Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

"No."

The word left Nyra before she could stop it.

Sharp. Immediate. Denying everything she had just heard.

The clearing remained frozen, but the silence had changed.

It was no longer confusion.

It was shock.

Kieran's gaze snapped to her, his expression darkening with something far more dangerous than anger.

"That's not possible," he said.

But his voice lacked certainty.

Nyra's heart pounded violently against her ribs.

Nyx was no longer restless.

She was alert.

Focused.

Certain.

It's true.

"No," Nyra whispered again, shaking her head as she took a step back. "That doesn't make sense. That can't… it just happened."

Her thoughts were racing, crashing into each other with no order.

The bond had just formed.

There was no way.

No time.

No explanation.

Caius didn't move.

Didn't argue.

Didn't try to convince her.

That was what made it worse.

Because he wasn't guessing.

He knew.

"You felt it before I said it," Caius said quietly.

Nyra's breath caught.

Her hand moved instinctively to her abdomen again.

The sensation was still there.

Stronger now.

Not pain.

Not discomfort.

Something else.

Something alive.

Nyx shifted closer.

Protective.

Ours.

Nyra's chest tightened.

"I don't understand," she said, her voice unsteady.

Kieran stepped forward.

This time, slower.

Measured.

Dangerous.

"Explain," he said, his eyes fixed on Caius.

Caius finally turned his attention to him fully.

"You already know what it means."

Kieran's jaw tightened.

"No," he said. "I want to hear you say it."

The tension in the clearing thickened again.

Nyra felt it pressing against her, heavier than before.

Because this wasn't just about her anymore.

This was about something bigger.

Something the entire pack understood… even if she didn't.

Caius didn't hesitate.

"The bond didn't form tonight," he said.

Nyra's heart stopped.

Kieran's expression shifted.

Just slightly.

But enough.

"That's not possible," Kieran said again, but this time it sounded more like denial than certainty.

Caius's gaze flicked back to Nyra.

"It was already there," he said. "It just hadn't surfaced yet."

Nyra shook her head.

"No… I would have felt it."

"You did," Caius said. "You just didn't understand it."

Fragments of memory flickered in her mind.

Moments she had ignored.

Strange pulls she had dismissed.

Dreams that had felt too real.

Nyra's breath hitched.

Nyx stirred again.

We knew.

"No," Nyra whispered, but it sounded weaker now.

Kieran's control snapped.

"That doesn't change anything," he said sharply. "She belongs to this pack."

Nyx snarled.

Not his.

Caius's expression darkened instantly.

"She is not something you own."

The words landed heavily.

The pack shifted uneasily.

Because this wasn't just disagreement.

This was challenge.

Direct.

Unavoidable.

Kieran stepped closer.

"You lost the right to claim anything the moment you were exiled."

Caius didn't react.

"If that were true," he said calmly, "we wouldn't be standing here."

The bond pulsed.

Nyra felt it stronger than ever.

Like it was responding to every word.

Every challenge.

Every claim.

Her body tensed.

The sensation in her abdomen flared again.

Sharper.

More insistent.

Nyra sucked in a breath.

Nyx went still.

Listening.

It's reacting.

To what?

Nyra didn't have time to figure it out.

Because the clearing shifted again.

This time, not from Caius.

Not from Kieran.

From the pack.

Voices started rising.

Low at first.

Then louder.

"What does this mean?"

"If it's true…"

"That child…"

Nyra's chest tightened.

Child.

The word hit differently now.

Heavier.

Real.

"No," she said under her breath, shaking her head.

This couldn't be happening.

Not like this.

Not here.

Kieran turned sharply toward the elders.

"Enough," he said. "We will not entertain speculation."

But it was too late.

The idea was already out.

Already spreading.

Already taking shape.

Caius stepped forward again.

Not aggressive.

Not rushed.

But certain.

"She comes with me," he said.

The words cut through everything.

The clearing fell silent again.

Nyra's heart slammed against her ribs.

Kieran's expression hardened instantly.

"No."

The refusal was immediate.

Final.

"She stays here."

Nyx surged.

Wrong.

Nyra felt it too.

The pull.

Stronger now.

More urgent.

Like her body was already choosing.

Already leaning.

Already deciding.

Caius's gaze locked onto hers.

"You feel it," he said quietly.

Nyra swallowed.

She did.

It was impossible to ignore now.

The bond.

The pull.

The instinct to move toward him.

Kieran stepped between them again.

"You're not taking her," he said.

Caius didn't even look at him.

"You can't keep her here."

The words were calm.

But final.

Kieran's control snapped again.

"I can do whatever I decide."

Nyx bristled.

Try.

The challenge burned through Nyra.

The tension reached its peak.

Unstable.

Ready to break.

Nyra stepped forward.

The movement shocked everyone.

Including herself.

"I'm not something to be argued over," she said.

Her voice was still unsteady.

But there was something new beneath it.

Strength.

Both Alphas looked at her.

For the first time…

Waiting.

Nyra's chest rose and fell quickly.

Her thoughts were still chaotic.

Her emotions all over the place.

But one thing was clear.

She felt the bond.

And she couldn't ignore it.

"I don't understand what's happening," she said, her voice quieter now. "But I feel it."

Her gaze shifted to Caius.

The pull tightened immediately.

Stronger.

Clearer.

Real.

Nyx leaned into it.

Home.

Nyra's breath hitched.

Her gaze snapped back to Kieran.

"I don't feel that with you."

The words landed hard.

Kieran didn't react immediately.

But something in his expression changed.

Something colder.

More dangerous.

"Feelings can be manipulated," he said.

Nyx snarled.

Lie.

Caius didn't speak.

Didn't need to.

Because the bond answered for him.

Nyra felt it again.

Deep.

Unshakable.

Her decision wasn't fully formed.

Not yet.

But it was coming.

Fast.

Kieran saw it.

And that was when everything shifted.

"Fine," he said.

The word cut through the clearing.

Unexpected.

Calm.

Too calm.

Nyra's chest tightened.

Because that tone…

It wasn't acceptance.

It was strategy.

"If you believe this bond is real," Kieran continued, his gaze moving between her and Caius, "then we'll test it."

Nyra's stomach dropped.

Test it?

Caius's expression darkened.

"What are you planning?"

Kieran's lips curved slightly.

Not a smile.

Something sharper.

"Something simple," he said.

The clearing went completely still.

Because everyone understood.

This was not going to be simple.

Nyra's pulse pounded.

"What kind of test?"

Kieran's eyes locked onto hers.

Cold.

Certain.

"Tomorrow," he said, "you'll stand before the pack again."

The tension spiked.

"And you'll choose."

Nyra's breath caught.

Choose?

Kieran didn't look away.

"If the bond is real," he said, "you'll walk to him."

The words hung in the air.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Nyra's chest tightened.

"And if I don't?"

Kieran's expression didn't change.

"Then this ends."

Nyx went still.

She growled.

Low.

Threatening.

Because they both understood what that meant.

Nyra's heart pounded violently.

Because this wasn't a test.

It was a trap.

And somehow…

She already knew.

Whatever happened tomorrow

Nothing would ever be the same again.
