Madison wasn't smiling.
Which was rare.
She sat at the back of the classroom, her fingers tapping slowly on her desk, her eyes fixed on one person.
Lia Thompson.
The way Lia laughed softly with her friend.
The way she tucked her hair behind her ear.
The way Ethan looked at her when he thought no one was watching.
Madison's jaw tightened.
"Oh…" she whispered under her breath. "So that's it."
Her gaze slowly shifted to Ethan.
He wasn't paying attention. His mind was somewhere else, his eyes drifting back to Lia again without him even noticing.
Madison noticed everything.
Always.
Her lips curved slightly, but there was nothing soft about it.
After School
The hallway was loud with movement—students talking, lockers slamming, footsteps echoing everywhere.
Ethan stood by his locker, distracted, his mind clearly elsewhere.
Ryan stopped beside him, watching him for a moment.
"You've been off all day," Ryan said calmly. "What's going on with you?"
Ethan blinked like he had just been pulled back to reality.
"What?"
Ryan sighed lightly. "You're not focused. You didn't even hear what I just said."
"It's nothing," Ethan replied quickly.
Ryan studied him for a second but didn't push further.
Before he could say anything else—
"Ethan."
A voice interrupted them.
Madison.
Ryan stepped slightly back without a word, choosing to stay but also giving space.
Madison walked up slowly, her expression calm.
"You've been avoiding me," she said.
"I haven't," Ethan answered, though his voice wasn't fully confident.
Madison tilted her head.
"Really?"
Silence.
Ryan watched quietly from the side, not interrupting.
Madison stepped closer.
"Did I do something wrong?" she asked softly.
Ethan hesitated. "No… it's not that."
"Then why does it feel like you're pulling away?" she asked.
Ethan didn't answer.
Because he didn't know how.
Madison noticed the silence.
And she didn't like it.
But she didn't show it.
Instead, she softened her voice.
"Can we talk somewhere?"
Ethan looked unsure… but nodded slightly.
Behind the Basketball Court
The place was quieter here.
Less noise. Less people.
Just open space and distance.
Madison stopped walking first.
Ethan stood in front of her.
"What is this about?" he asked.
Madison studied him for a moment before speaking.
"You've changed," she said softly.
"I haven't," Ethan replied immediately.
But she shook her head.
"You have."
Her voice was steady now.
"You don't look at me the same way anymore."
Silence.
That statement hung in the air.
Ethan's jaw tightened slightly.
Madison stepped closer.
"So tell me," she said quietly, "is there someone else?"
That question made Ethan freeze for half a second.
And Madison saw it.
Everything she needed to see.
A faint smile formed on her lips.
"I see…" she whispered.
Ethan tried to speak. "Madison, it's not like that—"
"Then what is it like?" she cut in gently.
Her tone wasn't loud.
But it was sharp.
She stepped closer again, closing the space between them.
Ethan didn't move back.
Madison noticed that too.
Her expression softened again.
"You're confused," she said quietly.
"That's okay."
Her fingers slowly lifted—lightly touching his sleeve, then resting near his hand.
"But don't forget…" she added softly, "I've always been here."
Ethan's breathing slowed slightly.
Something about this felt wrong…
But he didn't step away.
Madison exhaled slowly, almost satisfied.
Because in her mind…
She wasn't losing him yet.
Not if she could help it.
Lia stood outside the classroom for a moment, her fingers gripping the strap of her bag tightly.
Her heart was not calm.
Not today.
She had heard things… pieces of conversations… fragments that didn't make sense at first.
But now they did.
And she needed answers.
"Ethan…" she whispered to herself. "You don't have to keep hiding it."
Her chest tightened.
"If it's true… just tell me."
She walked.
Fast at first… then slower as she reached the hallway that led to the basketball court.
That place.
Everyone knew it.
Ethan's silence place.
Where he went when he didn't want to talk.
Where he disappeared when something was wrong.
Lia stopped at the entrance for a second.
Then she pushed the door open.
The basketball court was quieter than usual.
Almost empty.
Except for two people.
Ethan.
And Madison.
Lia froze.
At first, she didn't even understand what she was seeing.
Ethan stood too close.
Madison's hand was on his arm.
And then—
Madison pulled him closer.
And kissed him.
Everything in Lia's world stopped.
Her bag slipped slightly from her shoulder.
Her breath caught.
No sound came out.
Just silence.
Painful silence.
Ethan's eyes suddenly opened mid-kiss.
And he saw her.
Lia.
Standing there.
Watching.
His entire body froze.
For a second, he didn't move.
Didn't breathe.
Didn't think.
Then he pulled back sharply.
"Lia—"
But she had already stepped back.
Her eyes didn't even stay on him for long.
It hurt too much.
She turned—
And ran.
Ethan's chest tightened instantly.
"Lia!" he called, taking a step forward.
But Madison grabbed his wrist tightly.
"Ethan—wait."
He turned sharply to her.
"Let go."
His voice was low.
Different.
Madison didn't let go immediately.
Instead, she stepped closer.
"You need to remember," she said quietly.
"Remember why we're doing this."
Ethan stared at her hand on his wrist.
Then back toward the direction Lia ran.
His breathing changed.
He pulled his hand free suddenly.
"Stop."
And then he ran after Lia.
Madison stood still.
Watching him leave.
Not surprised.
Just… patient.
Like she already knew this would happen.
And still believed it would end her way.
