Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Numbers Don’t Lie

The numbers didn't disappear.

If anything… they became clearer.

Lila sat still, her fingers lightly resting on the desk, as the classroom buzzed with idle chatter. Laughter. Complaints. The scratching of pens against paper.

Normal.

Painfully normal.

But over every head—

Numbers.

Floating. Shifting. Absolute.

Her gaze flickered to the boy two seats ahead.

[Danger Level: 15]

Harmless.

Annoying, maybe. Loud, definitely. But not a threat.

Next—

The quiet girl by the window.

[Danger Level: 3]

Even lower than before.

Lila narrowed her eyes slightly.

It changed.

Just a little. But it changed.

So it wasn't fixed.

Not permanent.

That meant one thing.

"…It can be Controlled ," she murmured under her breath.

"Hmm? Did you say something?"

Mira's voice came from beside her again—soft, curious, perfectly timed.

Lila turned her head.

Mira was watching her closely.

Smiling.

Always smiling.

Above her—

[Danger Level: 89]

Still high.

Still rising.

Lila's lips curved slightly in return.

"Just thinking about something," she said calmly.

Mira tilted her head. "You've been acting weird today."

"Have I?"

"A little." A pause. Then a soft laugh. "It's cute, though."

Lila didn't respond.

Instead, she looked away.

Disinterested.

Controlled.

Inside, her thoughts moved faster.

Mira notices small changes.

Observant. Careful.

Danger justified.

Her gaze shifted again—

Front row.

Ryan.

Still unaware.

Still… perfect.

Still playing the role of someone kind.

[Danger Level: 100]

It didn't flicker this time.

It stayed.

Stable.

Final.

Lila exhaled slowly.

So Mira could change.

But Ryan…

He was already at the peak.

That meant—

There's no version of him that isn't dangerous.

Her fingers curled slightly.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

"Alright, settle down!"

The teacher's voice cut through the room as he walked in, placing a stack of papers on the desk.

"Pop quiz today.

Groans filled the classroom.

Lila didn't react.

A quiz didn't matter.

Nothing here mattered.

Not anymore.

What mattered… was understanding the rules of this world.

Her world.

"Pass these back," the teacher said, handing a pile of papers to the first row.

Ryan stood up slightly to take them.

Polite.

Helpful.

Reliable.

The perfect student.

Lila watched him as he began passing the papers back, one by one.

Each movement smooth.

Natural.

Practiced.

He reached the second row.

Then

For a split second—

His hand brushed against another student's desk.

A girl.

Shy. Nervous.

Lila's eyes sharpened.

Above the girl's head—

[Danger Level: 4 → 11]

It spiked.

Just for a moment.

Then—

[Danger Level: 11 → 5]

It dropped again.

Lila froze.

…What?.

Her heartbeat slowed.

Her mind, however, accelerated.

Contact.

Interaction.

Change.

Her gaze snapped back to Ryan.

[Danger Level: 100]

Unmoved.

Unaffected.

But the girl—

She had changed.

Even if only briefly.

Lila leaned back slightly in her chair

So that's how it works.

It wasn't just observation.

It was cause and effect.

People influenced each other.

Constantly.

Subtly.

Danger wasn't just a trait—

It was dynamic.

Her lips curved faintly.

Now this…

This was useful.

"Hey."

A voice interrupted her thoughts.

Lila turned slightly.

The boy sitting behind her leaned forward, grinning.

"You spaced out. Again."

Above his head—

[Danger Level: 12]

Low.

Safe.

Predictable.

"Did I?" she replied lightly.

"Yeah. You okay? You've been kinda… off."

Lila studied him for a moment.

Then—

She made a decision.

A small test.

"I'm fine," she said, her tone softening just a little. "Just didn't sleep well."

The boy blinked, caught off guard by her tone.

"Oh. Uh… yeah, I get that."

Above his head—

[Danger Level: 12 → 9]

It dropped.

Lila's eyes darkened slightly.

Lowered.

Just from that?

From something that simple?

She leaned back again, her expression calm.

So she could influence it too.

Not just observe.

Not just react.

But control.

Slowly.

Carefully.

A game.

That's what this was.

And for the first time since she opened her eyes—

Lila felt something close to excitement.

The bell rang.

Chairs scraped against the floor as students began packing up.

Noise returned.

Movement.

Disorder.

Opportunity.

Lila stood up at a normal pace, slipping her bag over her shoulder.

Not too fast

Not too slow.

Invisible.

Her eyes scanned the room one last time.

Numbers everywhere.

Fluctuating.

Shifting.

Telling truths no one else could see.

Her gaze landed on Mira.

Still smiling.

Still perfect.

[Danger Level: 91]

Higher.

It had gone up again.

Then—

Ryan.

Already walking toward the door.

Surrounded by people

Admired.

Trusted.

[Danger Level: 100]

Unchanging.

Absolute.

Lila watched him for a moment longer.

Then—

She smiled.

Faint.

Cold.

So this is your world.

Your stage.

Your rules.

Her grip on her bag tightened slightly.

Not anymore.

She stepped forward, blending into the crowd as she followed behind them.

Quiet.

Patient.

Calculating.

This time….

I don't lose.

Her eyes lifted slightly—

Watching.

Measuring.

Waiting.

Because now—

She could see it all.

And once you see the truth.

There's no going back.
