Chapter 14 - Voices At the Same Table

Scene 1: Mahi's Writing Gets Noticed

That night was quieter than usual for Mahi.

She sat in her room, laptop open, but she wasn't typing. She was just staring at the screen.

Her story page was still open.

Something had changed.

Her last update had started getting more attention than before.

Comments.

Reads.

Small shares.

Nothing massive.

But enough to be real.

She clicked slowly.

One comment stood out:

"This writer has a very simple way of making emotions feel real."

Mahi read it once.

Then again.

Her expression didn't change much, but her fingers paused slightly on the keyboard.

Not happiness.

Not shock.

Just awareness that something she kept hidden was no longer fully hidden.

She closed the laptop gently.

Like she didn't want to disturb it.

Scene 2: Family Sitting Together

The next evening, the house felt different.

Grandfather had come to visit.

The dining table was fuller than usual—simple food, warm atmosphere, but with tension underneath conversations.

Ayaan sat at the head, as always calm and composed.

Kriti sat beside him, already looking like she had a complaint ready.

Mahi sat quietly, eating slowly, not interrupting anyone.

Grandfather smiled lightly.

"It feels good seeing all of you together like this."

Kriti immediately leaned forward.

"Only if someone here stops controlling my entire life."

Ayaan didn't even look at her.

"Eat."

Kriti turned to grandfather.

"See? This is what I'm talking about."

Grandfather chuckled slightly.

"Ayaan has always been strict."

Kriti pointed at him.

"Strict is a small word. This is full-time dictatorship."

Ayaan calmly said, "You are employed. Not unemployed with opinions."

Kriti gasped.

"That was rude."

Scene 3: Kriti Complains to Grandfather

Kriti turned fully to grandfather.

"Please tell him. I just graduated and I didn't even get one week of peace. He threw me straight into work."

Grandfather looked at Ayaan.

Ayaan responded before he could speak.

"If she learns discipline now, she won't struggle later."

Kriti raised her voice slightly.

"I am struggling now!"

Mahi looked up briefly but stayed quiet.

Grandfather sighed softly.

"Kriti, work is not punishment."

Kriti replied quickly.

"It feels like it."

Ayaan finally looked at her.

"It feels like that because you are avoiding responsibility."

Kriti opened her mouth, then closed it again.

For once, no comeback came immediately.

Scene 4: Mahi Speaks Softly

A small silence fell at the table.

Only the sound of cutlery remained.

Mahi spoke gently, still eating.

"We didn't even get one week to rest after graduation."

Everyone turned slightly toward her.

She continued, calm and honest.

"Everything started immediately. Job, pressure… expectations."

Kriti nodded quickly.

"Yes! Exactly!"

Ayaan looked at Mahi.

His tone remained steady.

"Rest creates delay. Delay creates comfort. Comfort reduces growth."

Kriti leaned back.

"That sounded like a lecture again."

Grandfather smiled faintly, watching all three.

Mahi didn't argue.

She just said softly,

"Still… it was sudden."

Ayaan paused for a moment.

He didn't respond immediately.

Not disagreement.

Not agreement either.

Just silence that meant he understood the statement, even if he didn't fully change his stance.

Scene 5: Ending Moment

After dinner, the atmosphere slowly softened.

Kriti still complained under her breath.

Ayaan returned to his usual calm state.

Grandfather watched them like someone who had seen this family dynamic many times before.

And Mahi quietly stood up, carrying her plate to the kitchen.

But as she walked away, her phone buzzed again.

Another notification.

More readers.

More comments.

Her story was spreading further than before.

She looked at it for a moment.

Then locked the screen.

Because even though the world was starting to notice her…

she still wasn't ready to let anyone fully see her.

Not yet.
