Chapter 11 - Separate Paths and Hidden Recommendations

The morning light filtered through the thin curtains of the inn room, painting the wooden floor in soft gold. Kai stood by the window, already dressed in his black assassin leathers, hood resting on his shoulders. The small glowing orb of Seraphiel pulsed quietly against his chest like a second heartbeat. Lyra was still in bed, propped up against the pillows, her bandaged shoulder and ribs making every movement stiff. She watched him with narrowed crimson eyes.

You're leaving, she said. It wasn't a question.

Kai turned to face her. His expression was calm, but his purple eyes held a quiet resolve.

I need to move alone for a while. The city is crawling with guards and bounty hunters. If we stay together, they'll connect us faster. I'll scout the academy perimeter and see how bad the situation really is.

Lyra sat up too quickly and winced, pressing a hand to her side. Her ponytail was messy from sleep, but the fire in her gaze was as sharp as ever.

You're an idiot if you think I'm just going to sit here while you walk into the lion's den alone. I should be with you.

You're injured, Lioness. Kai's voice was gentle but firm. You're still bleeding under those bandages. If we get into a real fight, I'll be too busy worrying about you to focus. Let me handle this part.

Lyra's jaw tightened. She hated the words, hated the truth in them even more. For a long moment she stared at him, the fiery thread between them pulsing with frustration and something much deeper.

Fine, she finally growled, voice rough with reluctance. But if you get yourself killed or captured, I swear I'll drag your sorry ass back from whatever hell you end up in and kill you myself.

Kai stepped closer to the bed. He reached out and brushed a stray strand of crimson hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering just a second longer than necessary.

I'll be back before nightfall. Try not to burn the inn down while I'm gone.

Lyra grabbed the front of his jacket with her good hand and yanked him down until their faces were inches apart. Her breath was warm against his lips.

You'd better come back, she whispered fiercely, full of heat and worry. I hate you for making me worry like this.

Kai smirked, then leaned in and pressed a slow, teasing kiss to the corner of her mouth — dangerously close to the real thing. Lyra's breath hitched, her fingers tightening on his jacket. Before she could react or pull him closer, he pulled away and slipped out the door, hood rising over his head.

The moment the door clicked shut, Lyra slammed her fist into the mattress.

Damn it… you stupid shadow freak.

She dressed as quickly as her wounds allowed, ignoring the sharp pain that flared with every movement. She couldn't just sit here waiting. Not while Kai was walking straight into the most dangerous place in the city. There was only one person who might be able to help without getting them both killed.

The academy director.

Lyra left the inn and made her way through the crowded streets toward Valoria Academy. Every guard she passed made her fingers itch for her axes. By the time she reached the grand marble gates, her shoulder was throbbing badly, but her determination burned hotter than the pain.

The director's office was on the top floor of the central tower. Lyra burst in without knocking. The silver-haired man looked up from his desk, eyebrows raised in mild surprise.

Lady Voss. To what do I owe this… unannounced visit?

Lyra didn't waste time with pleasantries. She planted both hands on his desk and leaned forward, ignoring the stab of pain.

I need you to listen to me. Kai Ren — the one everyone is calling the Fatebreaker — is not what they say he is. He saved lives in that dungeon when he could have let good people die for more power. He chose mercy. He's different. He deserves a real chance.

The director leaned back in his chair, studying her carefully.

You're asking me to recommend a wanted criminal for the academy's scholarship program? The same program reserved for talented students from lesser families?

I'm asking you to give him a way back in without the whole city trying to kill him on sight, Lyra said fiercely. Put him in the scholarship group. He'll prove himself. I'll vouch for him personally.

The director was quiet for a long moment, fingers tapping lightly on the desk.

You realize what you're risking, Lady Voss? Your own family name. Your future. If this goes wrong, I won't be able to protect either of you.

I know exactly what I'm risking, she replied without hesitation, eyes burning. And I'm doing it anyway.

The director sighed deeply, then nodded once.

Very well. I will submit a recommendation for Kai Ren to join the scholarship program under my personal oversight. But know this — if he causes even the slightest disturbance, I will have no choice but to withdraw it.

Lyra's shoulders relaxed just a fraction.

Thank you.

She turned to leave, but paused at the door.

One more thing. If anyone asks… you never saw me here.

The director allowed himself a small, tired smile.

Of course.

Outside the academy, Kai had found a quiet rooftop overlooking the central plaza. He sat with his back against a chimney, hood low, watching the flow of students and guards below. Wanted posters with his face were everywhere.

He closed his eyes and spoke mentally.

System. Can I use the Gacha again?

The system responded almost immediately, its voice smooth and slightly amused.

Negative, Host. Gacha cooldown is now active. Due to your recent rapid evolution and the formation of a divine pact with Seraphiel, the system requires a one-week stabilization period before the next draw can be safely performed. This prevents excessive power accumulation that could destabilize your fate threads.

Kai frowned. One week? That's inconvenient.

It is a necessary balance, the system continued. Each future Gacha use will now require an additional 1,000 Fate Points as a stabilization fee. This cost will increase gradually with further draws to maintain equilibrium. Current Fate Points: 21,620.

Kai exhaled slowly, a small smile forming. Good. He didn't want to become so overwhelmingly powerful that the story lost all tension.

Understood. Keep me updated on the cooldown.

He opened his eyes and looked back toward the academy towers. Somewhere inside those walls, Lyra was probably doing something reckless on his behalf. The thought made the corner of his mouth lift.

Meanwhile, Lyra stepped back into the bustling academy grounds, the pain in her shoulder flaring again. She gritted her teeth and kept walking. She had done what she could. Now she just had to wait for Kai to return so she could yell at him for making her worry… and maybe drag him somewhere private where she could stop pretending she only hated him.

Kai felt the fiery thread between them pulse stronger than ever. He stood up, adjusted his hood, and began making his way back toward the inn through the shadowed alleys.

The game was changing again.

The gods were watching.

And somewhere in the heart of Valoria Academy, a small but important door had just cracked open for the Fatebreaker.
