Chapter 3 - WHEN DESTINY BECOMES REAL

Sophie's POV

Sophie pushes open the council room door without knocking. Maya left her jacket in here somewhere and she's not about to let her best friend freeze while waiting for some boring meeting to end.

The council members are scattered around the long table. Nobody really notices her come in. That's fine. That's normal. Sophie is used to being invisible in these kinds of spaces. She's not important enough to get attention from pack leadership. She doesn't want their attention. She just wants to find the jacket, grab it, and leave.

One of the older council members is talking about territory boundaries. Another one is shuffling papers. The whole room smells like old wood and pack politics and the kind of stuffiness that comes from people taking themselves way too seriously.

Sophie walks toward the corner where Maya usually sits when she has to attend these things. She scans the empty chairs looking for a familiar piece of fabric. There. A navy jacket hanging over the back of a chair near the wall.

She's almost there when the door opens.

Everything stops.

Not just stops. Shatters. Breaks into a thousand pieces that will never fit back together the same way again.

The mate bond hits her like someone took her heart out of her chest and tried to rip it in half.

It's not gentle. It's not the romantic thing that older wolves talk about. It's violent and all consuming and it tries to pull her toward the person walking through that door like she's a puppet on strings. Her entire body lights up like someone set her on fire from the inside out.

Sophie can't breathe.

The man is tall. Powerful. Alpha written all over him in the way he moves and the way the room changes when he enters. But Sophie doesn't care about any of that. She only cares that the mate bond is trying to pull her under. Trying to own her. Trying to change her into something she's not.

It's happening exactly like she swore it never would.

The Alpha's eyes find hers across the room and she sees the exact moment he feels it too. His face goes still. Shocked. Like the world just shifted underneath him and he doesn't understand how it happened.

Sophie understands.

She understands perfectly.

This is the thing her mother couldn't fight. This is the pull that made her mother become small and quiet and dependent on another person's love just to keep breathing. This is the trap that Sophie promised herself she would never fall into.

But it's not a promise anymore. It's right now. It's happening. It's real.

The mate bond is real and it's trying to own her and she has to make a choice right this second or she's going to spend the rest of her life becoming her mother.

Sophie's wolf wants to run to him. Wants to surrender to the bond and the pull and the promise of completion that the mate bond is whispering into her brain. Run to him. Accept him. Be his.

Her human side is screaming to run away. To fight. To reject this thing trying to control her before it gets too strong to fight anymore.

The Alpha takes a step toward her and the bond pulls harder.

Sophie feels tears in her eyes. Not from sadness. From rage. From the knowledge that she came here just to grab a jacket and now she's standing in front of her own destiny trying to decide if she's going to let it own her or not.

Everyone in the council room is staring at them. Nobody is talking. Nobody is moving. They all understand what's happening. They all understand that this is a mate bond igniting in front of them.

And they're all waiting to see what Sophie is going to do.

Sophie takes a breath. Then another one. She pulls her wolf back from the edge where it wants to jump. She pulls her human side back from the panic that wants to drown her.

And she makes a choice.

She steps forward and her voice comes out clear and strong and it fills the entire council room like thunder.

"I reject the mate bond."

The words land like a physical blow. The Alpha stops moving. The council members go completely still. Sophie can feel the shock in the room like it's a living thing.

But she's not done. She's just getting started.

"I reject you as my mate. I want no part of this."

Sophie doesn't wait for a response. She doesn't wait to see the look on the Alpha's face or hear what the council members have to say. She turns around and walks out of the council room without looking back. Her legs feel shaky but they carry her anyway.

She walks down the hallway with her head up and her shoulders back even though her entire body is screaming to collapse. Even though the mate bond is still pulling at her like a hook through her heart trying to drag her back.

Even though she can feel the Alpha's shock and confusion and anger echoing through their connection like ripples in water.

She rejected the mate bond.

In front of everyone.

She actually did it.

Sophie walks out of the pack house and into the afternoon sunlight and her whole body is shaking but not from fear. From adrenaline. From the realization that she just told destiny no.

But as she walks toward her cabin in the woods, she feels something else happening inside her. Something impossible. The rejection bond is changing. It's supposed to break her. She's supposed to be in pain right now. She's supposed to be devastated that she turned down her fated mate.

Instead she feels free.

It's like opening a cage and letting something wild out. It's like breaking chains that were never supposed to be on her in the first place. The mate bond is still there, still pulling at her, but it's different now. It's not controlling her anymore. It's just connecting her.

And somehow that makes all the difference.

Sophie reaches the edge of pack territory and shifts into her wolf form. She takes off running and she's faster than she's ever been in her entire life. Her paws barely touch the ground. Her muscles burn in the best way possible. Her senses are sharper and clearer and more alive than they've ever been.

She rejected the mate bond and it made her stronger.

She rejected destiny and she's becoming powerful.

She rejected him and she feels like she can do anything.

As the sun starts to set over the forest, Sophie runs faster and faster like she's trying to outrun the pull of the bond that's still attached to her no matter how hard she runs. Like she's trying to prove to herself that she's not going to fall apart. That she's not going to become her mother. That she made the right choice even though her heart is still connected to the man she just rejected.

High above the forest, a wolf howls.

Sophie's entire body freezes mid stride.

She knows that howl. She knows the pain and confusion and obsession behind it. She knows it belongs to the Alpha she just told no to.

And somewhere deep inside her, the rejected mate bond pulls toward him like it hasn't been broken at all.

Like maybe she just made the biggest mistake of her entire life.

Or like maybe she just made the only choice that's going to save her.
