Chapter 36 - Numerical Dehumanization

Eerie silence emanated throughout the room. With every new person getting thrown in, it for some reason just kept staying silent. Lukas watched as all sorts of people were filed into a bunk bed. There were some guys with fully shaved heads, others with tattoos all over their bodies, and some with missing body parts for some reason.

They all just sat on their assigned bunk beds, and never said a word to anyone else. Just like Drew and Lukas.

Lukas in particular, was getting unbelievably bored with himself and his thoughts. It had already been over an hour since he'd gotten here, and the only thing he's thinking about is when they're actually gonna start working. Anything to escape from the boredom seemed to be good enough for him. Until then, he just sat there, staring at the crusty ceiling tiles, and the alarm that looked like it was moving. Lukas didn't know if it was an optical illusion or not; but frankly, he couldn't care less.

Some guy two rows away from the two, started to violently cough his brains out. His mucus and some blood were getting all over the place, and most of the guys were trying their best to not get hit in the process. It took them a while, but some officer guys rushed in, grabbed him by the shoulders, and rushed him out. Once he saw them coming, he started shaking and pleading for them to spare him. That wasn't in their job description though.

They all watched in horror, as this full grown man was crying while being hoisted away like some sort of little kid.

"Holy shit…" Lukas whispered to himself, not knowing that Drew heard him too.

"I know right…" he replied, catching the attention of Lukas.

"What happened to you there…?" Lukas asked. "You kinda spaced out on me…" He moved his body to look at him on the bottom bunk. He was still at Lukas' mattress, doing nothing else. The only thing that changed is his mouth moving.

"Oh me… it's nothing… I was just thinking about our situation…" Lukas could tell that wasn't the only thing he was thinking about. Lukas wondered what they could've told him in the room that was right next to his own. He positioned himself onto his back once again, and started to stare at the ceiling once more.

*BEEP!

*BEEP!

*BEEP!

They both sat up in an instant, looking at the alarm to see it finally glowing and beeping. Signaling that it was work time. The rest of them hopped out of their beds like clockwork. Getting into rows, walking in single file lines, the whole thing! The doors also slowly inched their way open, just as the first guy made it there.

Behind said door, were around 3-4 officers who were in full gear; with riot shields, AR-15's, and a pretty chunky vest for who knows what.

Lukas and Drew got up, and waited somewhere near the back. When they got into line, they were right behind someone with long hair, kind of like how Lukas has his, just if his hair was black instead of brown. He also had on a jacket and some ripped jeans on, kind of making him look like a nicotine junkie you'd find behind a gas station at 3 in the morning. Especially with how matted it was. Looking like he almost had an afro of some kind.

The guy turns around after feeling Lukas' stare on his back. He sees the both of them, and gives them a wave before turning right back and continuing walking. The two of them make it past the door, and after they start walking through the lengthy hallway; that's when the officers start to move with them.

Everyone felt as if they were robots of some sort, with them moving in such a way that the untrained eye could think they were a part of B.O.B. With how Lukas and Drew were both thinking at the moment, they might as well be.

The light coming from the outside, slowly seeped through the opened door. As they all got closer, the light got brighter and brighter, to the point where it almost felt blinding at some point. They weren't allowed to stop and breathe though, so they all just had to tough it out in the end.

Lukas was astonished at what he saw once he fully stepped outside. It looked like some sort of work camp, with a bunch of different things to slave away at while your body tires itself to the point of no return.

"Alright you scum of the earth! You will all go by numbers now! Your names don't matter!" some guy with a tuxedo on said using a huge megaphone. "You can also use the term Stancer when referring to each other! But at all costs, never use someone's name!" He sounded super serious with that last one. Everyone just agreed with no fight whatsoever; including both Lukas and Drew. "Now all of you, come up and draw a name from this box! Everyone will be calling you this from now on!" They all lined up immediately.

Once it was Lukas' turn, he pulls out a piece of paper that said: #26 in big numbers. There also seemed to be a 5 right below it though, which the guy with the megaphone didn't specify on.

Lukas and Drew were looking at the numbers they both got. Drew got #31 with a 4 right below it as well.

"Oh fuck! I almost forgot!" The megaphone guy stumbled back onto the stool that he was using. "The number below your new name is where you'll be working for the rest of your life!" He said it so casually. Lukas and Drew both were concerned, now how were they supposed to talk while working?

Lukas in the corner of his eye, saw that the person that was in front of him, his name number was #28, and somehow he got the same number as him for where they would be working. The guy saw him looking, and stepped closer to read what his note said.

"Wow! We got to the same place huh…" #28 said. With Lukas just nodding his head in agreement.

"Alright! You all got your numbers, so go to the area that you've been assigned to!" he shouted. "And if any one of us sees one of you guys trying to slack off, leave, and try to sabotage anyone else. You don't wanna know what will be your consequences…" he said while giving a very stern facial expression, setting everyone else into line.
