Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: What We Refuse to Say

The village felt quieter after the test.

Not peaceful.

Just… cautious.

Like everyone was waiting for something to break again.

Ren sat under the training tree alone.

Staring at his hands.

He flexed his fingers once.

"…still here."

Stable.

For now.

But it didn't feel like victory.

It felt like holding glass together with invisible pressure.

Kuina Doesn't Sit Far Anymore

Footsteps.

Soft.

Kuina sat down beside him without asking.

No distance.

No hesitation.

Just close.

"…you're overthinking again."

Ren gave a faint smile.

"…you say that a lot."

"…because you do it a lot."

Silence.

A breeze passed between them.

Different now.

Less tense.

More… personal.

Words She Doesn't Usually Say

Kuina stared forward.

"…you scared me yesterday."

Ren blinked slightly.

"…you already said that."

"…I know."

She paused.

Longer than usual.

Then—

"…I don't like that feeling."

Silence.

That was new.

Honest in a different way.

Unfiltered.

Ren didn't respond immediately.

Because that wasn't something he could deflect easily.

"…I'm trying not to make it happen again."

Kuina nodded slightly.

"…try harder."

A small pause.

Then—

"…and don't disappear while trying."

Zoro's Declaration

From the training field—

Zoro's voice cut through.

"…OI!"

Both turned.

Zoro stood there holding his sword.

Eyes sharp.

Different from before.

"…I decided something."

Kuina crossed her arms.

"…you usually do."

Zoro ignored that.

He pointed his sword forward.

"…I'm not just going to be the strongest swordsman."

Silence.

Ren watched closely.

Zoro continued.

"…I'm going to be strong enough that nothing like that guy can touch us again."

Pause.

"…not Ren's power."

"…not whatever the hell that was."

His grip tightened.

"…nothing."

That wasn't arrogance.

It was direction.

Kuina studied him quietly.

"…you're serious."

Zoro nodded.

"…always."

Ren's New Control

Ren stood up slowly.

"…I want to try something."

Kuina frowned slightly.

"…now?"

"…now."

Zoro stepped closer.

"…what kind of thing?"

Ren exhaled.

Then reached inward.

The darkness responded—

But differently now.

More structured.

More predictable.

He extended it slightly.

Not outward.

But around himself.

Controlled Death Reaper – Layered State

For a moment—

His perception sharpened.

Not chaotic vision.

But controlled awareness.

He could feel:

Kuina's presence (steady, sharp)

Zoro's (burning, direct)

The environment (flowing, stable)

And something beyond—

Still distant.

Still watching.

But not interfering.

Kuina's eyes widened slightly.

"…you're not losing yourself."

Ren nodded slowly.

"…I think I can separate activation and identity now."

Zoro frowned.

"…that sounds like training jargon."

"…it kind of is."

But this time—

Ren smiled faintly.

It was real progress.

A Moment That Lingers Too Long

Silence settled again.

But it wasn't uncomfortable.

Kuina shifted slightly closer.

"…Ren."

"…hm?"

She hesitated.

Longer than usual.

Then—

"…when you almost disappeared yesterday…"

Ren turned slightly.

She didn't look at him.

"…I thought… I was going to lose you."

Silence.

That sentence landed heavier than anything else today.

Ren didn't speak immediately.

Because she wasn't talking about training.

Or power.

Or danger.

She was talking about him.

What He Cannot Answer Easily

"…I'm still here," Ren said quietly.

Kuina nodded once.

"…I know."

Pause.

Then softer—

"…but don't make me get used to the other possibility."

Silence.

Ren looked at her.

Really looked.

And for a moment—

That "soul vision" flickered again.

Her outline.

Stable.

But connected.

Not just to herself.

But faintly—

To him.

And Zoro.

Threads beginning to form.

Zoro Notices Something Else

Zoro suddenly frowned.

"…oi."

Both looked at him.

He pointed slightly between them.

"…why does it feel like you two are in your own world?"

Kuina blinked.

"…what?"

Ren exhaled softly.

"…ignore him."

Zoro narrowed his eyes.

"…that's suspicious."

But he didn't push further.

Not yet.

Far Away – The Second Test Begins

Deep in the forest outskirts—

The Observer stood again.

But this time—

He wasn't alone.

A small device floated near his hand.

"…phase two."

He tapped it.

The air around him shifted.

"…let's see what happens when memory is removed instead of pressure applied."

A faint smile.

"…and whether emotional anchors can survive that."
