Chapter 26 - The Onion Knight's Shock

Shireen never imagined Drogon could not only understand Common Tongue but also write. She recalled that books never mentioned dragons being able to write, only that they were exceptionally intelligent and could comprehend human speech.

"I still don't know your name," Shireen said, quickly asking after realizing Drogon could write.

Since his secret was out, Drogon no longer hid his abilities. He flew to Shireen's small table, picked up her goose quill, dipped it in ink, and wrote "Drogon." Then he added, "Don't tell anyone."

"I promise! I won't tell a soul," Shireen nodded solemnly.

She understood she couldn't reveal Drogon's name, or even that she had met him.

Though young, she knew the implications of a dragon reborn after a century of absence. So many would covet him, and Drogon was so exceptionally clever.

Looking at the crooked letters Drogon had scrawled with his tiny claws, Shireen no longer found them unsightly.

She had just been mocking the messy handwriting on the paper, unaware that it was Drogon's work.

She knew how difficult it was to teach the Onion Knight to read; she herself had struggled for ages just to barely decipher one book. To think that Drogon, a mere dragon, could already write!

"Can Greyscale really be cured completely?" Shireen still couldn't believe it and asked Drogon again.

Many had told her she wouldn't live long as a child. It was only after her father sought out renowned physicians that her condition was stabilized, but the gray scales on her face never faded.

Because of it, she had been confined to her room since childhood, her mother allowing her to go almost nowhere.

"It can be cured, but not yet," Drogon continued writing.

Shireen didn't press further. If it could be cured, even if it took a long time, she could wait.

Seeing her silence, Drogon seemed to understand her thoughts. But while she could wait, her father couldn't.

With this in mind, Drogon picked up his quill again and wrote: "Where is the Onion Knight?"

Shireen was surprised that Drogon knew of the Onion Knight, Ser Davos.

She replied sadly, "Father calls him a traitor and has locked him in the dungeon."

"Can you see him?" Drogon switched to a fresh piece of parchment.

"The Kla Guard likes to drink. I can visit the dungeon when he's on duty," Shireen answered.

"I'll write him a letter. You deliver it, but you must promise not to read its contents," Drogon continued writing.

"I... I promise!" Shireen hesitated before replying, her mind racing with questions about what could be so important it couldn't even be read.

Shireen didn't know that her father was no longer the loving man who had once traveled far and wide to find the best doctors to cure her Greyscale. He had transformed into an ambitious duke, utterly devoted to the Red Priestess and obsessed with seizing the Iron Throne.

If Shireen were to learn that her beloved father intended to burn her alive, it would break her heart. Such a cruel fate for a girl of ten or so.

After Shireen gave her promise, Drogon spread out the parchment to write to the Onion Knight. Only then did he realize he knew the Onion Knight by name but not his true identity.

He paused to ask Shireen for the man's full name before continuing. Knowing Drogon didn't want her to see, Shireen voluntarily turned away.

"Ser Davos, soon Stannis will burn Shireen's uncle alive, and then he will burn Shireen as well. If you want to save her, find a way to send her away from Dragonstone. When the time is right, I will contact you. Someone will meet Shireen, and you won't remain in the dungeons for long."

Davos wouldn't fear punishment for privately releasing Robert's bastard son. Given his deep affection for Shireen, he would undoubtedly move heaven and earth to save her.

When he finished, Drogon rolled up the parchment and asked Shireen for a thin cord, having her help him tie it tightly.

"Are you leaving again?" Shireen asked, a hint of reluctance in her voice as she watched Drogon fly to the windowsill.

She had never had friends growing up, and now she considered Drogon her friend. He brought her delicious treats and promised to find someone to heal her face. What else could he be but a friend?

Drogon nodded, flapped his crimson wings, and launched himself into the sky.

Watching Drogon quickly shrink to a black dot, Shireen felt a pang of sadness, but it wasn't as overwhelming as the first time he had left.

Even though Drogon hadn't said when he would return, Shireen knew he would come back.

Looking at the letter in her hand, she realized that even if she read it, Drogon wouldn't know, and the contents were likely very important to her—otherwise, he wouldn't have forbidden her to read it.

Resisting the urge to peek, she waited until the Kla Guard was on duty in the dungeons and went to find Davos.

Five minutes later, she arrived at the dungeon. As expected, Kla was snoring loudly. Shireen approached the bars.

Davos, his hair and beard now streaked with gray and his burn scars still unhealed, approached her humbly to continue his literacy lessons.

Instead of a book, Shireen handed him a rolled-up parchment.

"What is this, Princess?" Davos asked, taking the parchment with a puzzled expression.

"Someone... someone asked me to give this to you. I don't know what's inside," Shireen lied.

*Who would ask a princess to deliver a letter to me?* Davos wondered, untying the cord and unrolling the parchment.

He had been learning to read with Shireen these past few days and could now slowly read books aloud. Though he couldn't recognize all the words on the page, he could grasp the general meaning.

"P... Princess, who gave you this letter?" Davos asked, his chest heaving, his voice trembling.

The contents were truly shocking: Stannis had actually burned his own daughter alive.

"Ser Davos, he asked me not to tell anyone about him. I promised. What does it say?"

*I can't read it myself, but reading it aloud to her shouldn't break my promise!* Shireen watched Davos's stunned expression, growing increasingly curious about the letter's contents.

Davos could tell from her expression that Shireen hadn't read the letter. It wasn't sealed with wax, so she could have easily opened it on the way to the dungeon. Yet she hadn't.

From this, Davos realized that Shireen had truly kept her promise not to read the letter, and that she trusted the sender deeply.

The contents of the letter were somewhat wild, but according to information obtained from the pirate captain, Stannis had declared all soldiers who opposed the Red Priestess to be "slaves of darkness," to be sacrificed to the Lord of Light when she required it, so that she might receive revelations from the flames.

After his defeat at King's Landing, Stannis had completely fallen under the Red Priestess's sway, and it was entirely possible he would burn his own daughter alive.

Having lost his son, Davos now viewed Princess Shireen, so kind and lovely, as his own daughter. How could he allow the Red Priestess to burn her to death?

"Do you believe the person who sent you this letter, Your Highness?" Shireen refused to reveal the sender's identity, so Davos had to probe indirectly.

"Of course I do. He also said he would find someone to heal my face." She trusted Drogon, the dragon, completely.

Davos knew that while Shireen appeared innocent and sweet, she was far from foolish. She could easily discern who was kind to her and who was not.
