Chapter 34 - Astonishment

Bran could still clearly remember Drogon's eyes, as if they could see straight through him. He had never felt anything like it before, not even from his father when he had made mistakes.

It wasn't just the gaze that intimidated him. In the presence of the little dragon, he felt like he was facing a true giant, utterly insignificant in comparison. But how could that be? The creature was so small.

"Bran, why did that little dragon want to kill you?" Jojen asked, relaxing now that Drogon had completely flown away.

"I don't know," Bran replied, still shaken. "But I'm sure he really wanted to kill me. For some reason, he suddenly changed his mind."

Bran recalled the earlier experience, still trembling with fear.

"If he had wanted to kill us, we wouldn't have stood a chance, not even the two direwolves," Wildling Osha said with certainty, watching the direction Drogon had flown.

Seeing Drogon soar into the sky, none of them felt the slightest objection.

"Is that roasted meat for us?" Rickon asked excitedly, his eyes fixed on the deer roasting over the distant fire now that the tense conversation had ended.

When Bran nodded, Rickon eagerly ran over, tore off two pieces, handed one to Bran, and stuffed the other into his mouth.

As they ate, they were surprised by how skilled a dragon's cooking could be. The meat was even more fragrant than the roasted meat they'd eaten in Winterfell.

Wildling Osha, though not particularly hungry, would never pass up a chance to try meat roasted by a dragon. She stepped forward and tore off a piece to chew.

Not long after Drogon left the North, a group of wildlings arrived beyond The Wall. Among them was an attractive brown-haired Wildling Woman, and Jon, now stripped of his Night's Watch black cloak, was clearly among them.

They were led by a golden-bearded man in thick leather clothing, his waist cinched with rope. They were preparing to climb The Wall.

In King's Landing, in the flea-infested slums, at the end of the filthy, chaotic streets, a burly man with disheveled hair limped into view.

Through the gaps in his matted hair, a horizontal scar could be seen on his forehead, just above his brow.

Wading through the sewage, he seemed weary. He leaned against a low wall, examined his limp, and casually glanced around before carefully prying a loose red brick from the wall. He slipped a rolled-up parchment into his sleeve, then replaced the brick.

Feeling sufficiently rested, he limped out of the alley.

The man disguised as a limping strongman was Varys. After retrieving the scroll, he changed his appearance again before returning home. Unrolling the parchment, he didn't find the major upheaval in King's Landing Drogon had mentioned, but what he did find still startled him.

The most unbelievable revelation was Walder's planned Red Wedding. Though the letter was from an anonymous source, Varys couldn't believe its authenticity.

*Has House Frey gone mad?* he thought. *To openly trample the sacred guest right that has maintained peace across Westeros for ten thousand years, to openly murder nobles from the North and Riverlands at a wedding feast?*

The Twins lay between the North and Riverlands. While House Frey was not weak, they were far from capable of simultaneously opposing the nobles of both regions.

Varys knew the House Frey's history well. Their rise to power had been built on toll collection, a practice many nobles looked down upon. Though wealthy, they had always struggled to enter the circles of the great houses, a goal that had eluded generations of Frey lords.

Walder had long sought an alliance with the Tully family of Riverrun, but Catelyn's father, Duke Tully, had refused, citing his intention not to arrange a marriage for Edmure. As a result, Edmure remained unmarried until the age of twenty-five.

When an opportunity finally arose to ally with Young Wolf Robb, Robb broke his betrothal and married another woman. This was a bitter pill for the prideful Walder to swallow. Coupled with the benefits promised by Tywin, it might drive them to take desperate measures.

The mysterious informant had only revealed Walder's plot, not how to act on it. Should Varys himself deliver the message to Robb? Varys pondered Drogon's intentions.

Having failed to save Eddard due to Joffrey's rash decisions, Varys was eager to seize this chance to save his wife and son.

The second matter in the message concerned Tyrion's prostitute lover, Shae.

Since Tyrion's betrothal to Sansa, Varys had wanted to send Shae to Pentos. With Cersei and Tywin in power, her exposure would likely mean her death, and her exposure would also endanger Tyrion.

Though Tyrion had been Hand of the King for only a short time, Varys recognized his talent and believed the Seven Kingdoms needed such a leader as their Hand.

For the past few days, Varys had been preparing to send Shae some gold and diamonds, allowing her to live a life of luxury in Pentos. Unexpectedly, a mysterious figure advised him against sending Shae away from King's Landing, even suggesting she might betray Tyrion.

Varys reasoned that given Shae's deep love for Tyrion, even if Tyrion's engagement to Sansa led him to neglect her, she wouldn't betray him.

Understanding the hearts of men was Littlefinger's specialty, especially when it came to women in the throes of passion. It wasn't Varys's strength.

Varys suddenly realized that while he had intended to send Shae away quietly, without telling Tyrion, she would surely assume Tyrion had instructed him to do it.

She was already resentful serving Sansa, Tyrion's betrothed, as a lady-in-waiting. If she learned Tyrion was also driving her away, might her love turn to hatred, leading her to betray him?

It was highly probable, Varys thought after much deliberation. He felt it was more taxing than training his Little Birds.

Though he now understood Shae might betray Tyrion, he couldn't grasp the severity of a prostitute's betrayal. Nevertheless, this didn't stop him from canceling his plan to send her away.

The third matter concerned Prince Oberyn of Dorne. Oberyn had never forgiven the Mountain for killing his sister Elia and crushing her child to death, and he also harbored resentment towards Tywin, who had ordered the Mountain to carry out the act.

His arrival in King's Landing made it highly likely he would seek out the Mountain. Varys wondered why the mysterious benefactor cared about Oberyn's fate—was it to win over Dorne through him?

Varys pondered the meaning of the cryptic warning in the letter: "Do not approach the Mountain too closely; carelessness will lead to death." Could it mean Oberyn should avoid confronting the Mountain?

Until he could clarify this, he decided to dispatch more Little Birds to monitor Oberyn's movements.

The letter failed to mention the major upheaval in King's Landing that Varys had been eagerly anticipating, leaving him itching with impatience. He had already mobilized the Little Birds to investigate from all angles, but had found no trace of any significant disturbance. He couldn't help but suspect the mysterious benefactor's plan might have gone awry.

He refused to believe that despite knowing of a potential major crisis, he, the Master of Whisperers, would find nothing.

At a lavish residence, a middle-aged man of only about four feet tall approached the gate. His beard was disheveled, and beneath his unruly golden hair ran a deep scar from his left forehead to his right jaw, nearly splitting his face in two.

Behind him followed a lean warrior with slicked-back hair, a longsword slung across his shoulder.
