Chapter 47 - A Purple Wedding

 "Look! Our grand cake!"

Just as the uncle and nephew were locked in a tense standoff, Little Rose broke the stalemate. Joffrey's attention shifted as several servants wheeled in a massive cake.

After the cake was cut, Little Rose offered him the first bite. As Tyrion and Sansa were about to leave, Joffrey suddenly called out, "Would my dear uncle watch me choke to death?"

Tyrion had no choice but to approach and pour a goblet of red wine for Joffrey.

After taking a few sips, Joffrey opened his mouth to call Tyrion over for more wine, but no words came out. He could only cough violently.

Tyrion was the first to notice something was wrong. He turned to a nearby servant and said, "Go fetch the maester immediately."

Others gradually realized the gravity of the situation. Joffrey was no longer just coughing; he seemed to be choking, unable to catch his breath.

Little Rose, holding the cake, was at a loss. Being closest to Joffrey, she knew he wasn't choking—something else was preventing him from breathing.

Varys, who had been watching the farce with a dark expression, also noticed Joffrey's abnormality. A sense of dread washed over him. "Could this... could this be the great upheaval in King's Landing the mysterious man spoke of?"

He never imagined that the so-called great upheaval would turn out to be the murder of the King of the Seven Kingdoms. On the stands, Cersei had already rushed down from the main guest platform, clutching Joffrey and wailing uncontrollably.

Tyrion silently walked over and picked up Joffrey's fallen golden goblet, which still held the wine he had poured for him.

"It's him! He's the one who murdered the king! Guards! Seize him!" Cersei, cradling Joffrey's lifeless body—his eyes bulging, his face purple and bruised, his breath extinguished—glared venomously at Tyrion, her voice a piercing shriek.

Below, Varys watched Tyrion surrender without resistance, his breathing quickening. Could all this be the work of the mysterious figure? Poisoning Joffrey, framing Tyrion, and forcing him to pledge allegiance to Queen Daenerys!

The more Varys thought about it, the more terrifying it seemed. He was deeply wary of the mysterious figure's methods.

He immediately suspected the mysterious figure was the mastermind behind this. Despite his extensive investigations into the "King's Landing upheaval," he had found no clues. This only proved the plan's secrecy—only the planner could have known about it in advance.

Varys sat down and carefully observed the guests around him, searching for the one who had executed this plan. He didn't believe for a moment that Tyrion would poison Joffrey.

Just then, he noticed a portly server approach Sansa, take her arm, and lead her away. Sansa seemed to recognize the server and, after a moment's hesitation, slipped away from her seat amidst the chaos.

Varys watched Sansa being led away without rising to intervene. He didn't know who was taking her, and at this critical moment, any interference would only make her a target. An enraged Cersei might very well accuse her of poisoning Joffrey.

His gaze swept across the room, and he saw Shae standing frozen, tray in hand, staring at Tyrion as he was seized by guards.

*It's time,* he thought. He slowly rose from his seat.

Drogon also noticed Sansa being taken away. With Robb still alive, Sansa could never become King of the North. Drogon couldn't understand why Littlefinger Petyr would take her. The greatest troublemaker in the Seven Kingdoms was surely plotting something new.

The wedding feast dissolved into chaos. Tyrion was arrested, physicians rushed to examine Joffrey, and guests scrambled to flee, fearing implication in the king's death.

Having witnessed the spectacle, Drogon quietly slipped into the kitchen and storeroom, filled two large sacks with food, and left King's Landing for Dragonstone. The aftermath of the king's murder would be left to Varys to manage.

After leaving the wedding feast, Varys quietly found Shae. Without Tyrion's protection and Sansa's maid identity to conceal her, Shae had nowhere to hide.

Cersei had already learned of Shae's identity through reports from other maids. She couldn't arrest Shae outright due to Tyrion's presence, and she now hated him enough to tear him apart. Shae's situation was precarious. Once Cersei recovered from the shock of Joffrey's death, she would turn her attention to dealing with Shae.

Despite Varys's warnings about the danger, Shae refused to leave, insisting she would stay until Tyrion was safe. She knew that if she left now, she would never see him again.

Varys's persuasion was fruitless, and he couldn't reveal his plan to send Tyrion away. In desperation, he lured Shae into a secluded alley and knocked her unconscious when she wasn't looking.

Having struggled to survive in the chaotic slums of Lys since childhood, Varys was far from a helpless eunuch.

He called out to two subordinates he had hidden nearby and secretly carried Shae away—a desperate measure he had planned long in advance.

After seeing Shae off, Varys went to confirm the preparations of the men assigned to meet Shireen, knowing this operation could not fail.

In Blackwater Bay, Sansa followed the plump attendant as they rowed a small boat to a secluded shore. They had barely arrived when another ship emerged from the mist.

As the attendant helped Sansa onto the second ship and was about to leave, a sword suddenly shot out from the mist, piercing his chest.

Sansa turned in surprise and saw Littlefinger Petyr, his face long and narrow, his eyes narrowed, and a small mustache adorning his upper lip.

"Why did you kill Ser Dontos?" Sansa asked, her expression darkening.

The plump attendant was none other than Ser Dontos, the drunken knight Sansa had saved from Joffrey and who had been appointed court fool by the king.

"For our safety, I had no choice," Petyr replied, raising an eyebrow.

"We could have taken him with us," Sansa protested, unwilling to see the man who had saved her killed without knowing why.

Petyr smiled faintly. "Do you realize what we've done? We murdered the King of the Seven Kingdoms. If this gets out, Cersei will hunt us to the ends of Westeros."

Sansa's eyes widened in disbelief. "We killed Joffrey?"

"You're too careless," Petyr said, reaching toward Sansa's pale neck.

Sansa flinched back, only to realize Petyr was reaching for the crystal necklace around her neck.

This necklace had been a gift from Dontos just a few days prior. She hadn't wanted it at first, but Dontos insisted it was a family heirloom and the only way she could repay his life-saving act. He made her promise to wear it always, and she had reluctantly complied.

Seeing the necklace in Petyr's hand, Sansa was shocked to discover that one of the crystals on the pendant was missing.

Petyr rubbed the empty spot between his fingers. "A gentle squeeze like this," he said, "releases the poison hidden within into the golden goblet." With that, he casually tossed the necklace onto Dontos's corpse.

Watching Petyr's actions, Sansa's full chest heaved uncontrollably. She hadn't realized she had been made the true murderer of the King of the Seven Kingdoms without even knowing it.

She racked her brain, trying to recall who had touched her neck at the wedding. A kind, aged face gradually surfaced in her mind.

No wonder she had invited her to visit and asked about Joffrey.

She never imagined the Queen would take such a bold step to prevent her granddaughter from marrying that little monster Joffrey.
