Chapter 9 - Quarter Final- Eternal Night Arena

The Eternal Night Arena loaded with a dramatic sweep of darkness. Towering stone pillars rose under a starless sky, faint moonlight filtering through cracks in the ancient dome. Long, inky shadows stretched across the cracked marble floor — the perfect hunting ground for Yun Qing's Void Shadow class. The air felt heavier here, charged with the tension of a proper tournament match.

Yun Qing's heart beat steadily in his chest as he spawned beside Ling Feng. In the real world, his small apartment was silent except for the low hum of the cheap VR helmet. His palms were slightly damp against the controls, but his mind was sharp, assassin instincts fully awake.

Their opponents were no pushovers: "Blaze Duo" — a Level 38 fire mage known for explosive area damage and a Level 36 assassin who favored aggressive, close-range burst tactics. They had dominated their previous brackets with flashy, overwhelming offense.

Ling Feng's voice came through the private voice chat, calm and focused. "They'll try to burst one of us down fast. I'll draw aggro and control the center. You take the shadows on the left flank. Wait for my signal."

"Understood," Yun Qing replied, his own voice low and steady. He could already visualize the flow of the fight — the way the enemy assassin would overextend, the mage's predictable casting patterns.

The countdown hit zero.

The Blaze Duo charged aggressively from the start. The fire mage opened with a roaring flame wall that split the arena, trying to isolate Yun Qing from Ling Feng. Heat radiated through the VR sensory feedback, making sweat bead on Yun Qing's real forehead.

Ling Feng moved like a fortress. He activated his signature control skills — a wide-area slow zone combined with a taunt that pulled both enemies toward him. Flames licked at his silver-black gear, but his health bar barely dipped thanks to solid positioning and tanky stats.

Yun Qing didn't hesitate. He activated Shadow Step, his form blurring and fading into the long shadows cast by the pillars. The world dimmed to shades of gray as he became nearly invisible, moving with the silent grace of a predator who had once stalked rooftops in pouring rain.

He circled wide, keeping low. The enemy assassin — a cocky player with flashy red accents on his gear — broke off from Ling Feng and lunged toward where he thought the "weak rookie" was hiding.

Big mistake.

Yun Qing waited until the assassin committed to a leaping strike, then struck from behind with perfect timing. Shadow Burst exploded in a wave of dark energy, followed by a chain of precise dagger strikes targeting joints and vital points his muscle memory remembered from real kills. Critical hit after critical hit flashed across the screen.

The enemy assassin's health plummeted. "What the—?! Where did he come from?!" he shouted over open chat, voice cracking with surprise.

The fire mage tried to swing around to help, launching a barrage of fireballs. Ling Feng intercepted smoothly, using a crowd-control root to lock the mage in place while shielding Yun Qing from the worst of the damage.

"Nice," Ling Feng said quietly through their private channel, genuine admiration threading his tone. "Keep the pressure. I've got the mage."

Their synergy clicked even tighter than before. The upgraded Shadow-Ice Link triggered repeatedly, reducing cooldowns and letting Yun Qing chain bursts faster while Ling Feng's controls became more oppressive. Yun Qing used a newly unlocked shadow clone to distract the mage, drawing aggro just long enough for Ling Feng to land a heavy stun.

The enemy assassin tried a desperate counter — a spinning blade flurry aimed at Yun Qing's back. Yun Qing dodged with unnatural smoothness, body remembering years of evading real bullets and knives. He countered with a feint that looked like an opening, then pivoted into a lethal backstab that finished the assassin.

One down.

The fire mage panicked, overcasting a massive flame explosion in a last-ditch effort to take Ling Feng with him. Ling Feng tanked the hit, health dropping into the red zone, but held firm.

Yun Qing emerged from the shadows like death incarnate, delivering the final Shadow Burst combo. The mage's screams cut off as his health bar hit zero.

Victory screen exploded in golden light.

[Quarterfinal Victory!]

[Advancing to Semifinals]

[Duo Synergy Rating: Legendary – Major bonus rewards unlocked: Rare skill fragment for both + temporary stat boost]

The crowd in the spectator chat went wild. Messages flooded the tournament channel:

"WHO IS THAT ROOKIE?! His movement is insane!"

"Ice Emperor actually smiled?! What kind of duo is this?!"

"Shadow + Ice is broken!"

In the private victory lobby, Ling Feng's avatar turned fully toward Yun Qing. The usual icy composure had cracked slightly — his silver-gray eyes held a warmth that made Yun Qing's chest tighten unexpectedly.

"You were incredible out there," Ling Feng said, voice softer than Yun Qing had ever heard it. "That last counter… it wasn't just game skill. You fight like your life depends on it. Every time."

Yun Qing exhaled slowly, the adrenaline still buzzing. In real life, he wiped sweat from his brow. "Old habits."

Ling Feng was quiet for a long moment. Then he spoke again, careful and sincere. "Yun Qing… after the semifinals tomorrow, let's meet. The café I mentioned — 'Midnight Brew' near the central station. Private VR pods in the back. We can review footage, talk strategy… or just talk. No pressure. I just… want to see the person who's been matching me step for step."

The invitation felt heavier now, more real. Yun Qing's mind flashed to rainy rooftops and the sting of betrayal. Trust had nearly killed him once. But Ling Feng's steady presence — the way he adapted, protected, and genuinely seemed to care about the synergy they were building — chipped away at those old walls.

In his tiny apartment, Yun Qing stared at the ceiling, heart pounding for reasons that had nothing to do with the tournament.

"…If we win semifinals," he said finally, voice barely above a whisper, "I'll be there."

Ling Feng's soft, relieved chuckle came through the chat. It sounded warmer than any victory screen. "Then we win semifinals. See you on the arena tomorrow — and hopefully, in person soon after."

As the lobby timer counted down for the next waiting period, Yun Qing felt the line between game and reality blurring faster.

The Shadow Emperor was no longer just surviving.

He was starting to hope.
