!" Hyun-woo blurted out frantically, reaching out a steady hand to stabilize her balance. But the moment his hand brushed her arm, and his eyes locked onto her face, the words died completely in his throat. The chaotic hum of the hospital corridor seemed to vanish into an absolute, breathless silence. Time stood entirely still. Hyun-woo kept on staring down at her, his dark eyes gazing into hers with a sudden, radiant, and incredibly intense sparkle. It was as if he had just witnessed a miracle.Without a single second of hesitation, driven by an overwhelming emotion he had kept locked inside for years, Hyun-woo spoke the words directly out loud."I love you."Seo-ah's jaw dropped. She stood frozen like an absolute statue, her mind completely exploding with paralyzing shock. She blinked once, twice, thoroughly bewildered by the handsome stranger standing in front of her. "Huh? What? What on earth did you just say? Hey—say something!"Hyun-woo didn't blink. His expression remained profoundly serious, filled with a deep, unyielding sincerity. "Yes, I'm telling the absolute truth. I love you."For a long, quiet second, Seo-ah just stared at him. Then, a sudden bubble of laughter burst from her lips. "Yeah, right! Ha ha ha! Hey, Doctor, we literally just met! We haven't even exchanged names, and you've already fallen in love with me out of nowhere? Cut the nonsense and step aside—I have an office to get to."Without waiting for a response, she smoothly stepped around his broad frame and walked away down the corridor, her high heels clicking firmly against the polished floor tiles.Hyun-woo spun around sharply, watching her retreating figure move further away from him. "Wait!" he called out down the hall, his voice echoing slightly. "At least give me a proper answer before you go!"Seo-ah stopped in her tracks, turning her head around just enough to glare at him over her sharp shoulder. A look of complete disbelief crossed her features. "Has this guy completely lost his mind?" she muttered to herself under her breath, turning back and swiftly walking away until she vanished past the glass sliding doors of the hospital lobby.Hyun-woo stood alone in the middle of the corridor, a soft, incredibly warm, and knowing smile breaking across his handsome face. He watched the empty space where she had just been standing, a soft sigh escaping his lips."Hah..." he murmured to himself, his eyes glowing with memories of the past. "You may have completely forgotten me... but I haven't forgotten you for a single day. Today, I finally managed to say it out loud."A short while later, across the city, the heavy wooden door of a cozy, sunlit apartment flew open.Kim Seo-ah walked straight inside the entrance lobby, taking off her office heels with a sharp kick and stepping into her comfortable slippers. "I'm home!" she called out into the quiet space, dumping her bag onto the entryway console. She walked into the main living room, still shaking her head in utter bewilderment as she muttered aggressively under her breath. "That doctor... he is completely, entirely crazy. Who just stands in a public hospital hallway and says things like that out of the blue to a complete stranger?"Ma Ha-rin—her close friend and roommate—looked up from where she was organizing some papers near the kitchen counter. Hearing the commotion, she raised a curious eyebrow. "Yes, Kim Seo-ah? What are you grumbling about?"Seo-ah marched straight over to the large plush sofa, collapsing heavily onto the cushions with a deep sigh. "Do you have any idea what happened to me today, Ha-rin? It was an absolute disaster."Ha-rin walked over, a small smirk playing on her lips. "Well, I'll only know if you actually tell me! What on earth were you muttering about like a mad person when you walked through the door?"Seo-ah patted the empty cushion directly beside her, gesturing aggressively for her roommate to join her. "First, sit down right here. Now listen carefully. You know I went to the International University Hospital today to visit Junu and check on his leg cast, right? Well, on my way out of the ward, this doctor comes running down the hall, bumps right into me—and then he looks me dead in the eye and tells me he loves me!"Ha-rin's eyes went completely wide. She gasped loudly, leaning forward. "What?! Wow! Are you serious?!""Hey! What is so 'wow' about that?!" Seo-ah scolded her, throwing her hands up in the air. "It's not romantic at all, it's totally weird and creepy! Who does that?"Ha-rin tilted her head, a thoughtful expression crossing her face as she processed the bizarre incident. "I don't know... I get the strong feeling that he already knows you from somewhere. A doctor wouldn't just throw his entire career reputation on the line to confess to a stranger."Seo-ah shook her head stubbornly. "But I've never actually met him before in my entire life! I would definitely remember a face like that.""Maybe you just didn't notice him," Ha-rin reasoned, leaning back against the sofa. "You must have seen him visiting Junu at the hospital while you were handling the admission papers over the past week.""But I've never actually seen him at the hospital ward before today," Seo-ah countered, dismissively waving her hand to drop the matter. "Let it go. It's just a strange urban coincidence. Let's drop it.""Yeah, let's just drop it," Ha-rin agreed with a soft chuckle. "Besides, you don't even know his name or what department he belongs to. It's a dead end."Seo-ah suddenly checked the wall clock, her eyes widening as she bolted upright from the sofa. "Oh no, look at the time! We need to get to the office immediately anyway. By the way, what's been going on at the corporate headquarters while I've been away looking after Junu?"The moment the word 'office' left Seo-ah's mouth, Ha-rin's cheerful expression completely