Chapter 75 - Varys the Troublemaker

Only after entering the city did Drogon truly understand why the gates were closed during the day.

Meereen was in complete chaos.

The once orderly streets had become battlegrounds. Wealthy Great Masters and free citizens, along with their retainers, were clashing fiercely with former slaves.

People shoved, kicked, and wrestled each other, hurling stones picked up from the ground. Fortunately, no one seemed to be carrying weapons; otherwise, the streets would already have been running with blood.

Tyrion, Shireen, and Shae stared at the fighting crowds in shock.

From a distance, Meereen had looked peaceful and tranquil. None of them had imagined they would find such disorder once inside.

The wagon could no longer move through the streets.

Drogon had already guessed part of the reason behind the unrest. Seeing that the road was blocked, he flew ahead of the wagon and released a loud, thunderous roar at the fighting crowd.

The sound immediately drew everyone's attention upward.

Seeing the smoke and sparks billowing from Drogon's mouth, both sides instantly fell silent.

Very few people knew that Drogon could change his size.

Many residents of Meereen—and even throughout Slaver's Bay—believed Daenerys possessed four dragons: three large ones and one small one.

Even Varys had once mistakenly believed she owned four dragons. Only after his "little birds" conducted careful investigations did he learn that Drogon could transform.

People had occasionally witnessed three dragons fighting—two large and one small—and had also seen three giant dragons appear during Daenerys's assault on the city. The largest of them had seemed bigger than the other two combined.

Although Drogon currently appeared small, nobody dared underestimate him.

Many had seen him fight the other dragons and knew he was no weaker than they were.

Hearing his angry roar, the crowd immediately stopped fighting and hurriedly cleared a path for the wagon.

Not long afterward, two powerful dragon cries echoed from the sky.

Rhaegal and Viserion had heard Drogon's roar and flown over.

They wanted to see what their leader had been doing these past few days.

They had grown uneasy without him. Not seeing Drogon for several days had left them anxious, and now that they knew he had returned, they rushed to find him.

Watching the two massive dragons circle overhead, Tyrion finally felt the true majesty of dragons.

Compared to them, little Drogon seemed insignificant in terms of visual impact.

Shireen and Shae had also stepped out of the carriage and stood staring up at the enormous beasts soaring through the sky.

"I've been too busy to train you lately. Once things calm down, I'll make up for the lessons you've missed."

Watching the pair fly joyfully overhead, Drogon was already planning their future training.

The citizens below had completely forgotten about their brawl.

No one knew whether Rhaegal and Viserion had come under Daenerys's orders.

If the dragons were displeased by the fighting and decided to breathe fire, everyone present would be doomed.

The group eventually reached the Great Pyramid where Daenerys lived.

After Tyrion and the others climbed down from the wagon, Drogon instructed the guards to wait outside and led the trio into the pyramid.

Daenerys wasn't in her private chambers, so Drogon guided them toward the council chamber instead.

The guards there recognized Drogon and opened the doors without objection.

Inside, Daenerys was anxiously discussing Meereen's current troubles with her advisers.

When the doors opened and Drogon entered with one man and two women—a dwarf, a beautiful woman, and a little girl whose face still bore the marks of illness—the entire room fell silent.

The combination was undeniably strange.

Had Drogon not brought them personally, everyone might have assumed they had wandered into the wrong room.

When Tyrion noticed the puzzled looks from both Daenerys and Barristan, a terrible realization struck him.

They didn't know he was coming.

Even someone as thick-skinned as Tyrion felt awkward.

During his journey, he had imagined many possible receptions.

Would Daenerys despise him because he was a Lannister?

Would she treat him with suspicion?

Would she offer him a position?

Never had he imagined arriving to discover that nobody had even been informed of his visit.

"Lord Tyrion, why didn't you send word ahead?" Barristan finally broke the silence.

"I would certainly have gone out to welcome you."

Before speaking, Barristan had glanced at Daenerys and noticed her expression mirrored his own.

She clearly hadn't known about Tyrion's arrival either.

Tyrion felt somewhat helpless.

After a moment's thought, he replied:

"I heard the Mother of Dragons was in Meereen, so I came."

Inside, however, he was cursing Varys repeatedly.

That scheming old spider!

However Varys had communicated with his mysterious contacts, he had apparently failed to notify anyone that Tyrion was coming to pledge his service.

For a former Hand of the King, this was deeply embarrassing.

[I was the one who brought them here!]

Drogon quickly spoke to Daenerys through their mental connection.

He could see the awkwardness in the room and worried she might reject the newcomers.

His original plan had been to introduce them privately.

Today's riots had forced him to bring them directly into the council chamber.

Daenerys already knew a great deal about Tyrion.

Long ago, after hearing about him from Drogon, she had asked Barristan about the former Hand of the King.

She learned that Tyrion had governed King's Landing efficiently during his tenure.

He had personally commanded the city's defenses during the Battle of the Blackwater and held off Stannis's assault until Tywin's reinforcements arrived.

Though she hated Jaime Lannister for killing her father, King Aerys, and extended that hatred to House Lannister as a whole, she still admired Tyrion.

A dwarf who had risen to become Hand of the King, stood on the walls in battle, and nearly died defending his city deserved respect.

Combined with the fact that Drogon himself had brought Tyrion here, Daenerys quickly relaxed.

She smiled and nodded at him.

Seeing that she did not immediately judge him for being a Lannister, Tyrion finally felt some relief.

Tyrion was not the only uncomfortable one.

After realizing Daenerys had not expected her arrival either, Shireen felt uneasy.

After all, her uncle Robert Baratheon had killed Daenerys's brother Rhaegar and seized the Iron Throne.

As a Baratheon, she doubted she would be welcomed warmly.

Meanwhile, Shae had never before stood before so many powerful people.

The attention made her painfully aware of her background, and she worried someone might discover who she really was.

Barristan continued the introductions.

"If I'm not mistaken, this young lady is Shireen Baratheon, daughter of Lord Stannis."

"Your Grace," Shireen quickly said, performing a flawless curtsy.
