Chapter 56 - 56

"People in love are not bound by destiny, but by memories."That is exactly what had happened between Kavya and Arjun. They loved each other deeply, yet they had never tried to clench their relationship tightly in their fists. Their love was not about possession; it was an act of quiet acceptance. It carried no burden of expectations, only the open window of trust. They were together, yet never as each other's shadows. Both understood that love remains alive only when there is enough space left for the individual to breathe.

Even within their relationship, they had preserved the freedom to hold onto their thoughts, silences, confusions, dreams, and private worlds. There was distance between them too, but it never became a wall, it remained a peaceful pause for self-reflection.

Arjun had never made Kavya the center of his stubbornness, nor had Kavya ever imposed her desires upon him. There was no race to dominate, no game of control. They both knew that love kept forcibly bound slowly begins to suffocate. And so, they had held each other not by gripping tightly, but by truly understanding one another.

Their communication was not merely of words, but of emotions. Disagreements occurred, yet they were never laced with bitterness. They respected each other's boundaries as if that respect itself formed the very foundation of their bond.

Kavya's silence never became suspicion for Arjun, and Arjun's solitude never felt like neglect to Kavya.Perhaps that was why their relationship remained far from noise and clamor, yet rich with profound depth. There was love, but no sense of ownership; there was closeness, but no suffocation; there was companionship wrapped in freedom. This mutual respect, this delicate balance, made their love extraordinary—quietly human in the most beautiful way.

It was precisely Arjun's distance and uncertainty that kept deepening the space he occupied in Kavya's heart. Sometimes, Kavya would wonder,"Does he think about me as much as I think about him?"

And hidden within that very question was the quiet magnetism, the invisible pull that kept drawing her back to him again and again.

Arjun, too, understood the meaning behind her every silence, yet he never tried to trap her in reassurances. He came as close to her as she herself allowed him to.

This time, they were meeting after a full year's gap, at this quiet café. It had been a year in which time had taken away much, and taught them even more. Life had not stood still; events had unfolded silently, leaving their marks upon their hearts. Seated at a corner table, the steaming cups of coffee seemed to bear witness to the emotions buried within them. Amid the bustle outside, a gentle silence enveloped their space.

With a soft smile, Kavya said, "Today, the bill is on me, because I'm the one who called you here."There was a touch of formality in her voice, yet something unspoken lingered in her eyes.

Arjun looked at her carefully. For a moment, it felt as though he was searching for the Kavya he once knew. The girl sitting before him had changed subtly with time. He asked, trying to sound casual, "Tell me, why did you call me?"

After a brief pause, he added, "Was there something important?"The question was simple, yet behind it lay layers of distance, unfinished conversations, and many unspoken truths.

Kavya held her coffee cup a little tighter, as if steadying herself before the words came. She knew that what she was about to say was not just the reason for this meeting—it might very well decide the future direction of their relationship.

"Yes," she said. "I have cleared the NET exam. I'm going to BHU to pursue research in Forensic Science. Before leaving, I just wanted to meet you. I don't know when I'll be able to come back again. I topped the exam in Forensic Science this year."

Arjun looked at her for a few moments, as if trying to read the emotions hidden behind her words. Then a faint shadow of self-reproach entered his voice."Congratulations, Kavya.

Many, many congratulations," he said softly. "Sorry… I had no idea. If I had known, I would have brought you a bouquet."As he spoke, his gaze dropped, as though this apology was not merely for not bringing flowers, but for so many unvoiced things that Kavya had endured because of him.

Then, suddenly, a note of fear and vulnerability crept into his voice. "So, you're leaving me too?"

It was not really a question—it was an apprehension, a deep-seated fear that had long been buried within him and had finally found words today.

Kavya remained silent for a while, then took a deep breath, as if gathering the words rising inside her. There was no haste in her eyes, no harshness—only a calm, settled resolve.

"No, Arjun," she said gently but clearly. "I'm going because I won't be able to give you my complete time anymore."

Her words were not a complaint, but an honest admission. She continued, "Even here, we have been in a long-distance relationship for a long time. We were close, yet distant—because of responsibilities, circumstances, or lack of time, whatever the reason.

It will remain the same even after I go there. At least it will give our relationship a chance to be tested, to endure. Her gaze drifted to the window, where people moved along the street. "I don't want our relationship to keep carrying the burden of waiting and incomplete moments," she said.

"I also don't want you to feel guilt every day, remembering me while knowing I'm here yet not truly present with you."

There was love in her voice, but also a deep pain—the kind that is born not from leaving someone, but from trying to save them from breaking.

"We are already as far apart here as we would be if I went away," she said softly. "Then what is the point in holding on, Arjun?

Let us flow in our own directions. Where the destination lies—perhaps destiny will decide."
