Chapter 3 - Chapter 4: The Promise Under the Stars

That evening stayed with them.

Not because something big happened…

But because something quiet changed.

After that day, Aarav and Meera weren't just two strangers meeting by chance anymore.

They became… something more.

Not defined.

Not labeled.

But real.

The next few days felt lighter.

Meera smiled more.

Not just in the rain.

Not just to hide pain.

But because she wanted to.

And Aarav?

He started laughing again.

Something he hadn't done in a long time.

They met every day.

Same café.

Same corner.

But their conversations were different now.

More open.

More honest.

More them.

One evening, Aarav walked into the café with unusual excitement.

Meera noticed immediately.

"You look suspiciously happy," she said, raising an eyebrow.

Aarav grinned. "I have a plan."

"That sounds dangerous."

"It's not."

"It definitely is," she replied. "What is it?"

Aarav leaned closer. "We're going out tonight."

Meera blinked. "We go out every day."

"No," he said. "Not like this."

An hour later…

They were standing on a quiet hill just outside the city.

The air was cool.

The sky was clear.

And above them—

A blanket of stars.

Meera looked up, her eyes widening slightly.

"It's… beautiful," she whispered.

Aarav watched her reaction carefully.

Worth it.

Completely worth it.

"I used to come here when I needed to think," Aarav said.

Meera glanced at him. "And now?"

He smiled softly. "Now I brought you."

She didn't say anything for a moment.

Just kept looking at the sky.

"You know," she said slowly, "I've never seen the stars this clearly."

"Really?"

She nodded. "Hospitals don't have great views."

That simple sentence carried so much weight.

Aarav felt it.

But he didn't let the mood fall.

Not tonight.

"Then we'll make up for lost time," he said.

Meera smiled faintly. "How?"

"By creating moments better than anything you missed."

She looked at him.

Really looked at him.

"You talk like you have all the time in the world."

Aarav's expression softened.

"No," he said quietly. "I just want to use whatever time we have… properly."

The wind moved gently around them.

The silence felt comfortable.

Not empty.

Not heavy.

Just… right.

After a while, Meera sat down on the grass.

Aarav sat beside her.

Close.

But not too close.

Respecting the space.

Yet sharing it.

"Can I ask you something?" Meera said softly.

"Anything."

She hesitated.

Then—

"Why me?"

Aarav frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"

"You could have met anyone," she said. "Someone normal. Someone who doesn't come with…" she gestured vaguely, "…all this."

Aarav didn't answer immediately.

He thought carefully.

Because this question mattered.

"Do you know what I saw the first day I met you?" he asked.

Meera shook her head.

"I saw someone standing in the rain… smiling."

She looked down slightly.

"But that's not special," she murmured.

"It is," Aarav said. "Because that smile wasn't fake. It was strong."

He continued—

"You felt everything… but still chose to smile. That's not normal, Meera. That's rare."

Her eyes filled with emotion again.

But this time…

They weren't sad tears.

"You make it sound like I'm something amazing," she said quietly.

Aarav smiled.

"You are."

Silence.

But a different kind.

The kind that says more than words.

After a few minutes, Meera lay down on the grass, looking at the stars.

Aarav hesitated.

Then did the same.

Now they were side by side.

Looking at the same sky.

Breathing the same air.

Sharing the same moment.

"Let's make a promise," Meera said suddenly.

Aarav turned his head slightly. "What kind of promise?"

She pointed at the stars.

"Every time we see the night sky like this… no matter where we are… we'll think of each other."

Aarav smiled. "That's easy."

"No," she said softly. "It's not."

He looked at her again.

Her eyes were serious now.

Deep.

Emotional.

"Even if we're apart," she added.

"Even if… I'm not here."

Aarav's heart tightened.

He didn't like where this was going.

"Meera—"

"Just promise me," she interrupted gently.

Aarav took a deep breath.

Then nodded.

"I promise."

She smiled.

That soft, peaceful smile.

The one that felt like home.

"And you?" he asked.

"Of course," she said. "I'll keep it too."

For a moment…

Everything felt perfect.

Like time had paused just for them.

Then—

Meera slowly reached out her hand.

Not fully.

Just enough.

Aarav looked at it.

Then at her.

Then—

He held it.

No words.

No hesitation.

Just a simple touch.

But it meant everything.

Her hand was cold.

But her grip was warm.

"Your hands are freezing," Aarav said.

Meera smiled. "Then don't let go."

He didn't.

They stayed like that for a long time.

Under the stars.

Holding hands.

Saying nothing.

Feeling everything.

That night wasn't about grand confessions.

Or dramatic moments.

It was about something softer.

Something deeper.

Two hearts…

Slowly learning how to belong.

As they walked back, Meera suddenly stopped.

"Aarav?"

"Yeah?"

She looked at him.

A little nervous.

A little unsure.

"I'm glad… I met you."

Aarav smiled.

"Me too."

But what neither of them said out loud was—

This was just the beginning.

Because love…

When it finally starts…

Doesn't ask how long it will last.

It just begins.