vanished. She let out a heavy, miserable groan, wrinkling her forehead as she made a thoroughly sour face. "Ugh..."Seo-ah wrinkled her brow in deep concern, looking at her roommate's dramatic shift in energy. "What? What happened? Why are you making that face?""The company's real main CEO is finally back from his overseas expansion trip," Ha-rin explained, rolling her eyes in sheer frustration. "And thank god, that gluttonous, useless former interim CEO—Goo Kyung-min—is completely gone from the executive floor."Seo-ah blinked, thoroughly puzzled. "What? Isn't that an incredibly good thing for our department? Kyung-min was literally eating all our project budgets!""Yeah, that part is great," Ha-rin whined, crossing her arms defensively. "But the real returning CEO—Choi Sun-woo—he treats every single person in the architecture department with absolute grace and respect... except for me! For some bizarre reason, he piles a mountain of heavy work on my desk every single morning! He's running me ragged!"Seo-ah couldn't control herself. A loud, joyful laugh burst from her lips as she watched Ha-rin's dramatic pouting."Don't laugh!" Ha-rin barked back, her face turning pink. "There is absolutely nothing funny about this corporate torment, Kim Seo-ah!""Yeah, yeah... I'm sorry," Seo-ah apologized, wiping a tear of laughter from her eye as she stood up to grab her car keys. "Maybe it just feels that way to you because he's strict about deadlines. Come on, we really should get to the office floor right now before we get penalized."Ha-rin grabbed her designer handbag, marching toward the door with a determined, vindictive glint in her eyes. "Just you wait until we get to the department today. You'll see exactly what kind of a rude, strict monster he is.""Yeah, yeah, let's go," Seo-ah smiled, opening the front door as they stepped out into the bright Seoul afternoon.Inside the sleek, modern glass headquarters of Hanseong Architecture, the atmosphere was pristine and buzzing with corporate energy. The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, and Choi Sun-woo stepped onto the main executive office floor. He was dressed immaculately in a sharp, tailored dark charcoal business suit, his posture radiating absolute authority and calm executive power. The second his feet touched the floor, rows of employees immediately stood up from their desks, bowing politely in perfect unison."Welcome back, Sir!" the department employees chorused respectfully.Sun-woo offered a brief, warm nod of acknowledgement, his expression perfectly composed. "Yes, please take your seats and continue with your project tasks."He marched down the center aisle, his long strides carrying him straight into his private glass cabin. He shut the door smoothly behind him, threw his leather briefcase onto the pristine wooden desk, and settled back into his grand executive leather chair. He loosened his tie just a fraction, a look of mild irritation crossing his face as he stared down at his personal mobile phone sitting on the desk."Why on earth didn't he call me yet?" Sun-woo muttered to himself, shaking his head. "Forget it, I'll just call the brat myself."He picked up the device, tapped the screen rapidly, and placed a direct call. The line rang for a few seconds before a familiar, cheerful voice answered on the other end, accompanied by the faint, clinical background beep of a hospital unit."Hello? Yeah, what's up, bro?" Dr. Hyun-woo's voice came through the speaker.Sun-woo leaned back in his chair, a strict, older-brother tone filtering into his voice. "You didn't call me after your morning shift ended, so I decided to take the initiative and call you myself. Did you handle that matter?"On the other end of the line, Hyun-woo let out a nervous, slightly breathless laugh, rubbing the back of his neck as he stood in the hospital break room. "Oh, right... well, I actually saw her in the hallway today. And... I explicitly told her that I loved her."Sun-woo's executive composure completely cracked. He bolted upright in his chair, his eyes widening in total, paralyzing shock as he barked into the phone receiver. "WHAT?! Are you completely crazy, Hyun-woo?! What on earth was the rush? You haven't even re-introduced yourself properly yet! What must she be thinking about you right now? By the way, what did she actually say to your face?"Hyun-woo let out a sheepish groan, leaning against the hospital counter. "Well... she was completely shocked, obviously... and she explicitly called me crazy, too. Then she just walked away."Sun-woo let out a sharp, cynical scoff, a small smirk returning to his lips. "Well, she definitely wasn't wrong about that! You act completely reckless when it comes to her."Right at that exact microsecond, the front glass sliding doors of the main architecture office floor opened with a soft beep. Sun-woo's sharp eyes darted through the glass blinds of his cabin, locking straight onto the entrance. Kim Seo-ah and Ma Ha-rin walked onto the floor together, carrying their files and walking toward their respective desks.Seeing the two girls arrive, Sun-woo's voice instantly dropped into a low, serious, and rapid executive whisper as he held the phone tightly to his ear."Alright, I'm hanging up the line right now, Hyun. Kim Seo-ah and Ma Ha-rin just walked onto the office floor. We will discuss this entire relationship mess later tonight at home.""Got it, Mr. CEO," Hyun-woo replied cheerfully on the other end, flashing a handsome smile. "Have a great day at the office. Bye-bye!"Sun-woo disconnected the call, sliding his phone smoothly into his suit jacket pocket. His stern, intense eyes remained fixed through the blinds, locking onto Ma Ha-rin's face as she sat down at her desk across the room, completely unaware of the massive family empire that was about to trap them all.
