Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Forge of the Void

The Void Time-Dilation zone was a world without color. It was a pocket dimension created by the System, where the laws of the outside world didn't apply. Here, the sky was a swirling vortex of charcoal clouds, and the ground was made of obsidian sand that shifted like liquid under Su Lan's feet.

[Ding! Time-Dilation Active. Ratio: 1 day = 1 month.]

[Warning: The Void environment is hostile to human meridians. Continuous use will cause extreme pain.]

Su Lan sat cross-legged in the center of the vortex. Around her lay the mountain of spirit stones she had plundered from the Cloud Mist Sect's treasury. In the outside world, these stones were worth a fortune; here, they were merely fuel.

"Pain is the only thing that reminds me I'm still alive, System," Su Lan said, her voice raspy. "Start the refinement."

[Initiating Void Heart Refinement. Objective: Reconstruct the Dantian.]

Suddenly, the black energy within her body began to rotate in the opposite direction. It felt as if a thousand jagged glass shards were being dragged through her veins. Su Lan's skin turned a ghostly translucent white, and black veins began to spider-web across her neck and forehead. She let out a silent scream, her head thrown back as her old, damaged meridians were systematically snapped and reforged by the System's power.

In her previous life, she had been taught that cultivation was a "conversation with nature." You were supposed to be gentle, to flow like water. But the System taught her a different truth: Cultivation was a war. You didn't ask the universe for power; you conquered it.

As the weeks passed in the Void, Su Lan didn't eat or sleep. Every time her consciousness began to fade, the System would shock her soul back to awareness.

"I cannot fall here," she whispered to herself, her fingers digging into the obsidian sand. "Lin Yue is currently wearing my spiritual root. She is sleeping in a warm bed, being praised as a Saintess. If I sleep, she wins."

That thought was more effective than any medicinal pill.

By the third month of her internal "year," Su Lan's body had reached a breaking point. Her old skin began to peel away in large flakes, revealing new skin that shimmered with a faint, metallic luster. It was the Void Devouring Body reaching its first stage of completion.

She stood up and picked up the Heaven-Slaying Sword. The blade was no longer rusty; it had become a sliver of pure darkness that seemed to drink the light around it.

"System, simulate an opponent," Su Lan commanded.

[Ding! Generating Combat Illusion: 'Senior Brother' Ye Chen (Foundation Establishment Level 5).]

A shimmering image of Ye Chen appeared across from her. He looked exactly as he did on the day of the betrayal—arrogant, handsome, and holding his glowing Solar Sword.

"Su Lan, you're just a waste," the illusion sneered, programmed with the memories Su Lan had of him. "Give up and die quietly."

Su Lan didn't respond with words. Her eyes, now completely purple without any white showing, locked onto the target.

"Void Step."

She vanished. In the outside world, she would have looked like a blur. Here, she simply ceased to exist in one spot and appeared in another. Before the Ye Chen illusion could even raise his sword, Su Lan was behind him.

She didn't use a flashy move. She simply swung the Heaven-Slaying Sword in a horizontal arc.

Shred.

The illusion was cleaved in two, but the cut wasn't clean. The edges of the illusion's "body" began to dissolve into black smoke, sucked into Su Lan's blade.

[Ding! Combat Simulation Complete. Time: 0.8 seconds.]

[Evaluation: Perfect. You have mastered the 'Instant Kill' intent.]

"Not enough," Su Lan said, looking at her hands. "Ye Chen is just a dog. I need to be able to kill the Master. I need to be able to slaughter the entire Sect."

She sat back down. The mountain of spirit stones had shrunk by half.

[Ding! Entering 6th Month of Training.]

[Current Realm: Foundation Establishment Level 8.]

[New Skill Unlocked: 'Soul-Searching Claw'—Extract memories and energy from living targets.]

Su Lan closed her eyes and began to circulate the Void Path Manual. This time, she didn't just pull energy from the stones; she began to pull energy from the Void itself. The grey clouds above began to spiral downward, forming a funnel that entered the top of her head.

Her Dantian, once a broken mess, was now a swirling galaxy of black and purple. At the center, a small, hard seed was forming. This was the precursor to a Golden Core.

As the "year" moved toward its end, Su Lan's aura became increasingly terrifying. If a normal cultivator had walked into this space, they would have been suffocated by the sheer weight of her killing intent.

On the final day of her training, Su Lan opened her eyes. The last of the 50,000 spirit stones turned to dust and blew away in the wind.

She stood up and stretched. Her movements were fluid, like a panther. She was no longer the fragile, hardworking disciple who wanted everyone to like her. She was a weapon.

[Ding! 12 Months Complete. Returning to Real-World Time.]

[Final Status Check:]

Realm: Foundation Establishment Level 10 (Peak/Great Circle).

Physical Body: Void Devouring Grade 1.

Weapon Mastery: Heaven-Slaying Sword (30% Sync).

Su Lan felt the world around her shatter like glass. The grey sky and obsidian sand vanished, replaced by the damp, cold walls of the cave behind the waterfall.

Outside, it had only been 12 days. The sun was just beginning to rise over the Cloud Mist Sect.

Su Lan walked to the edge of the waterfall and looked out at the distant peaks. She could see the flags of the other four sects arriving for the competition. The air was filled with the sound of celebratory drums.

She reached up and touched the scar on her abdomen. It was gone, but the memory of the blade was as fresh as ever.

"The stage is set," Su Lan whispered. Her voice was no longer raspy; it was clear and cold, like a bell tolling for a funeral. "Lin Yue, I hope you enjoyed my spiritual root. Because when I take it back, I'm going to pull your soul out with it."

She stepped out of the cave, not as a survivor, but as a predator.
