Chapter 10 - Chapter 9: The Poison in the Halls

The air inside Saint Jude's University had shifted. To the rest of the elite student body, it was just another Tuesday of high-stakes lectures and overpriced espresso. But for Seraphina, the gothic arches felt like they were leaning inward, suffocating her.She walked through the foyer of the Political Science wing, her hand instinctively pressing against the pocket where the letter was hidden. Every time her father's security detail—led by a stony-faced, silent Kael—stepped within five feet of her, she felt a surge of pure, visceral nausea. She looked at Kael's broad shoulders and realized he wasn't her protector. He was her jailer's favorite hound."Seraphina, you're pale," Kael murmured as they reached the lecture hall doors. He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a tone of forced intimacy that made her skin crawl. "If you're still upset about that girl from the pier, I can handle it. I can make sure she never bothers you again."Sera turned on him, her eyes flashing with a Rossi fire he had never seen before. "You will stay exactly where you are, Kael. You will not touch her, you will not look at her, and you will certainly not speak her name. Am I clear?"Kael flinched, his jaw tightening. The devotion in his eyes curdled into something darker—a possessive hurt. "I only want what's best for you.""You want what my father tells you to want," she snapped, pushing through the doors into the hall. She scanned the room, her heart doing a frantic, painful roll. She needed to see Lyra. She needed the grounding heat of the girl who had ruined her life just to show her the truth. But Lyra wasn't in her usual seat. Instead, a shock of blood-red leather was draped over a chair in the back row.**Raven.**The girl from the bike was lounging with a predatory grace, a silver tongue-piercing clicking against her teeth as she watched Sera enter. She wasn't a student, but at Saint Jude's, money and a certain level of "street" reputation could bypass any security desk.Sera sat three rows down, trying to focus on her tablet, but she could feel Raven's eyes burning into the back of her neck."You must be the Princess," a voice purred.Sera didn't have to look up to see Raven leaning over the back of her chair. The scent was overpowering—heavy musk and expensive gasoline."I don't know who you are," Sera said, her voice steady."I'm the girl who knows where Lyra Vane hides her scars," Raven whispered, a slow, cruel smile spreading across her face. "And I'm the girl who's going to be there when she gets bored of playing house with a virgin like you. Lyra doesn't do 'delicate,' sweetheart. She likes the wreck. She likes people who can bleed with her."Sera's grip on her tablet tightened until the plastic groaned. "If you have something to say about Lyra, say it to her.""Oh, I have," Raven laughed, a dark, jagged sound. "Last night, in fact. Right after she dropped you off. She tastes like bourbon and lies, doesn't she? Just remember—you're a mission. I'm a habit. And habits are a lot harder to break."The door to the lecture hall slammed open.Lyra walked in, her grey hoodie pulled low, her energy radiating a cold, sharp anger. She stopped dead when she saw Raven leaning over Sera. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees."Raven," Lyra growled, her voice a vibration that Sera felt in her own marrow. "Get out. Now."Raven stood up slowly, winking at Sera before turning to Lyra. "Just making friends, Lyra. The Princess was telling me all about her mother. Or was that the lie you told her to get into her bed?"The explosion was instantaneous. Lyra moved faster than Sera's eyes could follow, grabbing Raven by the collar of her red leather jacket and slamming her against the wood-paneled wall. The sound of the impact echoed like a gunshot."If you speak to her again," Lyra hissed, her face inches from Raven's, "I will forget that we ever shared a roof. I will break every bone in your hands. Do you understand me?"Raven didn't look scared; she looked aroused. She let out a soft, breathless laugh. "There she is. The monster I love. See you tonight, Lyra?"Lyra shoved her away, her chest heaving. Raven adjusted her jacket, blew a kiss toward a trembling Sera, and sauntered out of the room. The lecture hall was silent. Every student was staring. Lyra didn't look at them. She looked at Sera, and for a split second, the "Alpha" mask fell. Her eyes were filled with a raw, agonizing guilt—the look of a woman who was watching her two worlds collide and realizing she couldn't protect either of them.Sera stood up, her books forgotten. She walked toward Lyra, ignoring Kael, who was already halfway through the door with his hand on his weapon."Is it true?" Sera whispered, her voice breaking. "Did you go to her last night? After the pier?"Lyra's jaw worked, her gaze dropping to the floor. "Sera, it's not what you think. Raven is... she's a ghost I can't get rid of.""Everything is a lie, isn't it?" Sera asked, a single tear tracing a path down her pale cheek. "My father, Kael, you... the only difference is that you made me feel alive before you killed me."Sera turned and ran out the side exit, her heart shattered.Lyra started to follow, but Kael blocked her path, his face a mask of cold, professional hatred. "Stay away from her, Vane. You've done enough damage for one lifetime.""Step aside, Kael," Lyra said, her voice dropping to a tone that promised violence. "Before I show you exactly what a Vane is capable of."The slow-burn was gone. The University was no longer a school—it was a cage, and the predators were finally showing their teeth.
