Chapter 8 - Rising Stakes

Stakes

The Crystal Caverns map glowed with eerie blue crystals that cast shifting light and deep shadows — ideal for Yun Qing's Void Shadow class. Their second-round opponents were sharper: a Level 35 elementalist and a sturdy tank who specialized in area denial.

As soon as the match began, the enemy tank slammed down a wide earthen wall, trying to split Yun Qing and Ling Feng apart.

"Stay with me," Ling Feng said through voice chat, his tone steady and commanding. He charged forward, using his control skills to break the wall and draw both enemies' attention.

Yun Qing didn't need further instruction. He slipped into the flickering shadows between crystals, becoming a ghost once more.

The elementalist launched a barrage of ice shards toward Ling Feng. Ling Feng tanked the hits with minimal damage, positioning himself perfectly to limit the enemies' movement.

Yun Qing struck from behind — Shadow Burst exploding against the elementalist's back, followed by rapid dagger strikes that exploited every weak point his assassin instincts spotted. The elementalist staggered, health dropping fast.

"Behind us!" the tank shouted, turning to help.

Too late.

Ling Feng's root skill locked the tank in place. Yun Qing finished the elementalist with a clean shadow-enhanced critical, then pivoted seamlessly to assist on the tank.

Their synergy felt almost telepathic now. Ling Feng created openings; Yun Qing exploited them with lethal precision. The match ended in five minutes flat.

In the victory lobby, Ling Feng's avatar lingered. His silver eyes seemed brighter through the screen.

"You're getting better every match," he said quietly. "Or maybe you were always this good and just hiding it."

Yun Qing wiped a bead of sweat from his brow in real life. The praise felt strangely warm. "We make a good team."

Ling Feng hummed in agreement. "The best I've had in a long time."

A short silence fell. Then Ling Feng added, softer, "After the quarterfinals… that coffee. I meant it. There's a quiet café with private VR pods. We could review the matches together. No crowds, no pressure."

Yun Qing's pulse quickened. The idea of meeting the man behind the Ice Emperor — tall, composed, with those piercing silver-gray eyes in real life — both terrified and pulled at him.

In his past life, trust had gotten him killed.

Here, it felt like the only thing worth risking.

"I'll consider it," Yun Qing replied, voice carefully neutral. "If we make semifinals."

Ling Feng's soft chuckle came through the chat. "Then we'd better make semifinals."

The quarterfinal match loaded next — against a highly coordinated duo that had been favorites to win the bracket. As the map (Eternal Night Arena) appeared, Yun Qing felt the stakes rising.

But with Ling Feng fighting beside him, the shadows felt a little less lonely.

And the Ice Emperor's quiet presence was slowly thawing something deep inside the former Shadow Emperor.
