Chapter 40 - Infiltration

He could only explain his ignorance of the small gate's heavy security by claiming he was unaware of the time. He knew the mercenaries had no reason to lie to him, but his explanation clearly wasn't convincing.

No one spoke after he finished. Finally, Daenerys decided, "Jorah, Grey Worm, and Daario, select one hundred Unsullied and the best fighters from the mercenary companies. Launch a frontal assault on the small gate. Once inside, quickly open the main gate. I'll wait outside the city for your signal."

"It's impossible for a hundred men to enter through the small gate at once. Thirty might barely fit," Daario murmured beside her.

No one responded. Knowing he had no right to speak, he looked at Daenerys, hoping she would trust him.

"Your Majesty, selecting one hundred Unsullied should be sufficient. We don't need the mercenaries, do we?" Barristan suggested. Jorah and Grey Worm glanced at Daenerys in surprise, wondering why she trusted Daario so much. Even Daario looked at her in surprise.

Jorah and the others knew that while Daenerys might not be a military strategist, she understood that if Daario was truly loyal, bringing mercenaries inside would leave her own forces vulnerable to a pincer attack.

Daenerys understood why Barristan had spoken as he had, and she knew Daario's reasoning was sound. Their original plan was to defeat the Second Sons, then send a team to sneak through the reinforced side gate, coordinating an attack from both sides.

The mercenary company included many skilled fighters, and selecting personnel from both groups would be more effective than relying solely on the Unsullied. The large number of attackers was intended to minimize losses, especially since she couldn't afford to lose Jorah or Grey Worm, who were already severely injured.

*Go, three men are more than enough!* Drogon thought, wondering why Daenerys trusted Daario so much. Sensing her hesitation, he left her shoulder and flew to Jorah and Grey Worm's side.

Seeing Drogon's movement, everyone, including Daario, felt a surge of hope. They had witnessed Drogon's prowess firsthand—not only his throat-slitting skills but also his fire-breathing ability, which made him a match for thirty skilled fighters.

Yet instead of relief, Daenerys felt a pang of anxiety. According to a report from Varys's spies, at least a hundred men guarded the side gate. Even with Drogon's strength, navigating such a chaotic battle would make it difficult for him to avoid all attacks. If anything happened to him, the consequences would be unbearable.

"Grey Worm, select four Unsullied. Daario, choose three mercenaries. Together with Jorah, you will infiltrate the postern gate tonight," Daenerys said. She couldn't bring herself to send only three people; not only was she worried about Drogon, but she couldn't afford to lose Jorah and the others.

Hearing Daenerys still planned to send so many people, Drogon hurriedly flew back to her. He extended his right claw, deftly retracted two of his fingers, and presented the claw to her.

The council members stared in astonishment at Drogon's actions. After a moment's pause, they realized what he meant: he had not only understood Daenerys' words but was also demanding that only three people infiltrate the postern gate.

Daenerys nearly laughed at Drogon's gesture. She stepped forward, took his small black claw in her hand, and said, "Three people is too few. I'm afraid you won't be safe."

Three people or ten makes little difference to me. More people just means more to keep track of.

Drogon understood the Dragon Mother's concerns, but Daario must have had his reasons for requesting only three people. The main point was that the number of people made little difference to Drogon himself, and more people would only increase the risk of exposure.

After a moment's thought, Drogon extended another finger, adding one more person to the group. Daenerys smiled and released Drogon's small, black claw. "Grey Worm," she said, "select two more Unsullied. Together with Jorah and Daario, the five of you will go with Drogon."

With the team assembled and the chosen Unsullied arriving, Daario pointed to the rough map of Yunkai he had drawn, explaining the location of the small gate and the planned breach point. After confirming the password with Daenerys, they agreed to storm the main gate the moment they saw the signal.

Everything settled, Daario led the four humans and the dragon under the cover of darkness to a small gate in the western part of the city. Four guards stood at the entrance, visible from a distance.

The five hid in the shadows. Daario signaled that his birdcall would be the signal. Once inside the small gate, he would handle the guards there, while the other four would kill the outer guards and enter immediately.

Overhearing their low conversation from his low vantage point, Drogon paid little attention to the details. Though he could have single-handedly slaughtered everyone and opened the gate, he wouldn't. Such an action would only make Daenerys's men more useless. He could only play a supporting role.

With his current defenses, it would take someone pinning him down and stabbing him repeatedly with a dagger to injure him. Moreover, his astonishing speed would prevent him from idly waiting for blades to strike.

After their discussion, Daario swaggered from the shadows toward the small gate. The guards spotted him from a distance and immediately grew wary. Their vigilance eased only when they recognized his attire and the conspicuous scimitar he carried.

Although Daario had never entered Yunkai through this gate before, the guards were familiar with the Second Sons mercenary group and knew something of their commander. Once he identified himself, they let him pass.

Drogon, who had been circling overhead, followed Daario into the city.

The darkness affected his vision, but far less than it would a human's. From the air, he could roughly estimate the number of soldiers stationed there.

Besides the dozen or so guards inside the gate, the narrow alleys leading deeper into the city were also filled with soldiers, totaling around 150.

Seeing so many soldiers, Drogon couldn't help but reflect on the importance of intelligence. Had it not been for Varys's little birds, and had Daenerys rashly sent Jorah and his companions in without proper information, they would have been lucky to survive, let alone open the gate.

After entering, Daario glanced around the courtyard before walking on and letting out a sudden bird call. The ten guards were puzzled by the unexpected sound. Before they could react, Daario drew his scimitar and swiftly took down the two guards standing by the door.

The remaining eight guards realized they'd been tricked and lunged at Daario with their spears.

Unfazed by the encircling guards, Daario retreated, scanning his surroundings. When he reached the door and heard the sounds of fighting outside, he seized his opportunity. Stepping forward, he slashed open a guard's belly. As the others recoiled in fear, he twisted aside, unlatched the door, and Jorah and the others stormed in.

The moment they entered, guards from the alley heard the commotion. brandishing longswords, shields, and spears, they surged into the narrow space.

As more guards poured in, Daario's heart pounded. If Daenerys hadn't somehow gotten wind of this, bringing the two of them in would have been certain death.

He couldn't help glancing up at the pitch-black sky. It all depended on the queen's little dragon. Even with his confidence, he wasn't arrogant enough to face dozens of enemies at once.

The five slowly formed a defensive circle, backs to backs, protecting themselves while looking for an opening.

The guards closed in, probing for weaknesses. The five's formation gradually broke apart. As the number of attackers grew, injuries began to mount, and their stamina drained rapidly.
