Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Price That Stays

The morning after the pirates left felt normal.

Too normal.

That was what bothered Ren the most.

The village was the same.

The wind the same.

Even the sea looked the same.

But he wasn't.

Something Missing

Ren sat on the wooden steps outside his house.

He stared at his hand.

Opened it.

Closed it.

"…still works."

But something felt off.

Not pain.

Not injury.

Just—

Less.

Like a fraction of weight he didn't notice before was gone.

Kuina's voice broke his thoughts.

"…you didn't sleep."

Ren looked up.

She stood there already dressed for training.

Observing him carefully.

"…didn't feel like it."

Kuina narrowed her eyes slightly.

"…your face is pale."

Ren forced a small smile.

"…you're imagining things again."

She didn't accept that.

But she didn't push yet.

Zoro Notices First

"…oi."

Zoro appeared behind Kuina.

Arms crossed.

"…you're slower."

Ren blinked.

"…what?"

Zoro stepped closer.

"…your swing yesterday was faster."

Silence.

Kuina looked between them.

"…he's right."

Ren frowned.

"…it's probably fatigue."

Zoro shook his head immediately.

"…no."

Direct.

Certain.

"…it's different."

Ren felt it then.

That subtle shift in perception.

Zoro wasn't guessing.

He was feeling it.

Something instinctive.

The First Permanent Cost

Ren closed his eyes slightly.

Reached inward.

The darkness answered.

But—

It responded differently.

Slower.

Like it had grown heavier inside him.

"…huh…"

He tried to extend it.

Just a little.

But the response—

Was weaker.

Less fluid.

Kuina stepped closer.

"…what are you doing?"

"…testing something."

Zoro frowned.

"…again with that weird power?"

Ren opened his eyes.

"…something changed."

Silence.

He looked at his hand again.

"…it's not fully mine anymore."

Kuina stiffened slightly.

"…what does that mean?"

Ren hesitated.

Then—

"…it took something last time."

Zoro narrowed his eyes.

"…when you saved Kuina."

Ren nodded.

"…and I think it didn't give it back."

Silence.

That landed heavily.

Kuina's Reaction

Kuina stepped closer.

"…you mean you lost something?"

Ren nodded slowly.

"…I think so."

Her voice lowered.

"…like what?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Because he didn't know.

But he felt it.

A small gap.

In memory.

In instinct.

In something fundamental.

"…pieces," he said quietly.

Kuina's expression tightened slightly.

"…that's dangerous."

"…I know."

Zoro crossed his arms.

"…then stop using it."

Ren shook his head.

"…can't."

Zoro frowned.

"…why not?"

Ren looked at both of them.

"…because if I don't understand it…"

His voice lowered.

"…it'll eventually take more than I can afford."

Silence.

A New Kind of Weakness

Kuina studied him carefully.

"…you're not just getting stronger."

Ren blinked.

"…what?"

She stepped closer.

"…you're becoming unstable."

That word hit harder than expected.

Zoro nodded once.

"…yeah."

Direct.

No hesitation.

"…you feel off."

Ren let out a small breath.

"…I noticed."

Kuina frowned slightly.

"…can you fix it?"

Ren hesitated.

"…I don't know yet."

Silence.

Then—

Kuina surprised him.

She stepped forward and lightly tapped his chest.

"…then don't die before you figure it out."

Ren blinked.

"…that's your advice?"

"…yes."

Simple.

Honest.

Very Kuina.

Training Changes

Zoro stepped back.

"…we train differently from now on."

Ren raised an eyebrow.

"…how?"

Zoro pointed his sword forward.

"…no hesitation."

Kuina nodded slightly.

"…and no relying on strange power."

Ren frowned slightly.

"…that's difficult."

Zoro smirked.

"…then get stronger properly."

Kuina added calmly:

"…so you don't break."

Silence.

Ren exhaled.

"…you two are really strict."

Zoro grinned.

"…you're welcome."

A Quiet Observation

Far away—

Not pirates this time.

Not Marines.

A lone man stood on a cliff overlooking the sea.

Dressed in plain clothing.

Calm expression.

Sharp eyes.

"…interesting."

He spoke softly.

Behind him—

A Den Den Mushi clicked.

"…report?"

The man didn't move.

"…something unnatural is forming in the East Blue."

Silence.

Then—

"…no. not forming."

A pause.

"…awakening."

He turned slightly.

Wind brushing his coat.

"…watch it closely."

Ren Alone

That night—

Ren stood at the shore again.

The sea looked endless.

But different now.

He could feel it more clearly.

The "threads" he sensed before—

Were thicker.

Stronger.

And closer.

But—

His own thread…

Was fraying slightly.

"…I'm not the same anymore."

He closed his eyes.

Reached inward.

The darkness responded.

But now—

It felt like something inside it was watching him back.

Not hostile.

Not friendly.

Just aware.

A Quiet Promise

Behind him—

Footsteps.

Kuina.

"…you always come here."

Ren didn't turn.

"…helps me think."

She stood beside him.

Silence.

Then—

"…you saved me."

Ren sighed softly.

"…you already said that."

"…I know."

Pause.

Then softer—

"…but I didn't thank you properly."

Ren turned slightly.

Kuina looked at the sea.

Not at him.

"…so thank you."

Silence.

Wind passed between them.

Ren smiled faintly.

"…you're welcome."

A pause.

Then—

Kuina added quietly:

"…don't disappear."

He didn't answer immediately.

Because this time—

He understood what she meant.

"…I won't."

But inside—

He wasn't sure he could promise that anymore.

Something Is Becoming Real

Far away—

The man on the cliff narrowed his eyes.

"…the thread is unstable."

He closed his eyes.

"…but it is definitely there."

A slow breath.

"…this will be troublesome."
