Chapter 4 - Chapter 6: The Wish She Was Afraid to Say

The hospital room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Only the soft beeping of the monitor reminded Aarav that time was still moving… even if everything else felt frozen.

Meera lay resting, her eyes closed, her breathing slow but steady.

Aarav sat beside her, not moving, not speaking.

Just… watching.

As if looking away for even a second might make her disappear.

Hours passed.

The sky outside turned from evening to night.

And then—

Meera slowly opened her eyes.

"Aarav…" she whispered.

He immediately leaned closer.

"I'm here."

She gave a small smile.

"You didn't go."

Aarav shook his head gently. "I told you… I won't."

She looked at him for a long moment.

As if memorizing his face.

Every detail.

Every expression.

"Why do you look more tired than me?" she asked softly.

Aarav smiled faintly. "Because someone decided to scare me today."

Meera looked down slightly.

"I'm sorry…"

Aarav stopped her gently.

"No more sorry," he said. "Not for this."

Silence again.

But softer this time.

After a few minutes, Meera spoke again.

"Aarav… can I ask you something?"

"Anything."

She hesitated.

Her fingers tightened around the bedsheet.

As if the words were difficult to say.

"What would you do," she began slowly,

"if you knew… you didn't have much time left?"

Aarav didn't answer immediately.

He thought carefully.

Because this wasn't just a question.

It was something deeper.

"I'd stop waiting," he said finally.

Meera looked at him.

"Waiting for what?"

"For the right moment. For the perfect time. For things to be easier," he replied.

"I'd just… live."

Meera's eyes softened.

"Live how?"

Aarav smiled slightly.

"I'd do everything I was too afraid to do before."

She stayed quiet.

Listening.

Feeling every word.

"And you?" Aarav asked. "What would you do?"

Meera looked away.

At the window.

At the dark sky outside.

"There's a lot," she said softly.

"Like what?"

She hesitated again.

Then slowly—

"I want to see the ocean."

Aarav blinked.

"The ocean?"

She nodded.

"I've never seen it. Just in pictures. Videos…"

She smiled faintly. "People say it feels endless."

Aarav watched her carefully.

There was something in her voice.

Something pure.

Like a small dream she never allowed herself to believe in.

"What else?" he asked gently.

Meera took a deep breath.

"I want to travel somewhere far… where no one knows me."

She paused.

"And… I want to celebrate my birthday properly. Just once."

Aarav frowned slightly. "You've never celebrated it?"

She shook her head.

"Not really. Hospitals don't allow candles and cake," she said, trying to joke.

But it hurt.

Aarav felt it.

Every word.

"And…" she added quietly.

He leaned closer.

"And?"

She looked at him.

Her eyes filled with something deeper now.

Something more emotional.

"I want to fall in love… without being afraid of leaving."

The words stayed in the air.

Heavy.

Honest.

Aarav's heart tightened.

Because he knew—

She wasn't just talking about a wish.

She was talking about him.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Aarav gently reached for her hand.

Held it carefully.

"Then we'll do it," he said.

Meera blinked.

"What?"

"All of it," he continued.

"The ocean. The trip. Your birthday. Everything."

She shook her head immediately.

"No… Aarav, that's not realistic—"

"I don't care," he said softly.

She looked at him, surprised.

"You said you don't have time," he continued.

"Then we won't waste any."

Her eyes filled with tears again.

"You can't fix everything," she whispered.

Aarav smiled gently.

"I'm not trying to fix it."

"Then what are you doing?"

He looked straight into her eyes.

"I'm making sure your story has the ending you deserve."

That broke her.

Completely.

Tears fell freely now.

No hiding.

No pretending.

"You're too good to me," she said through her tears.

Aarav shook his head.

"No… I just see you."

Silence.

Deep.

Emotional.

After a while, Meera spoke again.

But her voice was softer now.

Almost fragile.

"Aarav…"

"Hmm?"

"What if I don't get to do all of it?"

He tightened his grip slightly.

"Then we'll do as much as we can."

"And if I leave before that?"

Aarav paused.

Just for a second.

Then he said something simple.

But powerful.

"Then I'll carry the rest for you."

Meera closed her eyes.

Tears slipping down silently.

For the first time—

She wasn't afraid to hope.

Because someone believed in her dreams.

Even when she couldn't.

Later that night…

As she slowly drifted to sleep—

She whispered something so soft, Aarav almost didn't hear it.

"Aarav…"

"I'm here."

"If I get a little more time…"

He leaned closer.

"I think… I might fall in love with you."

Aarav froze.

His heart raced.

But before he could say anything—

She had already fallen asleep.

Leaving those words behind.

Unfinished.

Uncertain.

But real.

Aarav looked at her for a long time.

A soft smile forming on his face.

"Then I'll make sure you do," he whispered.

Outside, the night was calm.

But inside that small hospital room—

Something had changed.

Not just hope.

Not just dreams.

But love…

Finally beginning to take shape.
