Chapter 2 - The Marking Ceremony

Aria didn't sleep.

Sleep felt like surrender—and surrender felt like death.

She sat in a cold stone cell carved beneath the Blackfang fortress, her wrists bound with silver chains that hummed faintly whenever she tried to pull away. Every time she moved, pain sparked through her skin like lightning.

Outside, the world was alive.

Inside, she was buried.

The cell had no windows, only a narrow slit near the ceiling where moonlight spilled in like a distant memory. From somewhere far above, she could hear chanting.

Deep voices.

Rhythmic.

Unsettling.

Aria pressed her palms against the cold wall.

"This isn't real…" she whispered to herself. "This is just a nightmare. I'll wake up. I'll wake up and—"

A scream cut through the fortress.

She froze.

Then another.

And another.

Aria stepped back instinctively.

"What are they doing…" she whispered.

The mark on her neck pulsed.

Hot.

Alive.

As if it were listening.

She touched it cautiously.

The moment her fingers brushed her skin, a sharp image flashed through her mind—

A throne room.

Blood on stone.

A full moon turning red.

And Kael's eyes… watching her from the darkness.

Aria gasped and stumbled back.

"No… no, stop that," she hissed at herself.

But the bond didn't listen.

It never did.

Footsteps echoed outside her cell.

Heavy.

Measured.

Aria turned sharply.

The door opened.

Kael stepped inside.

Everything in her body reacted at once.

Fear.

Anger.

Something worse she refused to name.

He was dressed differently now.

Not as a warrior.

Not as an Alpha in battle.

But as something closer to ritual.

A long dark coat hung from his shoulders. Ancient silver markings ran along the edges of his collarbone, glowing faintly under the torchlight. His presence filled the entire space like gravity had shifted just for him.

He didn't look at the chains.

He looked at her.

Always her.

"You haven't slept," he said.

Aria straightened, forcing herself not to flinch. "Why would I sleep in a cage?"

Kael studied her for a moment.

Then he stepped closer.

The chains reacted instantly—tightening, humming louder.

Aria gritted her teeth.

"Don't come near me."

Kael ignored her warning completely.

He crouched in front of her, close enough that she could see the faint scar under his left eye. A scar she hadn't noticed before.

"You're shaking," he said.

"I'm not."

A pause.

Then, quieter—

"You are."

Aria hated that he noticed everything.

She hated even more that his voice wasn't cruel right now.

Just… calm.

Like he wasn't her captor.

Like this was normal.

"What do you want?" she snapped.

Kael's gaze dropped briefly to her neck.

"To prepare you."

Her stomach dropped.

"For what?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached out.

Aria jerked back instantly. "Don't touch me!"

Kael stopped.

For the first time, something like restraint crossed his expression.

"I won't hurt you," he said.

Aria laughed bitterly.

"That's funny coming from the man who kidnapped me, marked me, and locked me underground."

A flicker passed through his eyes.

Not guilt.

Something deeper.

Something buried.

"You don't understand what you are," he said.

"Then explain it!"

Silence.

For a moment, the entire cell felt too small for his presence.

Kael stood slowly.

"You are the chosen vessel of the Moon Bond."

Aria blinked.

"That means nothing."

"It means everything."

He turned slightly, as if choosing his words carefully for the first time.

"Every hundred years, the moon chooses a female from a weak bloodline. She carries the power to stabilize or destroy Alpha bloodlines."

Aria frowned.

"That sounds like a fairy tale."

"It is our reality."

She shook her head. "No. No, I'm just… I'm just a girl from a broken pack. That's it."

Kael looked at her.

And for the first time…

Something softened.

Barely.

"You were abandoned by your pack for a reason," he said quietly.

Aria froze.

That hit harder than anything else.

"Don't talk about my pack," she snapped.

Kael didn't react.

Instead, he stepped back.

"The ceremony begins at midnight."

Aria's breath caught.

"Ceremony?"

Kael turned toward the door.

"The marking will be completed."

Panic surged instantly.

