Chapter 9 - Chapter 8: The Ghost and the Guardian

The walk back from the pier felt like wading through a dream made of lead. Sera clutched the yellowed envelope against her chest, the paper crinkling under her white-knuckled grip. Her world hadn't just cracked; it had been leveled. Every memory of her father's "gentle" protection now felt like a drop of venom.Lyra walked beside her, her hands shoved deep into her pockets, her gaze scanning the shadows with a restless intensity. The silence between them wasn't cold anymore—it was heavy, vibrating with the shared weight of the truth."I can't go back there," Sera whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind. "I can't look at him, Lyra. Not tonight.""You have to," Lyra said, her voice like a serrated blade. "If you change your routine now, he'll know something happened. You have to be the Princess for a few more hours, Sera. Just until we figure out the next move."As they reached the edge of the industrial district where the streetlights began to flicker back to life, a pair of headlights cut through the fog, blinding them. A sleek, silver sedan pulled to the curb with a screech of tires.**Kael** stepped out. He wasn't in his usual suit; he was in a tactical jacket, his face pale with a mix of terror and fury."Seraphina!" he shouted, rushing toward them. He ignored Lyra entirely, reaching for Sera's arm. "Do you have any idea what you've done? I've been scouring the city for two hours. If your father found out I lost you, it wouldn't just be my job—it would be my life."Sera flinched away from his touch, her eyes wide. "I'm fine, Kael. I just... I needed air.""With *her*?" Kael finally turned his gaze to Lyra, his hand instinctively dropping to the holster at his hip. "I told you to stay away from her, Vane. You're a parasite. You think because you have a fast car and a loud mouth that you can play with a Rossi?"Lyra stepped forward, her smirk returning, though it didn't reach her eyes. The "Alpha" was back, masking the guilt that had nearly choked her on the pier. "Careful, Kael. Your jealousy is showing. You're supposed to be the dog that guards the gate, not the one that barks at the guests.""She isn't a guest," Kael hissed, stepping into Lyra's space. He was taller than Lyra, but Lyra didn't move an inch. "She's the target of every gutter-rat in this city. And you're the biggest one of them all.""Kael, stop it!" Sera cried out, stepping between them. The irony was bitter—the man who claimed to love her was the one keeping her in the dark, while the girl who was using her had just given her the truth. "He's taking me home, Kael. Now."Kael's expression softened into a look of pained devotion. "Sera, I'm trying to protect you. You don't know what these people are capable of.""I know exactly what people are capable of," Sera said, her voice cold. She climbed into the back of the sedan without looking back.Lyra watched the car pull away, her jaw tight. She stood alone in the rain for a long moment until the sound of a motorcycle engine purred behind her. It wasn't Jax's bike. This engine was tuned higher, screaming with a familiar, erratic energy.A Ducati pulled up, the rider clad in blood-red leather. The helmet came off, revealing a shock of dark hair and eyes that sparkled with malice and longing.**Raven.**"You're losing your edge, Lyra," Raven said, leaning against her bike. She looked at the retreating taillights of Kael's car. "Spending your nights with a little church girl? That's not the woman who used to leave marks on my skin.""Go home, Raven," Lyra muttered, not turning around."I am home," Raven purred, walking toward Lyra with the swaying grace of a snake. She stopped inches from Lyra's back, her hands sliding up Lyra's arms. "I saw the way you were holding her on the pier. It looked a lot like a mission, but you were holding on a little too tight. Is the big, bad Vane falling for the Princess?"Lyra spun around, grabbing Raven's wrists and pinning them to her chest. The tension was instant—an old, toxic heat that felt like ash compared to the fire she felt with Sera."Don't touch me," Lyra growled."Make me," Raven challenged, a dark smile playing on her lips. "You know you miss the chaos, Lyra. That girl is a porcelain doll. One touch from our world and she'll shatter. But me? I can handle the wreck."Raven leaned in, her lips brushing Lyra's jaw. "The Old Man told me you were getting distracted. He asked me to come back and... remind you where you belong. I'm not letting you go to a Rossi, Lyra. Not ever."Lyra pushed her away, her eyes cold. "The only place I belong is at the finish line of this mission. Stay out of my way, Raven. Or I'll break you myself."As Lyra walked away toward her own SUV, she felt the walls closing in. Kael was watching from the inside. Raven was hunting from the outside. And in the middle of it all was Sera—the girl whose heart Lyra was currently breaking in slow motion. The slow burn was turning into a war. And Lyra was the only one who knew that no matter who won, everyone was going to burn.
