Chapter 24 - The Mysterious Man

Having made his decision, Varys entered the room, lit the brazier, and threw the parchment he held into the flames, along with the one he had just used to deliver the message.

Drogon, hidden in the trees above, watched Varys's expression shift for a moment before slowly calming. He couldn't help but admire the man's composure, nor could he guess what was going through his mind. But this didn't hinder Drogon's next move.

He flew to an unoccupied rooftop, unfolded the parchment, and continued writing:

"King's Landing will face great upheaval. Queen Daenerys will unite Slaver's Bay, and White Walkers are emerging beyond The Wall."

"After uniting Slaver's Bay, Queen Daenerys will lack capable allies, local intelligence, and talent like Tyrion."

"If you wish to serve her, make your decision soon. You need not travel to Slaver's Bay; your value in King's Landing remains immense. Simply increase the number of your 'little birds' in Slaver's Bay and report any information the Queen desires."

"If you agree, place a clay pot on the wall—one similar to the one you used to feed your precious pet earlier."

Signed—The Mysterious Man.

It was a lot to write, and after a painstaking effort, Drogon folded the parchment, put away his writing tools, and flew to Varys's residence. He quickly placed the parchment on the stone table and swiftly returned to the large tree outside the wall.

The stone table was positioned directly opposite the door, not the window. Unless Drogon was unlucky enough for Varys to open the door at the exact moment he flew over the table, he wouldn't be able to see anything.

Drogon didn't expect Varys to open the door the moment he landed in the tree. He inwardly breathed a sigh of relief.

He didn't realize that his rapid flight had alerted Varys. Normally, such a small noise would have gone unnoticed, but after the earlier scare, Varys was more vigilant than usual.

As soon as he opened the door, Varys's eyes fell on the stone table. Another parchment! He felt as if he were seeing a ghost.

He had come out to investigate the noise but hadn't expected to find anything, even thinking he might be being overly suspicious. Yet he never imagined seeing another parchment in the exact same spot.

If he weren't absolutely certain that the previous parchment had been burned, he might have suspected he'd forgotten to retrieve it.

He hurried to the stone table. As he read the contents, his eyes widened. This...

He had miscalculated. It wasn't Littlefinger who left him the message, but someone from Daenerys's side. But how was that possible?

Moreover, they knew his secret residence and the sorcerer. They had been tracking him all along, yet he hadn't noticed a thing.

Varys felt a chill run through his body, as if he were plummeting into an ice cave. He simply couldn't believe that anyone other than Littlefinger could see through his intentions, let alone predict his future plans.

When had such a formidable figure appeared by Daenerys's side? He hadn't known anything about it. Only now, when they had come to his door, did he realize, and he had even mistaken them for Littlefinger.

He didn't suspect Littlefinger was playing some elaborate trick. The message was clear: his goal was to make Varys pledge early allegiance to Daenerys and, incidentally, take Tyrion with him. These were all things Varys had planned to do anyway. Littlefinger would never have bothered with such a pointless charade.

What was this "great upheaval" mentioned in the message? Had Daenerys already become so powerful that she could sway the situation in King's Landing?

Conquering the three regions of Slaver's Bay with 8,000 Unsullied might not be too difficult, but managing them effectively would be another matter entirely. Relying solely on Daenerys and her current subordinates would make that task nearly impossible.

Varys's network of little birds in Slaver's Bay, though less extensive than in Pentos, gave him a deep understanding of the region. He knew how difficult it would be to dismantle such an entrenched system of slavery.

The Wall, however, remained his blind spot. The White Walkers had vanished a thousand years ago. Could they truly be returning?

As he read the three messages left behind, Varys was stunned. If they were true, how could the sender have obtained such information?

Other places might be understandable, but King's Landing was his own nest. Even he, the Master of Whisperers, had been unaware of such impending upheaval. How could this mysterious person know? Or perhaps they were the cause of it all.

Varys's greatest confidence had always stemmed from his network of little birds. But before this mysterious person, he felt stripped of his greatest asset. He hadn't even noticed being followed to his secret refuge. He suspected his vaunted disguises were utterly useless against this person.

He had once believed that his unique talents would earn him a position of great trust and make him Daenerys's right-hand man.

Now, he felt utterly shattered. The only comfort was that the mysterious person still needed him. After a moment of dazed shock, Varys slowly regained his composure.

As he looked at the parchment in his hand, he finally realized how the mysterious person had silently placed it on the stone table.

Approaching the courtyard wall, Varys examined it closely. The wall stood over two meters high, requiring considerable effort for an ordinary person to climb. Most importantly, he found no traces of climbing. *Could they have flown in?*

A slightly absurd idea surfaced in Varys's mind.

*Humans definitely couldn't have flown in. It's highly unlikely a bird could precisely place the parchment on the table, and in almost the exact same position as the previous one. Could it have been a Shapeshifter?*

After hearing strange sounds from the brazier of the sacrificial *Root* as a child, Varys had delved deeply into the study of such arcane powers.

He knew that Shapeshifters could enter the minds of birds and beasts, seeing what they saw and hearing what they heard. Powerful Shapeshifters could even control animals for their own purposes.

If that were the case, the sender of the letter might still be nearby. He scanned the surroundings again, his gaze settling on several large trees in the distance—the only possible hiding places for birds.

Drogon had already concealed himself behind a tree trunk before Varys's gaze turned his way, unafraid of being discovered.

After observing the trees without finding anything, Varys remained unconvinced. He picked up a few loose stones from the courtyard and hurled them at the trees, startling several small birds that had been roosting there.

Drogon: "..."

Watching the little birds fly away, Varys could only purse his lips in resignation. Those few birds didn't seem to signify anything important.

Before opening the door, he'd only heard a faint, indistinct rustling sound, unable to determine its source. After long contemplation, he'd failed to figure it out and had to let it go.

He decided to accept the mysterious person's request. With their assistance, Daenerys might no longer need his services in the future.

He retrieved a brown earthenware jar from inside and placed it on the wall by the gate.

Dodging the stone, Drogon glanced at the jar on the wall and nodded in satisfaction. It seemed his display of strength had been effective.

He hadn't realized his demonstration would nearly crush the formidable confidence Varys had cultivated over years.

After setting down the jar and lingering in the courtyard for a while, Varys returned indoors.

Drogon flew back to the roof and resumed planning his next move. *It's so inconvenient not being able to speak!* he grumbled inwardly.

When he finished, he placed the parchment back on the desk as before. Soon, Varys emerged from the room, unsurprised to see the parchment again and making no attempt to find a messenger this time.