"No—wait!" Aria rushed forward, chains clinking violently. "I didn't agree to anything!"

Kael paused at the doorway.

Without turning fully, he said—

"You were chosen long before you were born."

Then he left.

The door shut.

And the world went silent again.

Except now…

Silence felt like a countdown.

Midnight came too quickly.

Too brutally.

Aria was dragged out of the cell by two female wolves this time. They didn't speak. They didn't look at her directly. It was like she was already something sacred—or cursed.

She fought them anyway.

"Let me go!" she shouted, twisting her arms. "I'm not going anywhere!"

But they were stronger.

Stronger and faster.

They dressed her in something she didn't recognize.

A long flowing black gown stitched with silver threads that shimmered like moonlight. The fabric clung to her skin like it was alive.

"No…" she whispered when she saw herself in the mirror.

This wasn't clothing.

This was preparation.

For sacrifice.

They led her through long corridors carved with ancient symbols.

The chanting grew louder.

Deeper.

The entire fortress felt like it was breathing.

Aria's heart pounded violently.

"What is this place…" she whispered.

No one answered.

Finally, they reached the hall.

The doors opened.

And Aria stopped breathing.

The room was enormous.

A circular chamber carved entirely from black stone, open at the top so the full moon shone directly into the center.

Hundreds of wolves stood around the edges.

All silent.

All watching.

And at the center—

Kael.

Waiting.

He stood beneath the moonlight like it belonged to him.

Aria's breath shook.

"No…" she whispered.

The women released her.

She stumbled forward slightly.

And every single eye turned to her.

The whispers began instantly.

"The sacrifice bride…" "She's real…" "She's the one…"

Aria felt like she was being swallowed alive.

Kael stepped forward.

The entire room fell silent instantly.

He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

"Bring her forward."

Aria backed away immediately. "No. I said no!"

Two warriors moved toward her.

She spun around.

Ran.

But the moment she moved—

The ground lit up.

Silver lines erupted beneath her feet, forming a glowing circle.

She froze.

"What is this?!" she shouted.

Kael's voice came from behind her.

"A binding circle."

Aria turned sharply.

"Why can't I leave?!"

"Because the bond recognizes completion is near."

Her breathing turned ragged.

"I don't want this bond!"

Kael stepped into the circle.

Instantly, the energy shifted.

The air tightened.

Even the wolves around them lowered their heads.

Power acknowledged power.

Kael stopped in front of her.

Close.

Too close again.

"You were never meant to choose," he said quietly.

Aria glared up at him.

"Everyone gets a choice!"

"Not you."

That word hit her like a slap.

Something inside her snapped.

She raised her hand and pushed against his chest.

"Then I refuse you!"

The moment her palm touched him—

Everything exploded.

A shockwave burst through the chamber.

The wolves staggered back.

The moonlight above flickered.

Aria screamed as pain ripped through her body.

The mark on her neck burned violently.

Kael grabbed her instantly before she collapsed.

"Stop resisting," he said sharply.

"I won't—!" she gasped. "I won't belong to you!"

Kael tightened his grip.

For the first time—

Emotion cracked through his calm exterior.

"You already do."

Aria looked up at him.

And something changed.

For a split second…

She saw something behind his eyes.

Not cruelty.

Not dominance.

But something… broken.

Lonely.

Controlled.

Then it vanished.

He lifted her slightly.

And placed her at the center of the circle.

Aria struggled weakly. "Don't—please don't do this…"

Kael stepped back.

The moonlight intensified.

The symbols on the ground began to glow brighter.

The entire hall began to hum.

Kael raised his hand.

And the entire room knelt instantly.

Even Aria's breath stopped.

Because she realized something terrifying.

They weren't afraid of her.

They were afraid of him.

Kael looked at her one last time.

And said—

"Accept the bond."

Aria's voice broke.

"No…"

The moon reached its peak.

And the mark on her neck exploded with light.

Aria screamed.

The world disappeared.

And in that moment…

Something inside her answered the call.

Something ancient.

Something powerful.

Something that did not belong to fear.

But to destiny.
